Turning Classes

Non-Members: $320 ($35 material fee included)

Class size is limited to 5 Attendees for Turning Class.

The Center for Art in Wood is excited to announce its second turning class including beginner and intermediate turners! Come transform a piece of wood into an art form. We will explore ways to prepare wood for safely turning on the lathe as well as general safety around the shop. Things that will be covered include selection of wood, what to avoid, mounting the wood on the lathe, uses and care of the various tools and the beginning processes for your turning project. Then we will go on to ways of finalizing the turning and finish. Types of projects that will be possible include; pens & pencils, candle sticks, egg cups, weed holders, small bowls & jars, letter openers and other sculptural forms. Students should bring a high close up collar smock or shirt that can be put on backwards to keep chips from your going down your neck or in your pockets. Attendees must be 18 years or older to attend these classes and required to sign a hold harmless clause wavier

CLASS ITINERARY

– Review shop safety and Set up of equipment (eye protection, safe turning, etc.)
– Tour of Equipment and use (will be on going)

Beginner Project examples:
• Pens & Pencils project
• Offer to work with students wanting to process a pen, pocket watch, scoops, etc. (Penn State Industries kits)
• Weed Holder / Candle Stick
• Letter Opener / Sculptural Form
• Egg Cups / Jars / Small Bowls

Beyond Itinerary (for intermediate and more experienced turners)

This class will take woodturning to the next level of turning, building on the experiences of our first beginner class. Our techniques will include the use of multi axis and hollow form spindle turning. Projects will include decorative tree ornaments, jewelry forms, hollow vessels and more.
