The Museum for Art in Wood’s permanent collection currently numbers some 1,300 artworks. In total, it offers an expansive view into the creative pursuits of artists, craftspeople, and designers working in the material of wood.

The Museum aims to make its treasury available to the public as much as possible onsite as well as on its online database and Smartify platform. However, the breadth of its holdings exceeds its physical location, and many pieces spend some of their time in storage, out of public view.

Showcasing forty-eight works of turning, sculpture and furniture by forty-two artists, From the Vault: Rarely Seen Works from the Museum’s Permanent Collection offers a deeper glimpse into the diversity of its collection. From wood-turned vessels to large-scale sculpture, studio furniture, and works on paper, the works in the Museum’s collection encompass a wide range of scales, approaches, and mediums. While considerations such as object size or medium do not influence accessioning, they do influence what can be shown onsite at any time.

Featuring objects that have been in the Museum’s holdings for thirty years alongside recent gifts from knowledgeable collectors in the field such as Fleur Bresler, Ann Fisher, Jerry and Gwen Paulson, and Joe Seltzer, From the Vault showcases the evolving and complex explorations by artists in wood, embodied in the Museum for Art in Wood’s permanent collection.
