SUMMARY:Object Lesson: Artist & Educator Janine Wang
DESCRIPTION:Object Lesson: Artist & Educator Janine Wang | Fri. Dec 2\, 2022 | 6:00 pm EDT | Hybrid Event \nClick HERE to RSVP \nObject Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that will open wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \n\nJanine Wang discovered woodworking while studying to become an architect\, and once she got her hands on the materials\, she couldn’t go back to drafting at the desk or computer again. She has worked for years in the home goods and furniture design industry while keeping one foot firmly rooted in the woodturning and hand-crafted world. Today she teaches woodworking and woodturning full time\, helping to spread the joy and empowerment of building the environment we live in\, one object at a time.\n\nJanine lives in Philadelphia and teaches at Bucks County Community College and the nonprofit organization TinyWPA. She holds a BArch from the Cooper Union School for the Advancement of Science and Art and an MA in furniture design from the Rhode Island School of Design. She is a member of the AAW\, has exhibited widely and has done residencies at the Goggleworks Center for the Arts\, Arrowmont School of Craft\, Hunterdon Art Museum\, Dovetail Wood Arts\, and the Center for Art in Wood.\n\n\n\n  \n \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? Please contact Katie Sorenson\, Director of Outreach and Communications\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org.

SUMMARY:The Mashrabiya Project – Seeing Through Space Artist Talk: Anila Quayyum Agha
DESCRIPTION:The Mashrabiya Project – Seeing Through Space Artist Talk: Anila Quayyum Agha | Fri. Nov. 18\, 2022 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm EDT | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present a series of free virtual lectures with artists featured in the upcoming exhibition Seeing Through Space\, opening March 3\, 2023\, and running through July 23\, 2023. This series is meant to connect the public with the artists and engage in thoughtful discussions about mashrabiya in the context of architecture\, art\, craft\, and community. Our second lecture will feature artist Anila Quayyum Agha. \n\n\n\nPortrait of Anila Quayyum Agha by Badri \nAnila Quayyum Agha (b. Lahore\, Pakistan) received her BFA from the National College of Arts\, Lahore and an MFA from the University of North Texas. Major solo shows include the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth\, TX; Columbia Art Museum in South Carolina; Peabody Essex Museum in Salem\, MA\, National Sculpture Museum in Valladolid\, Spain\, The Dallas Contemporary Art Museum\, Cincinnati Art Museum\, the Museum of Contemporary Art in Jacksonville\, FL. Philbrook Museum of Art in Tulsa\, North Carolina Art Museum in Raleigh\, and the Toledo Museum of Art in Ohio. For the 2019 Venice Biennial\, Agha was included in a collateral event\, She Persists\, with 22 contemporary feminist artists. Agha has received the Efroymson Art Fellowship\, Cincinnati Art Museum’s 2017 Schiele Prize\, the DeHaan Artist of Distinction Award twice (2018 & 2021) and the Joan Mitchell Painters and Sculptors award in 2019. Agha’s 2014 ArtPrize entry\, titled “Intersections\,” earned the Public Vote Grand Prize and split the Juried Grand Prize in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. She is the recipient of numerous grants from Indiana University\, like the New Frontiers Exploratory grant. For her creative research\, Agha was awarded the highest research honor by Indiana University in 2016\, titled Glenn W. Irwin Research Scholar Award. In 2020\, Agha received an Endowed Chair position titled Morris Eminent Scholar in Art at Augusta University in Georgia\, as well as the prestigious Smithsonian Fellowship in the arts for 2021\, and worked with both SAAM and AAA in Washington DC in May 2022. Her work has been collected by both institutions and private collectors\, nationally and internationally. \nAgha works in a cross-disciplinary fashion with mixed media\, creating artwork that explores global and environmental politics\, cultural multiplicity\, and social and gender roles in our current cultural and global scenario. As a result\, her artwork is conceptually challenging\, producing complicated weaves of thought\, artistic action and social experience. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nImage above: Anila Quayyum Agha\, Intersection shown at Philbrook Museum\, Tulsa\, OK\, 2019 \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:CraftMONTH Dual Tour: FWM + Center for Art in Wood
