Artist Statement:

Both of these pieces are band saw boxes, quickly constructed so that I can focus more on surface, color, and idea. The first one is specifically a ring box, hidden inside a hinged monolithic ziggurat-like structure. Although this project focuses on small objects, they can still have weight and importance. When the top hinges open, a slot fora ring is revealed. Inside the lid is a hollow space with “sparkles” painted on the “ceiling. This same motif appears in another space underneath the box. The second box is a set of nesting boxes, with a chicken and egg theme. Inside the chicken’s head are her “thoughts,” a pattern that appeared to be how I imagined a chicken’s thoughts would look. Inside that is an “egg,” which has egg forms painted on it, and another patterned interior. Inside of that is the interior of the egg, which has a hollowed out yolk for storing something small and round. Both of these boxes are somewhat silly, but hopefully also express ideas about containment and presentation.
