He has demonstrated his techniques throughout North America and Europe\, as well as Australia and New Zealand. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nSean Kelley has run all public programming at Eastern State Penitentiary since 1995\, when he was hired as the organization’s first full-time employee. He produced the site’s award-winning audio tour in 2002\, now heard by more than a million visitors. During his tenure\, he has overseen the selection of and curated more than 100 site-specific artist installations. \nMr. Kelley is currently focused on developing programming to address the enormous growth in the US prison population since 1970\, and the causes for racial disparities within that population. In 2014 he oversaw the development of a 16-foot\, 1.5 ton bar graph on the penitentiary’s baseball diamond illustrating these trends. Mr. Kelley oversaw the development of a major companion exhibit\, Prisons Today: Questions in the Age of Mass Incarceration which won the 2016 Overall Award for Excellence at the American Alliance of Museums annual competition. \nMr. Kelley visits active prisons and writes critically about prison museums and sites of detention. SUMMARY:Young Artist Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Young Artist Speaker Series | Artist Colin Pezzano | Wed\, March 6\, 2019 | 6 – 8 pm | The Center for Art in Wood\nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present the Young Artist Speaker Series. Each semester a young artist is asked to share their work and speak about the transition from academia to an independent artist. The first in the series will feature artist Colin Pezzano taking place on Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019\, from 6 – 8 pm. \nColin Pezzano is a woodworker based out of Philadelphia\, PA.  Pezzano projects his unique sensibility onto the possibilities of furniture and uses this to offset the domestic environment with pathos and humor. His work is an honest self-searching\, channeling childhood experience and memory to bring beauty to the mundane\, shaping into an object the awkward fumbling form of youth and naivety. The result is something truly unique\, and surprisingly moving; considering the stark\, often minimal approach he takes in design. In these pieces\, in his take on everyday objects\, Pezzano strives to convey a long-lost sense of awe and wonder\,  a chance for a moment to regain a bit of our inner child\, our absent innocence.   He pushes himself in self-discovery\, and in that finds a piece of himself; a piece of all of us. \nColin graduated from University of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received the Windgate Fellowship.  After Graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and was interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first Solo show “Contain You”  at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Since then\, Pezzano has appeared in several shows and galleries including The Smithsonian Craft Show (2016). Following the Smithsonian Craft show\, Colin was inspired to develop a small production line of furniture and objects\, collaborating with other craft artists. In 2018\, Colin had his second Solo show “Still Life with Dead Game”. Pezzano maintains his practice in Philadelphia out of his basement studio and currently is working at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood is a nonprofit arts organization. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nDominique Ellis’ visual practice and research investigates global craft traditions\, architecture\, and history.  Her interdisciplinary practice explores storytelling through oral history\, documentary photography and installations examining urban blight\, social change\, and nostalgia.  Her recent research interests are focused on the economics of craft\, industry\, and family in the past century. \nEllis received her M.F.A. in Printmaking at Tyler School of Art in 2013. A 2017 Curatorial Fellow with the Center for Craft\, she has curated exhibitions for institutions including the Aldrich Contemporary Art Museum\, Arizona State University Art Museum\, the Minnesota Museum of American Art\, and the Woodlands\, a historic site in Philadelphia. Elizabeth serves as a researcher for two forthcoming publications and has written for magazines including Modern and Metalsmith. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nJames Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, and sound art are his analog and digital primes\, His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity\, at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions\, the accompaniment: i\,e\, tools\, and materials\, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know ones’ instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. Jazz is the primer which propels the work\, the tone/feel of every composition is in direct association with the culture. Every object I compose is a physical versioning of a historic recording of happening\, every tool used is an augmented scale referencing an industrial progression. The materials (wood\, metal\, plastic\, film) are the staff paper\, and every committed strike upon these materials forms a note or chord. The fluidity connecting mind\, hand\, and tools are based on the augmented triad which is the cornerstone of my work ethic. The main objective is to continue creating full-bodied compositions\, as long as the staff paper flows\, I will inscribe upon it. \nHis work has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York\, Minneapolis-Saint Paul\, Austin\, Philadelphia\, Cincinnati\, and San Francisco. She was named the 2019 American Craft Council Emerging Voices Awards Scholar and the 2018 Houston Art Alliance Let Creativity Express Grant recipient. She recently completed a Windgate Curatorial Fellowship at Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and a curatorial internship at the Corning Museum of Glass. Darro is a contributor to publications on contemporary craft and decorative arts and has juried international exhibitions. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nPhoto by Stephanie Reyer \nNashay “Nyela” Antoinette Jones is an interdisciplinary artist\, working in paint\, pixels\, and mixed media to tell embodied stories of female-bodied Black people. “This body–my body\,” and others like it–are their frame of reference\, the aperture through which they understand the world. They often use it as metaphor\, wanting not only to tell its stories of pain and heartache\, but also its stories of love\, hope\, and joy. Nashay holds an MFA in Interdisciplinary Art from Goddard College and is currently working towards an MA in Museum Studies from the University of the Arts. \n  \n  \n  \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDonate

The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nKenneth Hilario \nKenneth Hilario: A former staff reporter at the Philadelphia Business Journal\, Kenneth gained first-hand expertise covering the hospitality\, tourism and marketing communications industries. From restaurants and cultural attractions to leisure and international travel\, Kenneth has demonstrated a deep understanding of hospitality industries and their social and economic impact through his reporting. The Philadelphia resident graduated from Temple University with a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? This month we will hear from Cairo-based Ahmed Abdelazim talk about the John Grass Wood Turning Company’s balusters. \nAhmed Abdelazim holds a BA in Architecture\, MA in Islamic Art\, MA in Anthropology (both from the American University in Cairo)\, and a current Ph.D. candidate in Art History at UW-Madison. Abdelazim’s work examines the material and visual culture of Egypt during the second half of the 20th century and is interested in the social life of objects and how discourses develop around them.\n  \n  \n  \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nScott Braun is a visual artist\, educator\, and socio-political activist whose interactive performances\, sculptures\, and installations engage participants in an exploration of self in the context of society. He has been artist-in-residence at Anderson Ranch in Colorado and Haystack in Maine\, and his work has been exhibited in solo and group exhibitions at the Queens Museum\, Sideshow Gallery\, The Rosenthal Library\, Benton/Nyce Gallery\, Pei-Ling Chen Sculpture Garden at Savannah College of Art and Design\, Rye Arts Center gallery\, and the American University Museum. \nHis current endeavor\, “The Decency Project\,” draws upon his extensive background in woodworking and social practice\, using craft and labor as a conduit for creating community. The project has traveled from Richmond\, VA to Washington\, DC\, and New York\, NY\, and is featured in the documentary series “The Line (That Divides Us).” The Decency Project is scheduled to be at the Center for Art in Wood and Love Park in Philadelphia\, PA\, and the Colorado School of Mines in Golden\, CO\, in Fall 2021. \nBraun has worked professionally as musician\, spoken word performer\, furniture designer/maker\, visual artist\, and educator. He has served as Lecturer in Sculpture at Yale School of Art\, Faculty at New York School of Interior Design\, and is currently Assistant Professor in the Craft/Material Studies Department at VCUArts in Richmond\, VA. He holds a BA in Music from Berklee College of Music in Boston\, and an MFA in Studio Art and Social Practice from Queens College\, CUNY in NY. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions?