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to RSVP \nCelebrate CraftMONTH with this guided tour of two best-in-craft exhibitions at The Fabric Workshop and Museum and The Center for Art in Wood. \nAt FWM\, experience Rose B. Simpson Dream House\, an immersive multi-room installation organized as a journey through the artist’s psyche. Inspired by Pueblo architecture\, her ancestral landscape\, and magical realism\, Simpson explores the imprints and through-lines that connect and orient her life as an artist\, an Indigenous person\, and a mother. Through unique displays of ceramics\, textiles\, sculptures\, paintings\, and Simpson’s first-ever works in video\, the artist invites us to navigate the contours of intimacy\, memory\, and belonging. \nAt The Center for Art in Wood\, discover the vessel as a source of inspiration for artists working in wood. Vessel: Embodiment\, Autonomy\, and Ornament in Wood explores eternal questions of offering and ownership\, concealment\, and emptiness. For millennia\, the idea of the vessel has been used to explain the secrets of the universe. This exhibition\, which includes works from the Center’s permanent collection as well as on loan\, demonstrates the breadth of reflection\, empowerment\, subversion\, and spiritual awareness inspired by the act of containment and the vessel form. \nFWM is located at 1214 Arch Street. After touring Rose B. Simpson: Dream House\, stroll down Arch Street and turn left on N 3rd to reach The Center for Art and Wood at 141 N. 3rd Street. \nThis event is co-organized with CraftNOW in conjunction with CraftMONTH and Rose B. SUMMARY:Live Performance and Book Release of Soma
DESCRIPTION:Live Performance and Book Release of Soma | Fri. Oct 14\, 2022 | 6:00 – 7:30 pm | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \n\n\n\n\nJoin us for a live performance and book release with artist Colin Pezzano for his most recent project Soma. Soma is a graphic novel told in 45 woodcuts carved during the winter of 2022. A “mundane horror\,” the narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. During the evening\, Colin Pezzano and Sam Gasparre will be performing a live score of the Soma\, which was animated by Ricky Christian. \n\n\n\n\nColin Pezzano is a woodworker and craft artist based in South Philadelphia. His practice is defined by utilizing digital and hand processes to pass along humor\, pathos\, and memory into his chosen materials. Colin graduated from the University of the Arts in 2014 with a BFA in Crafts and shortly after received the Windgate Fellowship Award. In 2022\, he received the Windgate-Lamar Fellowship Award\, given to awardees who have continued to evolve their practice post-graduation. Colin has had two solo shows\, “Contain You” and “Still Life With Dead Game\,” at Bridgette Mayer Gallery and Allens Lane Art Center\, respectfully\, and is currently exhibiting work in The Wharton Esherick Museum’s “Home as Stage” to celebrate the Museum’s 50th anniversary. This installation coincides with the release of Colin’s book\, Soma\, a graphic novel in woodcuts. During his career\, Pezzano has participated in group shows\, juried exhibitions and attended residencies in the USA and Sweden. He maintains his practice in his basement studio. \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:The Mashrabiya Project - Seeing Through Space Artist Talk: Hoda Tawakol
DESCRIPTION:The Mashrabiya Project – Seeing Through Space Artist Talk: Hoda Tawakol | Thurs. Oct. 13\, 2022 | 11 am – 12 pm EDT | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present a series of free virtual lectures with artists featured in the upcoming exhibition Seeing Through Space\, opening March 3\, 2023\, and running through July 23\, 2023. This series is meant to connect the public with the artists and engage in thoughtful discussions about mashrabiya in the context of architecture\, art\, craft\, and community. Our inaugural lecture will feature Hamburg-based artist Hoda Tawakol. \nHoda Tawakol’s practice is built on the twin pillars of wit and criticality. Her colorful\, engaging textile works—collages\, sculptures\, installations—ripple with vitality\, while tackling compelling issues of gender and bodily control. At once captivating and disarming\, the works spring from a range of media\, yet focus largely on the female body\, its distortions and transformations across a woman’s lifecycle. The artist’s hallmark fabric sculptures of date palm trees\, while stemming from the plant realm\, wittily probe bodily questions of gender fluidity. This is a universe of transformation: the body forever hovers between physical and ethereal\, reality and abstraction\, presence and