SUMMARY:Live Marquetry Demo
DESCRIPTION:LIVE Marquetry Demo | Tara Bellofatto | Fri. Dec. 6\, 2019 |  The Center for Art in Wood\n  \nJoin us for First Friday for a live marquetry demo with Tara Bellofatto. Meet the artist and watch her manipulate delicate\, paper-thin pieces of veneer to create dynamic images in wood. During the evening\, you will also have the opportunity to sign up for the two-day Marquetry Madness Class hosted by the Center for Art in Wood and taking place at the University of the Arts on Sat\, Jan 11\, and Sun\, Jan 12\, 2020. \nThis class is appropriate for all skill levels. No prior woodworking experience required. \nFor more information and for registration click HERE. \nTara Bellofatto\nPhiladelphia/Southern New Jersey-based woodworker\, Tara Bellofatto\, has been honing her skills as a furniture maker and marquetarian since graduating from the University of the Arts in 2010. Tara has exhibited at the Cosmopolitan Club\, Philadelphia’s City Hall\, Attleboro Arts Museum. She has participated in alumni exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Philadelphia Furniture Show. \nGrowing up with an appreciation for what has come before\, Tara pays homage to the pop culture of the past\, being heavily influenced by striking images found within movements and periods such as Art Deco\, pre-code Hollywood\, and Germany’s Weimar era. She blends her passion for woodworking and her enthusiasm for vintage film\, music\, literary\, and (especially) horror icons. Entirely cut by hand\, her marquetry presents rewarding challenges\, allowing her to connect to and become completely immersed in her creations. \nTara Bellofatto maintains her practice out of her home studio in New Jersey and currently works at the University of the Arts as a Lecturer and Wood Shop Technician.

SUMMARY:Object Lesson: James Maurelle
DESCRIPTION:Object Lesson |  James Maurelle\, artist and lecturer at Penn | Fri. Nov. 1\, 2019 | 7 – 7:30 pm | The Center for Art in Wood Museum Collection\nFREE\nObject Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that will open wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nJames Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, and sound art are his analog and digital primes\, His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity\, at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions\, the accompaniment: i\,e\, tools\, and materials\, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know ones’ instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. Jazz is the primer which propels the work\, the tone/feel of every composition is in direct association with the culture. Every object I compose is a physical versioning of a historic recording of happening\, every tool used is an augmented scale referencing an industrial progression. The materials (wood\, metal\, plastic\, film) are the staff paper\, and every committed strike upon these materials forms a note or chord. The fluidity connecting mind\, hand\, and tools are based on the augmented triad which is the cornerstone of my work ethic. The main objective is to continue creating full-bodied compositions\, as long as the staff paper flows\, I will inscribe upon it. \nHis work has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York\, Minneapolis-Saint Paul\, Austin\, Philadelphia\, Cincinnati\, and San Francisco. He is a recipient of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Fellowship (2015). \n  \nObject Lesson Schedule: \nDecember 6\, 2019 – Aisha Zia Khan\, Executive Director of Twelve Gates Arts \n

She has worked in a range of woodshops including Michael Hurwitz\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art Conservation Department and a five-year stint as a Project Manager at Staack Moore Woodworking. \nHer strong interest in land art and material research led her to make work as an artist-in-residence at several programs including the Frank Lloyd Wright School of Architecture/Taliesin West\, Art Farm\, and CAC Troy. Her projects have been featured in SP Weather Station\, Conflux Festival 2012\, and Fairmount Park Conservancy’s recent “Meadow Mansions” among others. \nAfter earning her BFA at the University of Delaware she has continued her education through self-directed projects and workshops including Corzo Center\, Anderson Ranch Arts Center\, Center for Art in Wood\, and a shoemaking intensive at Velo by Zin in Barcelona\, Spain. \nIn 2016 she organized and facilitated #Craftswomen\, a panel discussion at the National Furniture Society Conference\, which led to a workshop tour project for young women that she recently developed with the support of a grant from the Leeway Foundation. SUMMARY:Closing and Gallery Talk for Damien Davis: Color Cargo
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk with Damien Davis | at The Center for Art in Wood | Sat\, July 20\, 2019 | 2 – 4 pm\nJoin us for the closing and gallery talk for Damien Davis: Color Cargo with the artist on Saturday\, July 21st. Hear Davis speak about his exploration of historical representations of blackness by composing stories\, told through a lexicon of graphic figures and shapes\, that oscillate between his personal memories and chapters of human history. A reception will follow the talk with the option to participate in a hands-on experience of building your own stories. \nDavis’ signature pre-cut shapes in wood and acrylic will provide inspiration and reflection as participants learn how to harness color and imagery in service of personal or subversive storytelling. \nThis workshop is open to ages 5 and up and welcomes all skill levels. \n\nPictured are pieces created during Woodcuts and Bolts: Storytelling with Damien Davis that took place on June 8\, 2019. You can make one of your own after the gallery talk.\nCost: $15 Members click HERE | $20 Non-Members click HERE\nSave on this and future workshops by becoming a member.\nAll materials are included in the cost of the workshop.\n \nDamien Davis (b. 1984) is a Brooklyn-based artist. His practice explores historical representations of blackness by unpacking the visual language of various cultures and questioning how these societies code/decode representations of race through craft\, design\, and digital modes of production. Davis’ work has been presented at museums and galleries across the US and in Italy\, and he is the recipient of numerous grants and residencies. He holds a BFA in Studio Art and an MA in Visual Arts Administration from New York University. \nThe Center for Art in Wood is a non-profit arts organization located in Philadelphia that interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. \nFor questions contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org or 215-923-8000 ext 103.
