Notes: The current work is a tray design that I began experimenting with while teaching at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts during the summer of 2015. It is made of one piece of poplar that is hand carved. The finish, in this case, works as a result of layered paint as well but with strikingly different results. The textured surface gave more opportunity for highlights. In the Cabinet, the outside corners were highlighted by sanding through to the walnut. In the tray, it’s the inside corners which are highlighted by this technique. I wanted to emphasize the intersection of the curving planes of the horizontal and vertical elements.