absence. \nTawakol herself is culturally liminal. Egypt-born\, raised in France and Germany by an interchanging trio of ‘mothers\,’ she not only navigates an ‘in-between’ that percolates through her identity\, she layers this suspension into her practice. Her works are spirited—boisterous\, wall-filling textile collages\, rambunctious fabric installations\, and plump sculptures that revel in the uncanny. Yet wrapped within these vigorous creations lie deeper questions around biopower\, control\, and corporal manipulation. \nTawakol’s practice vibrates with feminist energy. While her hand-dyed and intimately sewn textile pieces clearly signpost questions of women’s labor\, she also interrogates the wider yet more insidious forces (social\, biological\, cultural) impacting the female body. Sculptural gestures of abstraction and manipulation probe gender restrictions; superposed grids and lattices conjure sensations of confinement\, concealment\, repression; allusions to ancient rituals and embodied practices fathom death and procreation. \nWhile her artistic stance is precise—stay vivacious yet critical\, vaguely salacious yet deeply earnest—her material mastery is vast. A diversity of unpredictable hand-dyeing techniques—batik\, spotting\, painting\, tie-dye—vivify her textile work. Similarly\, her watercolour and ink compositions on paper are the fruit of a teetering negotiation with chance\, and a surprising relinquishing of control. Her sculptures\, whether assertively figurative or cryptically morphed\, enlist a variety of materials with which she consistently experiments. \nHoda Tawakol’s work has been exhibited in numerous institutions and galleries in Germany\, including  Schirn Kunsthalle in Frankfurt\, Weserburg Museum of Modern Art in Bremen\, Religio Westfälisches Museum für religiöse Kultur in Telgte\, Kunstverein in Hamburg\, Kunsthaus in Hamburg\, and Produzentengalerie in Hamburg and Berlin. Internationally\, she has shown at Sfeir-Semler gallery in Germany and Lebanon\, Beton Art Space in Denmark\, and at 10th Velada Santa Lucía in Venezuela. \nHer work appears in the following collections: The Salama bint Hamdan Al Nahyan Foundation (SHF)\, Abu Dhabi; The Progressive Art Collection\, USA; Huma Kabakci Collection\, Turkey\, UK; Sammlung Haus N\, Germany; Weserburg Museum Collection\, Germany\, among others. \nTop image: Hoda Tawakol\, Mashrabiya #5\, from the “Idolatry” series\, 2017. SUMMARY:Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program Panel Discussion
DESCRIPTION:Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program Panel Discussion | Mon. Oct 3\, 2022 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm | LIVE on ZOOM\nCLICK HERE TO RSVP \n  \nJoin us for a panel discussion with the 2022 Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program moderated by 2019 residency alumni John-Dune Kingsley on Monday\, October 3rd. We’ll learn about their experiences\, collaborations\, and breakthroughs during the residency. Don’t miss this special event. \n  \nKailee Bosch\, Student Artist\nKailee Bosch is from Fort Collins\, Colorado. She obtained a BFA in Sculpture and Pottery from Colorado State University in 2020. Her practice stems from a background in woodturning\, growing up in her father’s shop making small objects on the lathe. Currently Kailee primarily works with wood and bronze\, blending traditional craft practices with digital fabrication and making both functional objects and speculative designs. \n  \n  \nKatie Hudnall\, Visual Documentarian and Artist\nKatie Hudnall builds other-worldly\, interactive furnitural objects that behave in expected and unexpected ways.  She received an MFA in woodworking/furniture design from Virginia Commonwealth University and a BFA in Sculpture from the Corcoran College of Art in Washington\, DC.  She lives and works in Madison\, WI\, where she runs the Wood & Furniture program at the University of Madison\, Wisconsin. Hudnall joined the residency program as an artist in 2016 and is looking forward to returning this summer as the group’s Visual Documentarian.  She is looking forward to sharing the residents’ experience through the blog posts\, as well as through sketchbook drawings and small cabinets that will contain some of the “artifacts” from this year’s adventures and cohort. \n  \n  \nJames Maurelle\, Artist\nJames Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, and sound art are his analog and digital primes. His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity; at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions: the accompaniment\, i.e.