Notes: I have much gratitude for the support of the Center for Art in Wood and for having the opportunity to work alongside and collaborate with my fellow ITE residents of 2014. Bliss was an important piece for me during that residency. It began as a calculated design which involved flipping a chunk of Ash back and forth on the lathe to create an undulating form, and evolved into something that wasn’t thought, but felt. Once I was finished with the templates used to create the form, I began carving, shaping, and finishing with the intuition that preceded my intellectualization: I observed how people approached the piece, how they handled it, and what they thought - and then how I felt, how I handled it, and how I approached it. It was clear when Bliss was finished because I was deeply satisfied and completely content with letting it go. The pieces I create that are primarily constructed for deconstruction are all “workmanship of risk” which necessitates staying present in the moment, maintaining focus and flexibility, and is an ongoing lesson in non-attachment.
