Notes: The 2004 Challenge V1 Roots, organized by the Wood Turning Center, was the first real exposure of my Helmet series featuring a copper visor. Searching for wood and coming across a moonscape which was once an Ancient forest is a shocking experience; the Helmets came from this experience. These pieces are not replicas of any period; they incorporate personal ideas into the Helmet form to convey a metaphor of protection. I realize that, the Helmets are for me a way of holding onto my old country and family. Anyone who is an immigrant holds onto the culture of your old country … it’s your DNA. Establishing a studio in Canada in 1980, I feel very fortunate to live on Vancouver Island. A studio close to the ocean’s beaches is a dream come true for me and my wife, a potter. We have made a living from our Crafts for nearly 40 years now.
