Out of Place: The Windgate Arts Residency Program in Wood 2026

The Museum’s annual summer exhibition represents the culmination of the Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program (WARP-Wood), a two-month arts residency program. In this exhibition, the resident Fellows present work created during the residency, which emphasizes research, exploration, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment. Now in its twenty-ninth year, this renowned residency offers artists specializing in the material of wood the opportunity to test their vision and skill, while developing connections with colleagues, collectors, the Museum, and the rich cultural landscape of Philadelphia.

What does it mean to be out of place?

The phrase carries multiple meanings, describing both a social condition and a material state. Most often, it refers to the feeling of not belonging; the unease of inhabiting an unfamiliar environment, the discomfort of being an outsider, or of not quite fitting in. Yet out of place can also be understood literally. Within artistic practice, a tool may be misplaced, a familiar material may resist expectation, or a form may shift unexpectedly during making. Rather than mistakes to be corrected, these moments of displacement and material resistance become productive interruptions, creating space for experimentation and allowing accident, contingency, and imperfection to shape new possibilities.

Out of Place brings together the work of six international artists who participated in the 2026 Windgate Arts Residency Program (WARP) in Wood: Adam Atkinson (Austin, TX), Joyce Lin (Bellaire, TX), Liza Stout (Phoenix, AZ), Mark Tan (Tempe, AZ), Niv Tishbi (Tel Aviv, Israel), and Anders Nienstaedt (Minneapolis, MN). Working across sculpture, installation, jewelry, furniture, photography, and other material-led practices, these artists explore both the social and material dimensions of being out of place. Through shifts in scale, unexpected relationships between bodies and objects, and subtle disruptions of the familiar, their works reveal the uncanny within everyday life. Addressing themes of home, displacement, identity, and the body, the exhibition resists fixed categories, inviting viewers to question assumptions about belonging and to consider how context shapes what – and who – we understand to be out of place…
