Notes: In 1991, “Vanity Chair” was selected for the Wood Turning Center’s 1991 International Lathe-Turned Objects (ITOS) Challenge IV show that opened at the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia. The chair nicely represents two significant influences on my career: Mark Sfirri, my former professor at Bucks County Community College, and Rosanne Somerson, then head of the Furniture Design program at Rhode Island School of Design. Mark’s influence can be seen in the use of the lathe as a powerful shaping tool; Rosanne’s in the overall consistency of surface treatment, form, and concept. Although I had previously shown my work in several galleries, this was my first “museum” show along with work from internationally-known wood artists. My inclusion helped to solidify my resolve to continue on the path of furniture design and making.
