Notes: AZ was created almost 16 years after Wrapt, and much has changed. I now spend winter months enjoying the sunshine and warmth of the desert southwest. Spring migration, however, still brings me back to Vermont, the slopes of the Green Mountains, and wood turning. In recent years, my vessels reflect influences from the forms of the Art Nouveau movement and from traditional southwestern pottery. Note in particular the elongated, pinched neck that is completely fabricated from resins, and the near spherical form. As a result of many years developing my inlay technique, the layers are now more numerous, seemingly more sophisticated or complicated, and more expansive. AZ is reminiscent of Arizona’s history of mining and gemstones, represented by a copper canyon set in a turquoise ground. The inlay is always meant to compliment the natural beauty of the burled wood grain. During the 30 years of my wood turning career Albert and the Center’s staff have been leading advocates for contemporary wood art and artists. The Center for Art in Wood is the preeminent institution in the nation supporting wood-based art.
