SUMMARY:Umbra: A Live Score to the Novel in Woodcut
DESCRIPTION:Umbra: A Live Score to the Novel in Woodcut | Wed. April 29\, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:30 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE for TICKETS \nFollowing the release of his second graphic novel\, Umbra\, this past fall\, artist Colin Pezzano presents both Umbra and his debut Soma in a unique multimedia experience—featuring animations by Ricky Christian set to live musical scores for each work. SUMMARY:Gallery Talk with BA Harrington and Viola Bordon
DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk with BA Harrington and Viola Bordon | Sat. April 4\, 2026 | 11:00 am – 12:00 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a gallery talk with artists BA Harrington and Viola Bordon. These two exhibitions\, Viola Bordon: Muliebrity and BA Harington: Suite Américaine\, are a part of Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by The Clay Studio and a consortium of Philadelphia’s extensive collection of arts and cultural institutions that celebrate how today’s artists are continuing the city’s unique and rich legacy as a center for creativity and civic engagement. To learn more about the other participating artists and organizations\, please click HERE. \nAbout the Artist:\nSince 2012\, BA Harrington has been a Professor of Woodworking in the Department of Art and Design and Director of the Wood Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She continues to write essays\, speak at conferences\, and build sculptural work in reference to early American furniture forms. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Each year this substantial mid-career grant is awarded to two artists who are revising\, reclaiming\, and advancing the history of craft through their work. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nViola Bordon is an artist and educator based in Philadelphia whose work examines transformation across material\, ecological\, and social systems. Her quilting is an act that binds histories of labor\, belief\, and resistance. Working through inherited methods of reuse and repair\, she frames systems of power that shape both personal and collective experience. Her quilts negotiate structures that hold tension between faith and skepticism\, memory and material. Quiet repetitive labor forming articulated dissent\, allowing form itself to think through what endurance makes visible. Her practice also includes environmental installations\, drawing on methods of reuse\, endurance\, and collaboration. Her projects have been supported by the Fulbright Commission\, Lilly Endowment\, Sachs Program for Arts Innovation\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and Salt Planes State Park. Bordon’s teaching and research emphasize tactile knowledge and the quiet radicality of sustained attention to material and processes. \nSuite Américaine and Muliebrity are generously supported by the Cambium Giving Society of the Museum for Art in Wood\, Radical Americana\, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, The Bresler Foundation\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, Philadelphia Cultural Fund\, the William Penn Foundation\, and Windgate Foundation. \nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:First Friday Opening for Viola Bordon: Muliebrity
DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for Viola Bordon: Muliebrity | Fri. March 6\, 2026 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for the opening of Viola Bordon: Muliebrity! While you’re at the Museum\, experience American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood and make sure to explore our permanent collection of over 1\,400 objects and shop our Museum Store for unique handmade objects\, jewelry\, artworks\, and books. \n\nViola Bordon: Muliebrity is a part of Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by a consortium of Philadelphia’s extensive collection of arts and cultural institutions that celebrate how today’s artists are continuing the city’s unique and rich legacy as a center for creativity and civic engagement. To learn more about the other participating artists and organizations\, please click HERE. \nSince the American Revolution\, the Roman goddess Libertas has personified the nation’s ideals\, embodying evolving definitions of freedom and belonging. The 1886 dedication of the Statue of Liberty\, however\, unfolded amid national conflict over the boundaries of liberty\, including the end of Reconstruction\, debates over immigration\, and the rise of women’s suffrage. Drawing on archival research at the American Historical Society\, textile artist Viola Bordon examines “Lady Liberty” as a fragmented American icon. Her triptych Muliebrity\, composed through appliqué and found textiles\, invokes a distinctly feminine power grounded in endurance and embodied knowledge\, prompting us to consider how figures of womanhood have been repeatedly mobilized to serve patriarchal institutions.