Please note that this screening offers closed captioning. \nVon Rydingsvard in her Williamsburg studio on South 5th Street\, surrounded by the cedar cast of katul katul\, 2002. \nUrsula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own is an artistic biography of one of the few women in the world working in monumental sculpture. Von Rydingvard’s work has been featured in the Venice Biennale and is held in the collections of some of the world’s great museums\, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. But she may be best-known for work in Public spaces – imposing pieces painstakingly crafted with complex surfaces. \nVon Rydingsvard and assistants preparing to work on Ene Due Rabe\, San Francisco\, 1990. \nVon Rydingsvard working on the patina of Uroda\, a monumental copper sculpture commissioned by Princeton University\, 2015. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIn this documentary\, we go behind the scenes with von Rydingsvard\, as she and her collaborators – cutters\, metalsmiths\, and others – produce new work\, including challenging commissions in copper and bronze. But the film also delves into the artist’s personal life\, and how it has shaped her work. Born in Poland during the Second World War\, she was partly raised in a displaced persons camp and came to the US as a refugee with her nine-person family. Her younger brother shares memories of being raised by their violent\, domineering father – a man whose influence von Rydingsvard continues to feel. Brought up in a blue-collar environment\, she became a teacher and then\, as a single mother\, moved to New York in the 1970s to take up her artistic practice full-time. \nIn conversations with curators\, patrons\, family\, and fellow artists\, we come to know von Rydingsvard as a driven but compassionate sculptor with a deep commitment to her art and the world around her. \nPlease also join us for the Into Her Own Panel Discussion on Thursday\, June 18\, 2020 at 6:30 with artists Ursula von Rydingsvard and Vivian Chiu and Daniel Traub\, the director of the film Ursula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own moderated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Artistic Director of the Center for Art in Wood. DESCRIPTION:Searching for Home in Philadelphia | Tues\, June 16\, 2020 | Live on ZOOM at 6:30 pm EDT\nRSVP \nJoin us for a panel discussion with Searching for Home artist Humaira Abid\, Dana Gold of Nationalities Service Center\, Anne Ishii of Asian Arts Initiative\, and Hazami Sayed of Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture. We’ll discuss the contributions made by immigrants to the Philadelphia’s rich culture\, and connect to the situation faced by immigrants and refugees during COVID-19 and how the pandemic made it easy to overlook the vulnerable and unprotected.\n\nPhoto of Humaira Abid by Amber Hammad \nHumaira Abid’s carved wood sculpture and paintings—known for their exquisite detail—depict human relationships\, societal repression\, and the consequences of keeping basic truths from being discussed and shared. The beauty and seductive virtuosity of her work offset her political\, ironic\, provocative\, and even scandalous objects and installations. \nHumaira Abid was born and raised in Lahore\, Pakistan. She immigrated to the United States in 2008 and now lives and works in Seattle\, WA. \nAbid received her BFA in sculpture and miniature painting from the National College of Arts\, Lahore\, in 2000. Her works have been exhibited in museums and galleries and documented in publications around the world and reviewed by local\, national\, and international news media. Abid is the recipient of numerous honors\, most recently the 2019 Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award. \nHer work has been published in books and other print media\, and she has been the recipient of prestigious awards and grants. She has lectured widely and participated in residencies and symposia around the world. Two documentary features focused on Abid and her work\, produced by the KCTS9 branch of PBS and Seattle Channel\, were both nominated for Northwest Emmy Awards. The artist is represented by Greg Kucera Gallery\, Seattle. \nDana Gold \nDana Gold is a Job Developer at Nationalities Service Center\, where she connects clients to jobs in the Philadelphia area to promote their economic autonomy and general self sufficiency. Specifically\, Dana helps refugee and immigrant clients research open positions\, submit applications\, prepare for interviews\, and learn professional standards in the US\, among other job readiness initiatives. Her job is focused on building partnerships with local employers in order to connect clients to great jobs in the Philadelphia region.\n\nDana is passionate about making complicated systems more accessible and transparent for all\, and this is shown through her breadth of experience teaching English both at NSC and abroad. She has also worked at college access programs in her native Oakland\, CA and in Philadelphia to help high school students navigate the college application process. She holds Bachelor’s degrees in Political Science and Spanish from Bryn Mawr College.