PLACING: The Windgate Arts Residency Program in Wood 2023

AUGUST 4 — OCTOBER 15, 2023

The Museum’s annual summer exhibition represents the culmination of the Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program (WARP-Wood), a two-month arts residency program. In this exhibition, the international group of artists present work created during the residency, which emphasizes research, exploration, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment. Now in its twenty-sixth year, this renowned residency offers artists specializing in the material of wood the opportunity to test their vision and skill, while developing connections with colleagues, collectors, and the city of Philadelphia.

This year’s fellows, listed below, bring immersive and installation sculpture, furniture and woodworking, kinetic sculpture, and research to the Museum’s exhibition space.

Artist Fellows:

Emma Chorostecki | Toronto, Ontario

Terry Holzgreen | Los Angeles, CA

Adam John Manley | San Diego, CA

Maiko Sugano | Ibaraki, Japan / Tainan, Taiwan

Laura Zelaya | Colón, Entre Rios, Argentina

Student Artist:

Teresa Audet | Madison, WI

Scholar:

Deidre Visser |  San Francisco, CA

This year’s Scholar for the 2023 Windgate Arts Residency Program in Wood is writer, teacher, curator, and artist Deidre Visser. Her work is rooted in the belief that the arts advance civic participation and engagement in our communities, providing us with the tools to tell stories long unheard and catalyzing discourse across differences. In 2019 Deirdre co-curated Making a Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking at the [then] Center for Art in Wood, and in March 2022 Routledge Press released her book, Joinery, Joists, and Gender: A History of Woodworking for the 21st Century, the first written history of women and gender non-conforming woodworkers. During her participation on WARP Wood, she spent time with each of the fellows to learn about their practices through hands-on skill sharing and conversations in which they shared their own unique journeys.

The following are the transcripts from the exchange between Visser and the 2023 WARP Wood Fellows.
