Notes: In the turning world of the 1980s, when I first became part of it, there was an inspiring culture of innovation. Turners avidly followed all the new developments. The Center for Art in Wood’s Challenge series of exhibitions validated and documented the best new art forms, and attracted the attention of forward-looking collectors. Together, these influences created a lot of positive energy that continued to inspire new efforts. By 1989 I had begun using the imagery of Southwestern landscape features in my own turned work. My Crosswinds series made a connection between technique and imagery. The wood layers became a metaphor for layers of rock, altered by geological forces. It was tremendously encouraging to me when Crosswinds #1 became part of the 1989 Turners' Challenge III exhibition, held that year at the Craft Alliance in St. Louis, Missouri.
