Notes: A recent project gave me the opportunity to explore a different approach for a different effect. I live in central New York state, an area that was once the hub of hop production in the country and is now experiencing a revival. A local brew pub asked me to produce handles for their taps. My goal was to use one piece of wood and only the lathe, to express something related to the function of a bar tap delivering a frothy brew. Just as other media and processes produce effects within their range and limitations, I wanted to suggest a glass of spirits as the lathe can express it. In a sense, drawing with the lathe. I wound up with the Bubble Helix Tap Handle. The visual effect of Bubble Helix relies on how multiple axes are organized and the capacity of the wood to cut cleanly and withstand rotational forces as supporting material is cut away. I suppose this is a descendant of the cabriole leg, both in method and achieving a desired effect.
