Notes: In 1975, when I started learning to turn wood, I was quite enamored with Bob Stocksdale’s teak salad bowl displayed in the Craft Multiples exhibit (on page 60 of the catalog) at the Smithsonian Renwick Gallery in Washington DC. In 1991, my version of Bob’s salad bowl was a thin, burly and spalted silver maple 10 inch bowl which was juried into the 1991 Challenge IV exhibition at the Port of History Museum in Philadelphia (on page 8 of the catalog). I was proud of this piece, and it’s inclusion in this exhibition gave me a strong sense of achievement and acceptance in the wood turning field. I turned versions of that bowl in burled and spalted maple, and in clear cherry. I put a wide rim on the bowl at collector Jane Mason’s suggestion. I have also experimented with light-weight species, at a client’s request.
