Turning to mindfulness

Woodturning is a perfect example of an activity that combines being centered with being in the world. The practice of craft and skilled making unites the mind and the body in pursuit of a creative, productive act. Watching the dexterous, efficient, and graceful movements of the artist working below, we start to feel relaxed and to see what the maker sees in a quiet and focused way. Gradually, we find ourselves becoming centered, just as people have since the beginning of human craftsmanship.
