We’ll offer a glimpse at the upcoming exhibition catalogues for our current exhibition Extra-Human: The Art of Michael Ferris\, as well as the upcoming Spoons to Stir the Soul: The World of Norm Sartorius\, discuss the creative process that goes into art book design\, and ponder the importance of art books in our own lives. While you’re here\, you can shop a wide range of books in our store. Stick around and get inspired by the fruits of knowledge\, in word and image\, at the Center! \n\nPortrait of Rebecca Leffell Koren \nRebecca Leffell Koren is a graphic designer working in publication\, exhibition\, and identity design. She collaborates with artists\, cultural and educational institutions\, and commercial clients. Her client and research practice derives type-driven concepts and seeks opportunities to interrogate the dimensional qualities of each project\, from book objects to spaces and surfaces. \nPreviously she has worked for the Israel Museum\, Jerusalem\, the RISD Museum in Providence\, RI\, and This Is Our Work in New York. Clients include Friends of the High Line\, Humans of St. Louis\, Washington University in St. Louis\, Open Source Architecture\, UrbanGlass\, and the Museum of Jewish Montreal.Rebecca holds an MFA in graphic design from the Rhode Island School of Design and a BFA in Communication Design from the Sam Fox School of Design & Visual Arts at Washington University in St. Louis where she is currently a Senior Lecturer in Communication Design. \n  \nPortrait of Ash Macri \nAsh Macri is a Chicago native who migrated to Philadelphia to attend Drexel University and pursue a degree in Graphic Design. After discovering there is way more to Philly than the cheesesteaks\, Ash has spent more than fifteen years honing her design skills. Her work has focused on everything from creating strong brand identities to finding unique visual solutions to communication challenges. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nPortrait of Dan Saal \nDan Saal has worked in various design studios during his career and has spent the last 10+ years working independently. Prior to that\, Dan served as the director of design and publications at the Milwaukee Art Museum until 2008. After leaving MAM\, Dan expanded his art-centered design specialty\, working with museums\, art & cultural institutions\, and independent collectors. \nDan has designed more than 35 major publications over the last 15 years. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nAnjan Chatterjee\, MD\, FAAN \nAnjan Chatterjee is Professor of Neurology\, Psychology\, and Architecture at the University of Pennsylvania and the founding director of the Penn Center for Neuroaesthetics. He received his BA in Philosophy from Haverford College\, MD from the University of Pennsylvania and completed his neurology residency at the University of Chicago. \nThe past Chair of Neurology at Pennsylvania Hospital\, Dr. Chatterjee’s clinical practice focuses on patients with cognitive disorders. His research addresses neuroaesthetics\, spatial cognition\, language\, and neuroethics. He wrote The Aesthetic Brain: How we evolved to desire beauty and enjoy art and co-edited: Neuroethics in Practice: Mind\, medicine\, and society\, The Roots of Cognitive Neuroscience: Behavioral neurology and neuropsychology and the forthcoming Brain\, Beauty\, and Art: Bringing Neuroaesthetics in Focus. His editorial services include: American Journal of Bioethics: Neuroscience\, Behavioural Neurology\, Cognitive and Behavioral Neurology\, Empirical Studies of the Arts\, European Neurology\, Journal of Cognitive Neuroscience\, Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease\, Journal of the International Neuropsychological Society\, European Neurology\, Neuropsychology\, and The Psychology of Aesthetics\, Creativity\, and the Arts. He received the Norman Geschwind Prize in Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology by the American Academy of Neurology and the Rudolph Arnheim Prize for contributions to Psychology and the Arts by the American Psychological Association. \nDr. Chatterjee is a founding member of the Board of Governors of the Neuroethics Society\, the past President of the International Association of Empirical Aesthetics\, and the Behavioral and Cognitive Neurology Society. During his presentation\, Ferris will share insights about portraiture\, the cultural and art-historical influences behind his unique visual language\, and the humble materials that give form to his body of work. Don’t miss your chance to meet the artist behind this singular figurative sculpture and his timeless\, larger-than-life portrayal of everyday people. Extra-Human: The Art of Michael Ferris is on view at the Center for Art in Wood through April 24\, 2022. \nThe larger-than-life figurative sculptures of Bronx-based artist Michael Ferris embody a rich fusion of cultural and artistic traditions. Trained as a painter\, Ferris embraced sculpture twenty-five years ago and developed an inlay technique inspired by intarsia woodworking from his Middle-Eastern heritage. Ferris’s unique approach to this historical process involves the reclaiming of discarded wood\, a method informed by his environmental concerns. We’ll hear Liv speak about her method\, why she chooses to work in the materials she does\, and what contemporary jewelry means to her. She lives and works in Østre Toten\, Norway. \nBlåvarp studied at the College of Art and Design Oslo in 1979–83\, and went on to the Royal College of Art\, London\, where she studied in 1983–84. \nShe was a member of the TRIKK group\, made up of fellow metalsmithing graduates from her alma mater in 1983–87. \nMoving from Oslo and back to her home