Artist Statement:

The wood box, by Lucinda Rawe, was built to house the lithophone panels, by Stephanie Osser. By framing the Lithophones in a maple wood box, the translucent porcelain panels display snippets of a turtle landscape from the children’s book illustrated by Stephanie Osser. The maple wood was chosen for its smooth grain and light color, as well as its strength, to compliment the delicacy of the porcelain. Each panel is framed as individual works that culminate into a storyboard effect around the cube. When back lit by an LED light source inside the box, the panels produce a “Wow” effect, as they appear 3D bas-reliefs. Osser learned to make lithophones carving them as low bas-relief images on plaster, cast them in liquid translucent porcelain and then had the problem of finding a way to show them with back lighting. This is our first collaboration as artists working in wood and porcelain, showcasing the materials we each know best.
