Notes: Redwood belongs to conifers. It is characterized by particularly soft early wood and the much harder late wood that comprise an annual growth ring. Sandblasting results in a relief-like surface resembling landscapes especially when used on burl and root wood. For this work I used redwood burl only in the middle part of the tripartite sphere. This arrangement optically centers the topic of variable hardness. I generally like to emphasize the particular properties of different kinds of wood by using contrasts as a creative instrument. In this instance I smoothly applied shining car finish to accentuate and contrast the rough and relief-like structure of the wood. In 2013, “Schwarz, Black, Noir” was shown in the bi-annual exhibition in France, entitled AFTAB “Du Coeur à l’Écorce.”