in southeast Norway allowed her to work full-time in her own studio\, which she has done since 1984. \nHer work has been shown internationally\, including solo exhibitions in Norway\, and her work is held in museum collections in Norway\, Denmark\, Sweden\, Germany\, Scotland\, Canada\, Australia\, and the United States. \nIn addition to her jewelry-scaled work\, Blåvarp has also created commissioned art work for several public spaces in Norway. Her work has been published in two books\, including Liv Blåvarp: Jewellery Structures in Wood (Arnoldsche Art Publishers\, 2017). \nShe is a Member of the curatorial board of the Peder Balke Center\, a gallery and cultural gathering place in her home region. Artist and educator Katherine Lam will lead this edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. November 5\, 2021 | 5 – 8 pm EDT | In-Person Event\nThe Center for Art in Wood invites you to celebrate the opening of its new exhibition\, Extra-Human: The Art of Michael Ferris on the evening of Friday\, November 5. \nThe larger-than-life figurative sculptures of Bronx-based artist Michael Ferris embody a rich fusion of cultural and artistic traditions. Trained as a painter\, Ferris embraced sculpture twenty-five years ago and developed an inlay technique inspired by intarsia woodworking from his Middle-Eastern heritage. Ferris’s unique approach to this historical process involves the reclaiming of discarded wood\, a method informed by his environmental concerns. We’ll hear David speak about his method\, why he chooses to work in the materials he does\, and what contemporary jewelry means to him. Don’t miss this fascinating discussion with David Beilander. \n  \n\n\n\n\nDavid Bielander\, is a Swiss-born artist\, based in Munich\, Germany. \nHis works investigate questions about identity\, affiliation\, judgment\, and perception\, how it is steered\, and how one can shift it. \n“Bielander takes the familiarity of everyday objects and combines them with a witty ab- straction to create truly uncanny pieces of wearable art.”* \nThe creation of iconic works of contemporary jewelry like Lip (1999)\, Scampi (2007)\, Python (2011)\, or Cardboard (2015) makes him one of the key jewelry artists working today. \nHe has won numerous awards including the Herbert Hoffmann Prize in 2010\, the Fran- coise van den Bosch Award in 2012\, and the Swiss Grand Prix Award in 2017. \nAfter an apprenticeship as a goldsmith in Basel and working for Georg Spreng in Schwä- bisch Gmünd\, Germany\, he studied from 1995 until 2001 at the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich with Prof Otto Künzli\, graduating as a Meisterschüler in 2002.\nFrom 2006 until 2010 David Bielander was the creative assistant of Prof Daniel Kruger at the Burg Giebichenstein University of Art and Design\, Halle/Saale\, and from 2011 until 2013 external tutor in the Jewellery Department of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie in Amsterdam (NL). \nHis work is represented by Ornamentum Gallery in Hudson\, NY (US)\, Rob Koudijs in Amsterdam (NL)\, Gallery S O in London and Solothurn (GB/CH)\, Gallery Funaki in Mel- bourne (AU)\, Antonella Villanova in Florence (IT)\, Galerie Wittenbrink in Munich (DE) and ATTA gallery Bangkok (TH). \n\n\n  \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nFor questions\, contact Katie Sorenson\, Senior Manager of Partnerships and Engagement\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org \n  \n\n\n

DESCRIPTION:What is Contemporary Jewelry (and Why Should We Care)? | Thurs. September 23\, 2021 | 6:30 pm EDT | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a panel discussion with contemporary jewelry historians and experts Helen W. Drutt English\, Elizabeth Essner\, and Bella Neyman\, with Philadelphia-based artist Caroline Gore. \nHelen W. Drutt English (Helen Drutt) was Founder/Director of her eponymous gallery in Philadelphia (1973–2002)\, which was among the first in the United States to commit to the modern and contemporary craft movement. In 1973\, she developed the first syllabus for a college-level course of the history of the field. \nShe has received numerous awards and three honorary degrees\, including a doctorate from Alfred University. Drutt is a fellow of the American Craft Council\, and serves on the American Board\, National Gallery of Australia; the Peter Dormer Lecture Advisory Committee\, London\, and the American board of the Ilias Lalaounis Jewelry Museum\, Athens. She was a trustee of the Archives of American Art\, Smithsonian Institution\, Washington\, DC (2010-21); served on the Advisory Committee\, Indian and Himalayan Art\, Philadelphia Museum of Art (1996-2019); and was a curatorial consultant for The Hermitage Museum Foundation: USA (2013-15). \nDrutt built a permanent collection of contemporary crafts for the State Hermitage Museum\, St. Petersburg\, Russia\, and is building a collection of American craft for the National Museum of Sweden. Her own collection of international studio jewelry has exhibited in the US and abroad; in 2002\, 800 works entered the permanent collection of the Museum of Fine Arts\, Houston. \nJewelry exhibitions organized by Drutt include\, “Brooching it Diplomatically: A Tribute to Madeleine K. Albright” (1998-2001)\, “Challenging the Chatelaine!” (2006-07)\, American studio jewelry for the Museo del Gioiello Vicenza\, Italy (2016-18)\, and most recently “Rings!” at Moore College of Art\, Philadelphia (2021)\, which will travel in 2022. \n  \nElizabeth Essner is an independent curator\, writer\, and researcher based in Brooklyn\, New York. She has curated exhibitions for the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum in Connecticut\, Arizona State University Art Museum\, and R & Company in New York\, where she organized Body/Motion\, a solo exhibition of the Japanese-born\, Thailand-based jeweler and artist Aya Ito. Recently\, Elizabeth served as a researcher for RINGS!