\, tools and materials\, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know one’s instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. His work has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York\, Minneapolis-Saint Paul\, Austin\, Philadelphia\, New Orleans\, Richmond\, Cincinnati\, and San Francisco. He is a recipient of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Fellowship (2015). \n  \nJanice Smith\, Artist\nFor 40 years\, Janice has been designing and building unique wood furniture. Her interest in furniture began when “Shop for Girls”\nwas offered for the first time in high school. She still love turning ideas into reality. She especially enjoys creating a sense of movement in her designs and playing with balance and asymmetry. \n  \n  \nChris Storb\, Artist\nChris has worked professionally in the historic furniture field for over 40 years. His expertise is in the history of woodworking techniques\, processes\, and materials\, coupled with the ability to share that expertise in a meaningful way with the public. Chris worked in the conservation department of the Philadelphia Museum of Art since 2003 where he collaborated on the conservation of a broad range of American furniture in the Museum’s collection. Most recently he worked for the Dietrich American Foundation at the Philadelphia Museum of Art performing an examination\, assessment\, and treatment of over 150 wood objects in the Foundation’s collection. He has published and lectured widely on historic furniture\, woodcarving\, and the history of woodworking and continues to write for his blog “In Proportion to the Trouble.” \n  \nD Wood\, Scholar\nD Wood designed and made furniture to earn a Diploma in Crafts and Design at Sheridan College in Canada and an MFA at the Rhode Island School of Design. Her PhD from the University of Otago was about craft and studio furniture in New Zealand. She is the editor of and a contributor to Craft is Political (Bloomsbury 2021). \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nJohn-Duane Kingsley\, 2019 Scholar and Panel Moderator\nJohn-Duane Kingsley is a divergent thinker whose professional work and interests straddle LGBTQIA+ identity and representation within museums\, historic interiors\, contemporary craft/design\, and public education. Because these topics aren’t contained by a specific institution or discipline\, Kingsley created the DANDYCRAFT website to serve as a publicly accessible repository of his work. \nAfter pursuing an MA in Decorative Arts & Design History from George Washington University\, Kingsley moved to Detroit\, Michigan\, to supervise the design of custom reproduction furniture and decorative arts for the restoration of Fair Lane: The Home of Clara & Henry Ford. His consulting work for Twisted Preservation Cultural Consulting focuses on interpreting LGBTQIA+ narratives in cultural heritage sites. Kingsley is a published author writing on contemporary craft and design\, can be found in MetalSmith Magazine\, The Journal of Modern Craft\, and exhibit catalog for allTURNatives at the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia\, PA\, and as a contributing writer for the Decorative Arts Trust Bulletin. \n  \nThe Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program is a collegial experience in which the resident Fellows explore new work through research\, exploration\, and collaboration. The Center for Art in Wood awards prestigious fellowships for the annual residency program\, selecting from an international pool of applicants. Fellowships consist of five artists\, a visual documentarian\, a scholar/educator/writer\, and a student artist. Fellows work either solely in wood or in other materials in meaningful combination with wood. Applicants must exhibit proficiency in woodworking techniques in order to be eligible. The residency concludes in an exhibition at the Center for Art in Wood comprising work made by Fellows before and during the program. \nDonate \nFor questions\, contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org

