Notes: The Wood Turning Center was the first public art collection to provide a permanent home for my work, and their enthusiasm provided a beacon for my efforts as an emerging artist. Ever since, I have been grateful for the Center’s unique mission of advancing the appreciation of wood art and for providing a platform for my work amongst an international community of brilliant artists - who all share in this common goal. I began turning wood because I was fascinated by nature's patterns, especially the bounty of beautiful colors and grain inside wood. Today I'm fascinated by the gamut of beautiful patterns from ornamental turning techniques! Displayed in the 2005 exhibit, Artists’ Reflections: Selections from the Wood Turning Center’s Museum Collection, my Mandala Cup design resulted from my fascination with pattern and light. The elegant simplicity of the cup form served as a container for intricate yet organic geometric patterns. It was fashioned from African blackwood, using an antique hand- powered rose engine lathe.