\, curated by Helen Drutt at Moore College of Art & Design. She was also a co-author and researcher for the recently published Shapes from Out of Nowhere: Ceramics from the Robert A. Ellison Jr. Collection\, the companion catalogue to an exhibition and gift to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. A 2017 Curatorial Fellow with the Center for Craft\, Elizabeth received her MA from the Bard Graduate Center in New York. \n  \nBella Neyman is the co-founder of New York City Jewelry Week. She is also an independent curator and journalist specializing in contemporary jewelry. Most recently she served on the Curatorial Advisory Committee for “45 Stories in Jewelry: 1947 to Now” (on view through 2022) at the Museum of Arts and Design in New York.  Since graduating with a Master’s Degree in Decorative Arts and Design History from Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum & Parsons\, The New School for Design in 2008\, she has worked for some of New York City’s leading design galleries. Bella’s articles have been published in The New York Times\, American Craft\, and the Magazine Antiques. She is also a frequent contributor to Metalsmith magazine. Bella lectures on topics related to the history of jewelry at the 92Y Jewelry Center and Christie’s Education. She is on the Board of Art Jewelry Forum. Mark grew up in Delaware County\, Pennsylvania\, and is also referred to as Delco\, was the setting for many scenes from the HBO series Mare of Easttown.  Mark will share reflections of growing up in that area\, the relevant history that relates to the series\, and his visits to some of the scene locations. \nMark Sfirri taught full time in the Fine Woodworking Program at Bucks County Community College in Newtown\, Pennsylvania from 1981 and became professor emeritus in 2017. He has been a maker\, researcher\, and writer and has conducted demonstrations and lectures throughout North America\, England\, France\, Ireland\, Norway\, Australia\, and New Zealand. \nHis work is included in twenty-eight public collections including The Museum of Arts & Design (NY)\, Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh PA)\, The Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art  Museum (DC)\, The Minneapolis Institute of Art (MN)\, The Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA)\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the James A. Sculpture artist\, furniture maker\, and landscape architect Jack Larimore has been making three-dimensional work in various media for 35 years. His upcoming exhibition\, Jack Larimore: Sculpture\, will spotlight recent large-scale installations by the artist. Sept 3\, 2021 | 3 – 4 pm | LIVE on Zoom\nClick HERE to RSVP \nObject Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that will open wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. This month we will hear from Cairo-based Ahmed Abdelazim talk about the John Grass Wood Turning Company’s balusters. \nAhmed Abdelazim holds a BA in Architecture\, MA in Islamic Art\, MA in Anthropology (both from the American University in Cairo)\, and a current Ph.D. candidate in Art History at UW-Madison. Abdelazim’s work examines the material and visual culture of Egypt during the second half of the 20th century and is interested in the social life of objects and how discourses develop around them.\n  \n  \n  \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? Then\, join us for an evening to talk about the residency and answer any questions you might have. \nAbout the Residency: \nThe Center for Art in Wood and NextFab launched Winter Residency Program is 2021\, and we’re excited about the second session. The program is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia working in the medium of wood. We invite applications for the 2022 session from artists who work either solely in wood or other materials in combination with wood and demonstrate technical proficiency with woodworking equipment. Reflecting our mutual support of environmental stewardship\, reclaimed wood must comprise at least fifty percent of the work during the residency. A jury of makers and educators will award one fellowship annually\, and the residency culminates in a solo exhibition in the gallery at NextFab’s new North Philadelphia location. This residency is a collaboration between the Center for Art in Wood and NextFab\, a network of member-based maker spaces. \nApplications for the 2022 Winter Residency open August 1\, closing on September 15\, 2021.

August 6\, 2021 | 5 – 8 pm EDT | at The Center for Art in Wood\nJoin us for the return of First Friday and the opening of Out of Bounds: The Art of Croquet a “striking” exhibition of artist-made mallets and balls. Curated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Artistic Director at the Center for Art in Wood\, and Northampton\, Massachusetts-based furniture maker Silas Kopf—both amateur devotees of the sport—the exhibition features works by twenty-one artists who were invited to take part based on their demonstrated commitment to sculpture and design in the material of wood. Responding to the game\, its history and impact on pop culture\, and formal aspects of the croqueterie\, these works explore a wide range of topics—from personal artistic concerns to contemporary social issues—with clarity\, wit\, and sportsmanship. \nOut of Bounds was organized by the Messler Gallery at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship\, Rockport\, Maine.
