Artist Statement:

Cristina Tamarez | Photojournalist
Ridgewood, NY, USA

I like to take intimate portraits of people; this is apparent in my previous body of work. With my photos I want, to the best of my ability, to represent individuals. When I photograph I like to think about the image and what I am capturing, but mostly the relationships that I am creating within the photograph.

My time on the Windgate ITE has been fascinating, especially the experience of being immersed in a new craft—woodworking—and having the opportunity to visually document it. Prior to my time on the residency program, I had no knowledge of any type of woodworking, yet here I was, learning from a fellow ITE resident how to make frames for my photos.

My objective with the photos is to share my perspective of how the ITE residents worked and grew as individuals and as a collective. My point of view is as someone who had no idea what was happening most of time but still very intrigued and curious.