Become one by clicking HERE \n*Registration for this workshop closes September 23\, 2022 \n\n\n\nBandsaw boxes are fun and verstile projects that push the boundaries and constraints of typical box making. A perfect project for novices and experienced woodworkers alike\, they are made from a single block of wood. Various forms and textures can be explored just by using the bandsaw and few other machines and hand tools. \nIn this one day workshop\, participants will learn safe practices in the studio while creating their own unique box. During the morning session\, participants will design\, cut\, and assemble the pieces for their box. The afternoon session will focus on sanding\, texturing\, paints\, and finishes. \nTara Bellofatto is a Craft + Material Studies/Woodworking graduate of the University of the Arts. Her design style is eclectic\, inspired by various artistic movements and pop culture references. Formerly a lecturer and studio technician at the university\, she currently practices out of her home studio in Southern New Jersey. \n\n  \n  \n  \nABOUT GLEN FOERD\nGlen Foerd\, listed on the National Register of Historic Places\, is located on 18 acres at the confluence of the Poquessing Creek and Delaware River. It is the only remaining riverfront estate in Philadelphia open to the public. The estate was saved from demolition by a coalition of dedicated neighbors in the immediate community. They formed the non-profit Glen Foerd Conservation Corporation to manage and operate the estate\, which is leased from Philadelphia Parks and Recreation. Glen Foerd stewards an eclectic riverfront estate for the enjoyment and educational benefit of the community. Drawing from the estate’s architecture\, art\, material culture\, and history – as well as its gardens and waterways – Glen Foerd provides inclusive experiences that spark curiosity and support Philadelphia’s natural and cultural ecosystems. The estate grounds are free to the public and open every day from dawn to dusk. \nABOUT THE CENTER FOR ART IN WOOD\nThe Center for Art in Wood is a museum of contemporary art\, craft\, and design in the material of wood. SUMMARY:How it Started and How it’s Going: Collector talk with Randy Pi
DESCRIPTION:How it Started and How it’s Going: Collector talk with Randy Pi | Wed. Sept 14\, 2022 | 6:30 pm EDT | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for How it Started and How it’s Going\, a speaker series with collectors. We’ll dive into their collections and learn about how they got started and why; we’ll hear what attracts them to certain pieces and see some of their favorite works. We will also discuss what makes someone a collector of art and how to start your own collection. Our next talk features collector and ER physician Randy Pi. \nPortrait of Randy Pi with some of his collection. \nRandy Pi: I’m an ER physician by night and a world traveler\, music lover\, and\, as my friends say\, patron of the arts by day.  I am so uplifted by incredible sights and sounds on my global jaunts.  Human artistic and architectural achievements as well as scenes of natural grandeur fill me with awe and humility. They inspire me to stay motivated and resilient in my demanding line of work. The tallest tree in the world is right here in my home state of California. The widest tree in the world is located in not-too-far Oaxaca\, Mexico where local artisans produce some of the world’s most exquisite woodworks. I can’t bring any giant trees home. I can’t bring any timber-constructed ancient castles from around the world home.  But I can bring music from different cultures home.  And by golly I can bring contemporary sculptures\, turned wood art and designs\, studio furniture\,  and traditional crafts home.  Living with wood art is a continuous source of joy and inspiration. When one thinks of music and wood\, the violin comes to mind. But for the home\, there is another important connection\, namely the stereo speakers. The illusion of live music playing at home can only be created by stereo speakers of sufficient size and volume. The vast majority of these speakers are wood constructions. And so at the confluence of engineering\, design\, and ethereal music lie the first wood sculptures at my home—stereo speakers. Looking back\, that’s where the story of my wood collection began. Hope you’ll join me as this story unfolds. It shall be one filled with lyrical and creative souls I’ve met along the way. \nDon’t miss this special glimpse into a collection! \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:Queering Wood Craft: An LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 5
DESCRIPTION:Queering Wood Craft: An LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 5 | Sat. Sept 10\, 2022 | 1:00 pm ET | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Center for Art in Wood launched a series of conversations with queer woodworkers. Independent scholar and curator John-Duane Kingsley will lead this edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. Join us for an enlightening and fun afternoon. \nJohn-Duane Kingsley is a divergent thinker whose professional work and interests straddle LGBTQIA+ identity and representation within museums\, historic interiors\, contemporary craft/design\, and public education. \nDONATE \nQuestions?
