Notes: In the 1920’s, the Surrealist artists of Western Europe incorporated feelings and expression into their artwork and used the word “poetic” to describe what they created. In 2013, the Center of Art in Wood organized an exhibit called “Personal Hang-ups” and my brain followed the Surrealists to the poetic-figurative meaning of “Hang-ups”, instead of the more literal translation. (Please forgive me.) The result was a house/head sculpture called “House or ERrOrS”. The image of a house represents the psychological home we all live in, be it in our head, or a dwelling supported by a foundation. Both residences are occupied by life’s perpetual predicaments. Represented in the artwork are three dilemmas we often face… Errors, Arrows, and Eros. To bind them all together I added a chimney that puffs the word “Opps!” as an ephemeral apology, as well as a spring-loaded swizzle mouth that likes to bounce around words.