\n\nAbout the Artist: \nViola Bordon is a Philadelphia-based sculptor and fiber artist whose work explores themes of power\, boundary\, control\, the body\, labor\, faith\, religion\, and isolation. She holds an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and a BFA from Washington University in St. Louis. Bordon has presented her work in exhibitions and site-based installations throughout the United States\, South Asia\, and Australia.\n\nViola Bordon: Muliebrity is generously supported by Radical Americana\, the Cambium Giving Society of the Museum for Art in Wood\, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, The Bresler Foundation\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, Philadelphia Cultural Fund\, William Penn Foundation\, and Windgate Foundation. \n\nThe Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:A Special Musical Performance by TR7 and Jamaaladeen Tacuma
DESCRIPTION:A Special Musical Performance by TR7 and Jamaaladeen Tacuma | Thurs. Jan 15\, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nRSVP \nJoin us for a special musical performance celebrating the current exhibition\, A Usable Past: Reflections of a Nation and Its Inheritance\, featuring artists Taji Ra’oof Nahl (TR7) and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. The performance will echo themes of cultural identities inherited through family or migration\, the building of new legacies within a heterogeneous society\, the fragility of democratic ideals\, and the failures of systems that promise unity\, liberty\, and self-governance. \nAbout the Artists \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Taji Ra’oof Nahl (TR7) is a Philadelphia-based conceptual artist whose practice merges sculpture\, sound\, performance\, and experimental cinema into a site-responsive method he calls Field Trips to Staged Productions. A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts\, his work explores civic infrastructures\, ecological intelligence\, Islamic cosmology\, and African American intellectual lineage. His ongoing Abstract Dynamics series—often realized as duo projects—extends this approach through live scoring\, moving-image presentation\, and spatial activation. TR7 is the founder of Ra’oof Atelier\, Channel TR7\, Adam Vocabulary Club\, and The Other Sounds of Philadelphia. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Few musicians leave their audiences with a feeling that they have truly witnessed something amazing. Artist/Producer/Performer/Arranger/Innovator AND Bassist—JAMAALADEEN TACUMA does just that. This native Philadelphian has always stretched the old mold of what a bassist is supposed to play and how. Tacuma has redefined his instrument’s artistic potential. In the mid 70’s\, his creatively free approach to the bass caught the eye and ear of the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Tacuma became a member of Coleman’s electric band\, Prime Time\, he toured with the group and played on some of Coleman’s historic recordings such as: “Dancing In Your Head”\, “Body Meta”\, and “Of Human Feelings”. As a soloist\, Tacuma continued to push the musical envelope with his debut album\, simply titled “Showstopper\,” in 1983. Several records followed\, some of which include: Renaissance Man (1984)\, Music World (1987) and JukeBox (1989)\, Cosmetic\, Boss of The Bass\, which confirmed his ability to flip between various musical genres. Even the critics have had high praise for Tacuma’s musicianship and artistry. One year he received the highest number of votes ever for an electric bassist in the “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” category of the DownBeat critics’ poll. \n\nIn recent years\, Jamaaladeen has been gaining recognition from some of the United States most prestigious artist foundations. In 2011\, Jamaaladeen received the Pew Arts & Heritage Award\, the Marcus Garvey Foundation Award\, and the Uptown Theater Hall of Fame Award in 2014. Jamaaladeen has received composer’s residencies at the prestigious MacDowell Colony\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, and Civitella Rainier Italy\, where he composed a new project he will be presenting in 2015. He was honored in 2018 with Philadelphia’s Benny Golson Award and Liberty Bell Medal\, in 2020  Jazz Journalist Association “Philadelphia Jazz Hero Award”\, 2021 South Arts Creative Residency Grant\, and Mid Atlantic Arts International award. In 2023\, he was honored by Morocco with the Visa Music Award. Staying true to his artistic and experimental approach to music\, Tacuma consistently brings fans worldwide musical peace and happiness. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n This event is free to the public. SUMMARY:Queering Wood Craft: an LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 12b