\n  \nAnne Ishii \nAnne Ishii is the Executive Director of Asian Arts Initiative in Philadelphia. Her writings have appeared in multiple publications including Slate\, the Village Voice\, and Publishers Weekly. Her translation and editorial projects include the Eisner-award winning manga My Brother’s Husband by Gengoroh Tagame\, Batmanga!: the Secret History of Batman in Japan\, and Massive: Gay Japanese Manga and the Men Who Make It. She is co-founder of the publishing\, fashion\, and creative agency Massive Goods\, which represents queer and feminist artists from Japan. \n  \n  \n  \n  \nHazami Sayed \nHazami Sayed\, an Arab-American\, grew up in the Arab region and came to the U.S. to pursue higher education. She founded Al-Bustan Seeds of Culture with the launch of an Arabic language and cultural camp in 2002. Her interest stemmed from a desire to develop a creative and supportive environment where her young boys could learn the Arabic language and be immersed in the richness of Arab arts and culture while navigating their place in American society. Sayed has worked in the fields of architecture and urban development in Philadelphia and New York City. Her areas of interest and research were community development and affordable urban housing in which she worked at the UNDP\, several architecture firms\, and taught a seminar at the University of Pennsylvania. She is also a photographer and has exhibited her work in Philadelphia. She received her Bachelor of Arts in Economics from Stanford University and Master of Architecture from Columbia University. Sayed is a recipient of the Leeway Foundation’s Transformation Award given to Philadelphia-area women artists committed to art-making for social change. DESCRIPTION:A View from Left Field with Mark Sfirri | Thurs\, June 11\, 2020 | Live on ZOOM at 6:30 pm EDT\nRSVP \nSummer just isn’t summer without baseball! Even though we can’t go to a game the Center is bringing an evening in the stands to you with artist Mark Sfirri. Sfirri will share his love of the game and how it’s influenced his work. Following the talk stay for a baseball-themed happy hour where we’ll share some of our favorite highlights. Get your game gear and your hot dogs and peanuts ready for this don’t miss virtual event! \nMark Sfirri received his BFA and MFA in furniture design at Rhode Island School of Design. He works mostly in wood and incorporates lathe-turned forms\, often turned on multiple axes\, in his work. He has lectured and demonstrated his techniques throughout North America and Europe\, as well as in Australia\, New Zealand. His work is included in the permanent collections of twenty-eight public institutions. \nSfirri is professor emeritus at Bucks County Community College in Pennsylvania where he ran the Fine Woodworking Program from 1981 to 2017. He has received two national awards: the “Distinguished Educator Award” in 2010 from the Renwick Alliance of the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian Institutions and\, in 2012\, the “Lifetime Achievement Award” from the Collectors of Wood Art. \nInch Worm Bat \nIn 1993 his son Sam\, who was six at the time\, ran into Sfirri’s shop and asked him to make him a Little League bat that had a hollow in the end of it. Sfirri was very busy with a furniture commission and tried to get out of it. Sam’s request turned into demand when he said “Dad….. you have the wood and you have a lathe……make me a bat!”   When he put it that way\, priorities seemed so clear and Mark\, of course\, obliged. It didn’t take that long and Sam went away happy. Mark thought that it might be interesting to isolate multi-axis turning details that he was experimenting with at that time and incorporate them on this common object which would serve as a blank canvas. He named this series “Rejects From the Bat Factory”.   Its intention was to capture some obvious humor\, but it was also a statement about our culture and how we sometimes prize the mistakes more than the “good ones”. Other times the opposite is true. Over the years\, he’s revisited this series with changes in species used and some of the designs. DESCRIPTION:Photo: Ran Erde\nArtist Talk with Dania Chelminsky | Thurs\, May 28\, 2020 | Live on ZOOM at 12:30 pm EDT\nRSVP \nJoin us for a lunch break with contemporary jewelry artist Dania Chelminsky. Dania will talk about her childhood immigration to Israel from Mexico City and how this experience turned her focus to the body and the material of wood as she pursued a career in metalsmithing. \nPhoto by the artist. \nDania Chelminsky was born in Mexico City in 1961 and has lived in Israel since 1970. She studied sciences\, metalworking\, design for the performing arts; in 2018\, she received her MA in Integrated Design at the Holon Institute of Technology. From 1988 to 2000\, she designed