Learn foundational techniques and tricks for manipulating delicate, paper-thin pieces of veneer to create dynamic images in wood.

Over the course of two days, participants will create their own marquetry piece with various hand tools, including deep-throated fret saws and hand drills/pin vises. The unique designs appropriate to the medium will be applied to substrates using Unibond One veneer glue and clamped overnight using a vacuum press. Scraping, sanding, and finish application will be covered on the second day. Discussions will be held on the history and applications of marquetry.

This class is appropriate for all skill levels. No prior woodworking experience required.

Tara Bellofatto
Philadelphia/Southern New Jersey-based woodworker, Tara Bellofatto, has been honing her skills as a furniture maker and marquetarian since graduating from the University of the Arts in 2010. Tara has exhibited at the Cosmopolitan Club, Philadelphia’s City Hall, Attleboro Arts Museum, and has participated in alumni exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Philadelphia Furniture Show.

Growing up with an appreciation for what has come before, Tara pays homage to the pop culture of the past, being heavily influenced by striking images found within movements and periods such as Art Deco, pre-code Hollywood, and Germany’s Weimar era. She blends her passion for woodworking and her enthusiasm for vintage film, music, literary, and (especially) horror icons. Entirely cut by hand, her marquetry presents rewarding challenges, allowing her to connect to and become completely immersed in her creations.

Tara Bellofatto maintains her practice out of her home studio in New Jersey and currently works at the University of the Arts as a Lecturer and Wood Shop Technician.

The Center for Art in Wood is a non-profit arts organization located in Philadelphia that nurtures and promotes the innovation of art in wood through collaborative residencies, exhibitions, education, and documentation.  The Center also maintains an inspirational collection and a research library to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the art.

All materials are included in the cost of the workshop.
