Notes: “Box of Bowls”, was created during my Fellowship at the Center's International Turning Exchange in 2009. Albert gave me some roughed-out bowl blanks from the shop of the late Palmer Sharpless, and I spun a few of these blanks. I really wasn’t intending that these pieces would be part of the exhibit and with a little tongue-in-cheek humor, I decided to present the whole collection of these bowls in a box filled with saw dust, waste wood and old and broken tools. The “Death” card that I put with the bowls is something I found underneath a piece of cardboard that was in the tool cart that I used during the two month residency. Apparently it was there the whole time. I learned that the “Death" card, was not about death, but about a new beginning. Most of my work up to this time was sculptural in nature and I wasn’t really turning bowls anymore. So when all of these elements were examined together, they actually had a meaning - as if I was saying good bye to bowls, and continuing my journey into more sculptural work.