jewelry at her own studio and shop in Tel Aviv. After that\, she moved to a studio and started to investigate conceptual directions in the creation of jewelry. \nIn her work\, she combines contrasting materials\, mixing organic with synthetic\, hard with soft\, and crafted with found objects. Intrigued by the points at which these materials intersect\, Chelminsky uses traditional metalsmithing techniques to emphasize moments of tension. Her juxtaposition of such disparate elements allows her to tell a story with each of her pieces\, inspiring a moment of thought about the way we relate to the world that surrounds us. \nHer works have been profiled in international publications such as Metalsmith\, Portfolio\, Domus\, and Lark Books. She has exhibited her work extensively throughout the world\, with multiple solo exhibitions presented at Periscope Gallery\, Tel Aviv\, as well as at Museo Lazaro Galdiano\, Madrid. Milliken\, who curated the Center’s Pennsylvania Made exhibition\, will talk about wooden vessels\, furniture\, saffron boxes\, and sculpture while touching upon processes of ornamental wood turning\, the commitment to the value of collaboration in Pennsylvania craft and design\, and other discussions unique to creative engagement with wood in the region. \nJennifer-Navva Milliken is the Artistic Director for The Center for Art in Wood. Prior to her arrival at the Center\, she served as an embedded staff member in international art museums\, as an independent curator\, and as the founder of a cross-disciplinary art space. Her exhibitions have been presented in museums\, art fairs\, galleries\, and unconventional spaces\, and her writings have been seen in exhibition catalogues\, anthologies\, and publications that investigate and critique the intersecting fields of art\, craft\, and design. Artist Humaira Abid’s life and passion is devoted to leveraging her artistic language to expose taboos and their harmful effects on society. In the exhibition Searching for Home\, on view at the Center for Art in Wood’s website\, Abid transports visitors into a concurrent reality\, in which tens of millions of people worldwide have fled their homes—a troubling narrative that the artist depicts through installations of carvings and paintings. If you have questions please contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org \n\n  \n\nPhoto of Humaira Abid by Amber Hammad \nHumaira Abid’s carved wood sculpture and paintings—known for their exquisite detail—depict human relationships\, societal repression\, and the consequences of keeping basic truths from being discussed and shared. The beauty and seductive virtuosity of her work offset her political\, ironic\, provocative\, and even scandalous objects and installations. \nHumaira Abid was born and raised in Lahore\, Pakistan. She immigrated to the United States in 2008 and now lives and works in Seattle\, WA. \nAbid received her BFA in sculpture and miniature painting from the National College of Arts\, Lahore\, in 2000. Her works have been exhibited in museums and galleries and documented in publications around the world and reviewed by local\, national\, and international news media. Abid is the recipient of numerous honors\, most recently the 2019 Artist Trust Arts Innovator Award. \nHer work has been published in books and other print media\, and she has been the recipient of prestigious awards and grants. She has lectured widely and participated in residencies and symposia around the world. Two documentary features focused on Abid and her work\, produced by the KCTS9 branch of PBS and Seattle Channel\, were both nominated for Northwest Emmy Awards. The artist is represented by Greg Kucera Gallery\, Seattle. \n

Making Home Movies partners adult and youth English language learners with filmmakers and poets to explore the language and imagery of home and to create community together. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm and viewing begins at 7:00 pm. Wine and light fare will be available. \nThis project has been funded by the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIdS). She began competing in the Philly Youth Poetry Movement’s slam league when she was in ninth grade. Since then\, she has performed at many open mics and slams in Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Washington\, d.c. and New York. She earned a spot on Philadelphia’s Brave New Voices team in 2017. In 2018 Kadidja was awarded Artwell’s Student Leader award. Currently\, she is a sophomore in college studying education at the secondary level. Kadidja wholeheartedly believes in poetry’s ability to confront social issues\, spread awareness\, and tell stories of marginalized people. \n  \n  \nReese Florence Coran \nPhiladelphia based singer-songwriter Reese Florence is a hand percussionist\, ukulele\, and guitar player. A purely haunting\, bluesy\, and soulful sound; effortlessly expressing inner wisdom through the preparation of her freshman album\, to be released in Autumn 2020.

