Press Release, my response to the collection of mangle boards, is a mangle board that has been transformed into a book. It is the same size and proportion, but has been cut, hinged, and bound with a series of scar-like caterpillar stitches, a bookbinding technique. There is a handle, rather phallic, not unlike the handle of a mangle board, on one panel, and an opening on the other, where the board/book may be hung on the wall. The pages of the book are made of fabric, white cotton and linen that were originally shirts and nightgowns, that have been cut, mended, folded and stitched to transform their original forms from functional garments into remnants and reminders. I would like this piece to acknowledge the beauty of the transaction between the young couple, but recognize that it has passed into history, as represented by the book form. The fabric bears the marks of time and references cultural transformations and has also been modified. The fabric pieces are pressed between the two boards, which together, protect, enclose, and preserve them.