DESCRIPTION:Queering Wood Craft: an LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 12b | Sat\, January 10\, 2026 | Zoom\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Museum for Art in Wood’s series of conversations with queer woodworkers is back for another installment this winter. Entrepreneur\, teacher\, and artist Sterling Cruz-Herr will co-host with artist\, educator\, and wood sculptor Leo Louise this edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. \nJoin us for this enlightening and community-filled afternoon. \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n About the Co-hosts\n \n \n \n \n \n Sterling is only young in woodworker years; but they nonetheless are building a business — T4Timbers — with products for the queer/trans community and our allies. What they lack in woodworking experience\, they are trying to offset with communication skills garnered over decades. \n \n \n \n \n \n Leo Louise (they/them) is a queer and trans artist\, educator\, and wood sculptor based in Baltimore\, MD. They transform found wood into sculptural objects that honor queerness\, abundance\, and cooperation in nature. As a self-taught artist\, Leo came into woodworking through community networks and mutual learning—not formal training. That DIY lineage informs their commitment as an educator to demystify craft and challenge who gets to belong in spaces of making. They are a woodworking instructor and shop monitor at Baltimore’s Station North Tool Library and travel often to teach and assist fellow woodworkers at craft schools across the country.  \n \n \n \n \n \n This event is free to the public. SUMMARY:First Friday Opening for American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood
DESCRIPTION:First Friday Opening for American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood | Fri. Dec. 5\, 2025 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nPlease join us for the First Friday opening of American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood! \nDuring the 1970s\, prominent American woodturners like Bob Stocksdale and David Ellsworth marshalled their virtuosic talents to turn vessels that showcased the natural and idiosyncratic features of wood such as knots\, infestations\, and complex grain figure. Embracing species such as Brazilian rosewood\, African blackwood\, and pink ivory wood that appeared “exotic” to American audiences\, these artists highlighted the drama of naturally occurring figuration. By the 1980s\, artists began to challenge this prevailing orthodoxy; pioneers like Meryll Saylan questioned the creative value of rarefied wood types and the field’s prevailing rejection of surface decoration. American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood follows the rebellious\, experimental\, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain. \nDrawn from the Museum’s permanent collection\, American Graffiti presents twenty-one objects by eighteen artists. Works of turning\, carving\, and sculpture demonstrate how the allure of color and surface design has captivated artists working in wood. For some\, wood offers a blank canvas for representational sculpture\, embellished by the application of vivid paint or imagery. For others\, dye and surface texturing deepens the exploration of formal qualities like shape and volume\, without the distraction of figured patterning. Taken together\, these artists offer a tongue in cheek response to collectors\, enthusiasts\, and critics that limit their appreciation of wood art to the beauty of strictly natural features. Through automotive lacquer\, fiberglass\, milk paint\, or dye\, these works invite viewers to appreciate the artistic touch that remains on the surface. \nArtists: \nJérôme Blanc; Mike Darlow; Michael De Forest; Giles Gilson; Louise Hibbert; Michael Hosaluk; Michael Hosaluk and Mark Sfirri; Connie Mississippi; Binh Pho\, Greg Wilber and David Williams; Hap Sakwa; Merryll Saylan; Betty Scarpino; David Sengel; Alan Stirt; Derek Weidman; Maria Van Kesteren \nLocation: The Fleur and Charles Bresler Research Library at the Museum for Art in Wood \nRemarks at 6:00 pm \nAmerican Graffiti is generously supported by the Cambium Giving Society of the Museum for Art in Wood\, The Andy Warhol Foundation for the Visual Arts\, The Bresler Foundation\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, Philadelphia Cultural Fund\, and Windgate Foundation. \nPictured above: Merryll Saylan\, North Seas\, 1988. SUMMARY:Along the Tidelines of History: Three Decades of WARP Wood