Each semester a young artist is asked to share their work and speak about the transition from academia to an independent artist. The third installment in the series will feature artist Wit López taking place on Wednesday\, March 4\, 2020\, from 6 – 8 pm. López will discuss their experiences developing their career\, multidisciplinary practice\, and the road that led them to work with the material of wood once again. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood is a nonprofit arts organization. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nFor question please contact Community Engagement Manager Katie Sorenson at katie@museumforartinwood.org. \n\nWit López is a multidisciplinary maker\, performer\, cultural advocate\, and public speaker based in Philadelphia\, PA. As a performer\, Wit uses movement\, music\, costuming\, props\, and storytelling to address issues that deeply impact their communities by harnessing themes like gender identity/gender fluidity\, body image\, disability\, illness\, hairiness\, sexuality\, Blackness\, Latinidad\, and class. They are a classically trained mezzo-soprano\, flautist\, and actor\, with extensive training in West African dance\, Afro-Puerto Rican dance\, ballet\, and modern. With their practice in craft\, Wit designs installation experiences through furniture (new and upcycled)\, textiles\, and home goods that prioritize the importance of comfort\, accessibility\, audience interaction\, and warm memories for the artist and viewer. \n  \nIn 2019\, Wit was awarded an Independence Foundation Fellowship in the Arts for Visual Art for their practice in fiber art and woodworking. They are also one of 10 recipients of the Leeway Foundation Transformation Award for 2019. To support their curatorial work of organizing the QT Noir Arts Festival\, Wit has received 2018 and 2019 Leeway Foundation Art and Change grants. As part of a cohort of 16\, Wit was also part of the 7th cycle of Innovative Cultural Advocacy Fellows at CCCADI in Harlem\, NY\, in 2019.

There are many fun and easy ways to do it. In this class\, you will learn how to safely use simple hand tools to create texture\, various coloration options and finishing techniques on wood. In this class\, you will safely learn the basics of how to make various patterns. \n  \nJoin us for this fun series at the Center and enjoy one or both evenings! \nKeunho Peter Park is an international artist\, woodworker\, and instrument maker who teaches at the University of the Arts in Philadelphia. He holds a B.F.A in painting from South Korea’s Kookmin University and an M.F.A. in Woodworking and Furniture Design from the Rochester Institute of Technology. Park is also the recipient of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show’s Wharton Esherick award and the Windgate resident artist at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. \nThe Center for Art in Wood is a non-profit arts organization located in Philadelphia that nurtures and promotes the innovation of art in wood through collaborative residencies\, exhibitions\, education\, and documentation.  The Center also maintains an inspirational collection and a research library to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the art. \nAll materials are included in the cost of the workshop. \nCancelation Policy\nCancelations of a workshop must be made by email. The Center will offer a full refund if notice is given at least 5 business days before the workshop. DESCRIPTION:A Conversation with Humaira Abid\, Jennifer-Navva Milliken Artistic Director\, (The Center for Art in Wood)\, and Jodi Throckmorton\, Curator of Contemporary Art (PAFA) | Sat\, February 8 | 3:30 – 4:30 PM  | $15\, free for members of the Center and PAFA at the Rhoden Arts Center\, Samuel M.V. Hamilton Building\, Philadelphia Academy of Fine Arts \nArtist Humaira Abid’s life and passion has been to use her artistic language to expose taboos and their harmful effects on society. In her current exhibition at the Center for Art in Wood\, Abid transports visitors into a concurrent reality\, one in which tens of millions of people worldwide have had to flee their homes\, a troubling narrative she conveys through a collection of carvings and paintings. Riley\, Eve-Lena Shermaine Pinder\, Rosanne Somerson\, and Deirdre Visser followed by a makers mixer. Celebrate the closing and listen to a conversation sharing personal experiences and the exhibition Making a Seat at the Table: Women Transform Woodworking.  \nKatie Hudnall (photo by Harold Lee Miller) \nKatie Hudnall received her BFA from the Corcoran College of Art & Design and her MFA from Virginia Commonwealth University in Furniture Design/Woodworking. She has been the recipient of a Virginia Museum of Fine Art Fellowship\, the Windgate Wood Residency at the University of Madison\, Wisconsin\, and Anderson Ranch Residency and most recently a Peter S. Reed Foundation Fellowship. \nHer work has been included in many publications and exhibitions including Studio Furniture: The Next Generation\, Crafting A Continuum: Rethinking Contemporary Craft\, and Beyond Boundaries at SOFA Chicago. \nShe lives and works in Indianapolis\, IN\, where she teaches Furniture Design at Herron School of Art & Design. \nCheryl R. Riley (photo by Tom Grill) \nCheryl R. Riley is an individual artist NEA grant recipient.  Her designs are in the permanent collections of the Smithsonian’s Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum in New York City\, the Smithsonian’s Museum of African-American History & Culture\, the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art\, the Oakland Museum and the Mint Museum of Architecture and Design in Charlotte\, NC.  Her art and designs have been exhibited throughout the United States. \nHer public and institutional art commissions are installed in San Francisco\, Sacramento\, Atlanta and New York City. Since 1993\, she has served on nine selection panels\,  lectured or participated on panels over 40 times.  These include several University of California campuses\, Stanford University\, The Studio Museum in Harlem\, the School of Visual Art in New York\, BARD Graduate Center for Studies of Decorative Arts\, Design & Culture.  She has written for or been featured in more than 10 books and 40 magazine and newspaper articles. \nCheryl has served on the executive boards for the Museum of Arts & Design (MAD)  in NYC\, SFMoMA’s SECA Auxiliary\, the American Craft Council and Capp Street Project (the first site-specific artist residency in the U.S.). Recent residencies include Vermont Studio Center\, Oxbow and BARD College at Simon’s Rock in conjunction with the James Weldon Johnson Foundation. \nCheryl is also an Art Advisor with a focus on artists of the Black African Diaspora.  She currently resides with her wife of 20 years\, the interior designer\, Courtney Sloane\, in a live/work loft space in Jersey City’s Powerhouse Arts District. \nEve-Lena Shermaine Pinder \nEve-Lena Shermaine Pinder\, educator and creative\, is an emerging woodworker and Philadelphia native.  While carving out a career in social services\, empowering underserved populations with the tools to create increased self-sufficiency for themselves and their families\, Eve-Lena\, decided it was time to follow her own counsel and began to pursue her long deferred dreams. Eve-Lena earned a certificate in Carpentry Technology from Camden County College Career and Technical Institute. Spring 2019\, she was selected as a participant in the Building Hero Project\, a Tiny WPA initiative; the training program culminating with the community powered design-build project\, of Samuel Powel Elementary Pollination Garden. During the summer months\, Eve-Lena collaboratively taught product design/woodworking basics\, to high school youths\, at The Village of Arts & Humanities; a learning series\, which led to the students restoration of Ile Ife Park benches. March 2020\, she is planning to test for a local carpentry apprenticeship program. Eve-Lena’s intention is to remain committed to community empowerment and transformation\, while increasingly challenging her comfort zone\, fostering growth within herself and her greater community. \nRosanne Somerson (photo by Cary Wolinsky\, Trillium Studio \nRosanne Somerson – A designer\, professor\, and academic leader\, President Rosanne Somerson has been advancing art and design since she was a student at RISD.  After launching a successful design practice\, she returned to the College to teach and founded the Furniture Design Department before serving as Provost and chief academic officer. \nAs RISD’s 17th president she is committed to expanding inclusion\, equity\, and access in order to enhance a genuinely rich learning environment that consists of diverse experiences\, viewpoints\, and talents. \nPresident Somerson also maintains a creative practice\, designing and creating furniture for exhibitions and commissions\, and frequently speaks and writes about the power of critical thinking and making\, underscoring the value of art and design to advancing life in the 21st century. \nDeirdre Visser \nDeirdre Visser is a curator\, writer\, community-based artist\, and woodworker. As Curator of The Arts at CIIS in San Francisco and publisher of CHROMA books\, she strives to promote pluralism in the arts\, to support artists in the creation of new and experimental work\, and to foster dynamic and critical dialogues within and across communities that propose integrative approaches to the urgent questions of our time. \n  \n  \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it.
