Artist Statement:

I am interested in the decorative and how meaning is created and shared through decorative acts. Jewelry draws attention to the body it adorns; it is decoration at its most personal and vulnerable. The stories of Classical Greece seem to always put one’s body in danger; a human form could be changed to an animal or plant, perverse punishments were meted out and the like. The Mythology series draws inspiration from these stories and seeks to translate the circumstances of their protagonists into distilled forms that capture the essence of that character. I use wood for it’s organic quality, enhanced with precious stones, metals and other materials, to transform the mundane. I came to jewelry by a circuitous path. I began my education in metalsmithing, only to discover a passion for woodworking that overwhelmed all else. As my career continues, I find respite from large scale furniture and sculpture in these smaller forms and the freedom they offer.
