Artist Statement:

Graeme and Melissa were born on different sides of the globe and have very different cultural heritages. They wanted to create something that is about the places and people that they come from and show how those two worlds fuse when they collaborate. The left mangle board is Graeme’s, representing a frangipani pattern, widely used in by indigenous Pacific Islanders in tapa cloth. Melissa’s mangle board on the right is loosely derived from Eastern European decorative motifs, honoring her father who emigrated from Switzerland and her Roma grandmother. In the middle the patterns overlap, showing how cultures and places intertwine when two lives come together as one.