DESCRIPTION:Along the Tidelines of History: Three Decades of WARP Wood | Thurs. Oct. 23\, 2025 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a gallery talk with the 2025 WARP Wood Scholar Fellow\, Holly Gore. This talk approaches WARP Wood 2025 as belonging to a continuum extending through the three-decades-long duration of the program and further—through Philadelphia’s long history as a city that has supported artists and craftspeople in unique ways. \nAbout Holly Gore \nWhat does it mean to build and who can be a builder? The very language of construction is saturated with moralism: angles are “right” and boards “true.” In artist homes and intentional communities\, the ability to construct one’s own living environment has assumed cosmic dimensions of world-building. Sometimes\, though\, the liberative potential of woodworking is limited by gendered and racialized norms whose deconstruction is overdue. \nAs a writer and curator\, I excavate histories of art\, craft\, and design toward illuminating the present. My recent focus has been on modernism and the work of building—in wood\, metal\, earth\, and stone. During the WARP Wood residency\, I did research in the Museum for Art in Wood archives on the beginnings of the program as a residency for woodturners. In the process\, I found that this turning legacy persists in shaping WARP Wood today\, even as the residency has changed dramatically over its thirty-year lifespan. \nI am based in Chester County\, Pennsylvania\, where I am Director of Interpretation and Associate Curator at the Wharton Esherick Museum. Prior to earning a Ph.D. in art history at the University of California\, Santa Barbara\, I had a first career as a museum cabinetmaker and exhibition designer. Please contact Katie Sorenson\, Director of Outreach and Communications\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org.

SUMMARY:Young Artist Speaker Series: Sterling Cruz-Herr
DESCRIPTION:Young Artist Speaker Series: Sterling Cruz-Herr | Wed. Oct 15\, 2025 | 12:00 – 1:00 pm ET | ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Museum for Art in Wood is proud to present the Young Artist Speaker Series. Each semester\, an artist is invited to share their work and discuss their experiences as an independent artist. The eighth installment in the series features Sterling Cruz-Herr\, an entrepreneur\, teacher\, and artist. Sterling will lead an interactive session to explore how we get paid for our passion by building audiences\, responding to their leads\, and connecting with our peers. Sterling doesn’t claim to know the answers\, but they promise to bring good questions. Don’t miss this lunch hour for the opportunity to learn about Sterling Cruz-Herr’s journey! \nSterling is only young in woodworker years; but they nonetheless are building a business — T4Timbers — with products for the queer/trans community and our allies. What they lack in woodworking experience\, they are trying to offset with communication skills garnered over decades. \n  \n  \nThis event is free to the public. SUMMARY:Drinkers & Thinkers
DESCRIPTION:Drinkers & Thinkers | Thur. Sept 11\, 2025 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm ET | In-person\n*This event has been postponed. We will send an update once a new date has been identified. Thank you for your understanding. \nJoin us for a lively evening discussing cocktails and Cinders: Burned\, Scorched\, and Pyrographed Works in Wood\, the current exhibition on view in the Fleur & Charles Bresler Research Library. Drinkers & Thinkers pairs mixologists with artists\, designers\, makers\, and thinkers in panel- or duet-panel-conversations. Giving mixologists and artists the platform to talk about ways in which their work intersects—inspiration\, problem-solving\, technique\, materials and processes\, and more—encourages deeper thinking about these fields through the sharing of perspectives that may seem incongruous\, but are actually very much aligned. \nFor the first of this new series\, the Museum for Art in Wood welcomes mixologist Jackie Nevin and Assistant Curator\, Amrut Mirsha. Space is limited\, and special custom glass is included with the ticket cost. Reserve your spot today. \n*Must be 21 to attend. \n \n \n \n \n \n About Jackie Nevin \nJackie Nevin is a multidisciplinary creative professional\, based in Philadelphia\, with a background in both arts administration and the food & beverage industry. Jackie currently coordinates the planning and production of exhibitions at the Craft Coven Gallery\, where you can also find her mixing up cocktails for First Friday events. \n \n \n \n \n \n About Miriam Carpenter \nMiriam Carpenter is a contemporary artist based in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania whose work includes wood sculpture\, furniture\, ceramics and works on paper. As a Rhode Island School of Design alumna\, she began her career as a furniture designer at George Nakashima’s studio.
