Through both creating and spotlighting events during the week of the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show\, CraftNOW invites locals and visitors alike to explore Philadelphia’s innovations in the world of the handmade. \nWe believe craft is an important form of expression\, which brings wholeness in people’s lives and enriches communities. Craft can be a convener in a divisive age. SUMMARY:CraftMONTH Dual Tour: FWM + Center for Art in Wood
DESCRIPTION:Click HERE to RSVP \nCelebrate CraftMONTH with this guided tour of two best-in-craft exhibitions at The Fabric Workshop and Museum and The Center for Art in Wood. \nAt FWM\, experience Rose B. Simpson Dream House\, an immersive multi-room installation organized as a journey through the artist’s psyche. Inspired by Pueblo architecture\, her ancestral landscape\, and magical realism\, Simpson explores the imprints and through-lines that connect and orient her life as an artist\, an Indigenous person\, and a mother. Through unique displays of ceramics\, textiles\, sculptures\, paintings\, and Simpson’s first-ever works in video\, the artist invites us to navigate the contours of intimacy\, memory\, and belonging. \nAt The Center for Art in Wood\, discover the vessel as a source of inspiration for artists working in wood. Vessel: Embodiment\, Autonomy\, and Ornament in Wood explores eternal questions of offering and ownership\, concealment\, and emptiness. For millennia\, the idea of the vessel has been used to explain the secrets of the universe. This exhibition\, which includes works from the Center’s permanent collection as well as on loan\, demonstrates the breadth of reflection\, empowerment\, subversion\, and spiritual awareness inspired by the act of containment and the vessel form. \nFWM is located at 1214 Arch Street. After touring Rose B. Simpson: Dream House\, stroll down Arch Street and turn left on N 3rd to reach The Center for Art and Wood at 141 N. 3rd Street. \nThis event is co-organized with CraftNOW in conjunction with CraftMONTH and Rose B. SUMMARY:Exploration\, Experimentation\, Collaboration: 25 Years of the Windgate International Residency Program
DESCRIPTION:Exploration\, Experimentation\, Collaboration: 25 Years of the Windgate International Residency Program | Fri. November 6\, 2020 | 2:55 – 3:40 PM ET | LIVE on ZOOM\nCraftNOW symposium 2020 Cultures of Making takes place 2:00–5:00 PM ET October 30th and November 6thTo register click here \nExploration\, Experimentation\, Collaboration: 25 Years of the Windgate International Residency ProgramA discussion with The Center for Art in Wood’s Artistic Director\, Jennifer-Navva Milliken \nPanelists:Max Brosi\, Ireland—Artist Fellow\, ITE 2017Stefano Catalani\, US—Scholar Fellow\, ITE 2010Vivian Chiu\, US—Artist Fellow\, ITE 2018Betty Scarpino\, US—Artist Fellow\, ITE 1999; Photojournalist Fellow\, ITE 2016 \nModerator:Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Artistic Director of the Center for Art in Wood \nFounded in 1995\, the Windgate International Turning Exchange (ITE) is a uniquely collaborative arts residency program. For two summer months\, artists and researchers from around the world live\, work\, ideate\, and create together in the clamorous center of Philadelphia. Together\, they share knowledge and skill\, but also form lasting bonds that extend beyond the residency. During this tumultuous time\, breakthroughs\, intense bursts of creativity\, material and conceptual experimentations\, and collaborations occur. Significantly\, this singular place-based experience engages a wide community\, beyond the participating fellows—from children enjoying interactive and touchable works in the culminating exhibition of residency work\, to collectors seeking to expand their art holdings.  \nIn the spirit of CraftNOW’s 2020 theme\, Cultures of Making\, the panel discussion\, featuring past fellows of the residency program\, explores the before\, during\, and after experiences sparked by the ITE. It offers a window into this legendary program\, which is now a benchmark for artists seeking to deepen their engagement with the material of wood. The panel accompanies the Center’s concurrent exhibition marking 25 years of the Windgate ITE program. \nTo learn more about Craft Month and the CraftNOW Symposium visit: https://www.craftnowphila.org/symposium/ \nImage: Cristina Tamarez\, Don’t Drop the Log\, 2018
