SUMMARY:Merryll Saylan: This is Your Life
DESCRIPTION:Merryll Saylan: This is Your Life\nCurated by Glenn Adamson\nNovember 2\, 2018 – January 19\, 2019\nVisit the online gallery here. \nThe Center for Art in Wood is pleased to present the work of renowned wood artist Merryll Saylan in an exhibition celebrating the timeline of her career. When she began turning in the 1970s\, Saylan was one of few women in the craft field. While her contemporaries gravitated toward furniture-making and the use of exotic woods\, Saylan—who came from a background in modern and contemporary design—focused on surface\, using wood as a blank canvas for compositions in color and texture. Her experiments with stains\, pigments\, texture\, and auto body finishes represented a new approach in the field\, with connections to abstract painting. \nGuest Curator Glenn Adamson writes that Saylan’s work draws “sometimes humorously\, sometimes poignantly—from the world of everyday things….her objects dwell right in that interesting space between unremarkable normalcy and aesthetic transcendence\, which we all inhabit all the time.” \n \nEVENTS\nCraftNOW Symposium | Nov 2 | 11 AM – 7 PM | University of the Arts Gershman Hall\, 401 S. Broad St. Free and open to the public. Lecture by Merryll Saylan and Glenn Adamson at 1 PM \nFirst Fridays | Nov 2\, Dec 9\, Jan 4 | 5 – 8 PM. Opening reception on Nov 2 | 6 – 8 PM \nGallery talk with Merryll Saylan and Artistic Director Jennifer-Navva Milliken | Nov 3 | 2 – 4 PM \nWorkshop with Alan Adler\, An Introduction to Color on Wood | Sat\, Dec 1 | 2 – 4:30 PM at the Center\n*Registration opening soon. \nWorkshop with Merryll Saylan\, Woodturning and Surface Treatment | Jan 17 & 18 | 10 AM – 4 PM each day | Dovetail Wood Arts at MaKen North\, 3525 I Street\, Philadelphia\n*Registration opening soon. \nClosing event and gallery talk with viewing of finished pieces from the workshop | Sat\, Jan 19 | 2 – 4 PM at the Center \n  \nTo RSVP for the workshops and for more information please contact Katie Sorenson\, at 215-923-8000 or katie@museumforartinwood.org. Interested in bringing a school group? Please contact Lori Reece at lori@museumforartinwood.org \n  \nThe exhibition program at the Center is generously supported by the Cambium Giving Society of The Center for Art in Wood\, Pennsylvania Council on the Arts\, Philadelphia Cultural Fund\, and Windgate Charitable Foundation. SUMMARY:Introduction to Color on Wood with Alan Adler
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Color\nWho: Artist Alan Adler\nWhat: An Introduction to Color on Wood\nWhen: Saturday\, December 1\, 2018 | 2 – 4:30 pm\nWhere: The Center for Art in Wood | 141 N 3rd Street | Philadelphia\nSkill Level: All Levels\nCost: $35 Members  | $45 Non-Members\nSave on this and future workshops by becoming a member.\n \nJoin us for an afternoon exploring the use of color on wood with artist Alan Adler. This workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Merryll Saylan: This is Your Life; a timeline of her work. Saylan is known for her pioneering use of color and Adler will walk you through various coloration options such as milk paint\, iron paint\, and dyes. Participants will each make a group of swatches that they will take away for their next project. \nAlan Adler first became interested in design when he studied for his MFA at Pratt Institute in New York. Adler took up woodturning in 2009 and has since received awards at regional competitions and international recognition from peers in “The World of Wood Turners.” Adler is also the founder of Source Packaging and Cases by Source\, producing custom packaging for industry clientele. \n From Alan: “For many years I was searching for a material and process to reconnect with my design roots and personal creative expression.  Always drawn to wood and furniture building\, I discovered turning. Nothing measures up to the excitement and discovery of peeling away layers of wood and exposing hidden treasures in grain\, texture\, and color. \nI have been fortunate to have met\, studied and received advice and encouragement from many of the leading artists in this medium. This has inspired me to experiment beyond my comfort zone with color\, carving\, and techniques borrowed from other art forms. \nMajor influences in my work come from studying art history and twentieth-century masters. Observing simple and elegant forms\, textures and patterns and viewing nature have inspired organic relevance that can all be seen throughout my work.” \nThe Center for Art in Wood is a non-profit arts organization located in Philadelphia who nurtures and promotes the innovation of art in wood through collaborative residencies\, exhibitions\, education\, and documentation.  The Center also maintains an inspirational collection and a research library to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the art. \nCancelation Policy\nCancelations of a workshop must be made by email.  The Center can offer a full refund if notice is given 15 days prior to the workshop. Refunds will not be given after that date. \nThe Center for Art in Wood reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to severe weather or unforeseen circumstances. Participants will be notified in advance and offered a full refund. \nFor questions contact Katie Sorenson\, Development and Events Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org or 215-923-8000 ext 103.

He graduated in 1964 from Bluefield State College in West Virginia where he majored in social science and minored in English. A retired social worker\, teacher\, father of five and grandfather of seven\, he is active in several writing groups\, including the Best Day of My Life So Far at the Philadelphia Senior Center. His work can be read in several volumes of the Drexel Writers Room’s Anthology series\, Milestones\, The Best Day of My Life So Far\, and in numerous online and local publications. \nSalvaging the Dormant: On Language by Sarah Grey\nSarah Grey is a freelance writer based in Philadelphia. Her work on topics including politics\, language\, food\, and labor has appeared in Best Food Writing 2015\, Jacobin\, Bitch\, Saveur\, International Socialist Review\, Monthly Review\, Lucky Peach\, and more. Her story is woven with strands of inspiration from friends and family\, helping to form the tapestry of her life. \nSome Old Houses by Lauren Lowe\nLauren Lowe is a Drexel alum (BA English\, ’17). During the 2017-2018 academic year\, she served as an Artist Year fellow and taught creative writing at Paul Robeson High School in West Philadelphia. She is a regular member of Drexel Writers Room and a fervent Sixers fan—both have taught her how to trust the process. \nThe Head & The Hand is a nonprofit\, independent craft publishing company and writers’ workshop based in Philadelphia.\nWe call it “craft” because we consider writers to be artisans\, much like a carpenter or a farmer. And just as a farmer is connected to the crop from the seed to the harvest\, we think that a writer should be connected to the process of crafting a book\, from manuscript submission to the shelf. \nWith business practices influenced by the work ethic of artisans\, we strive to work with authors\, both aspiring and established\, whose work is not confined to a specific style or mindset. Our main goal is to produce writing that shows a connection from the head to the hand by publishing stories that have the power to change and entertain. \nAnd with our Writers’ Workshop\, we are also doing everything we can to help maintain the long legacy of book publishing in Philadelphia\, while also making our own unique contribution to the city’s burgeoning literary community. \nFor more information about The Head and the Hand click HERE. \nFor questions please contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Young Artist Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Young Artist Speaker Series | Artist Colin Pezzano | Wed\, March 6\, 2019 | 6 – 8 pm | The Center for Art in Wood\nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present the Young Artist Speaker Series. Each semester a young artist is asked to share their work and speak about the transition from academia to an independent artist. The first in the series will feature artist Colin Pezzano taking place on Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019\, from 6 – 8 pm. \nColin Pezzano is a woodworker based out of Philadelphia\, PA.  Pezzano projects his unique sensibility onto the possibilities of furniture and uses this to offset the domestic environment with pathos and humor. His work is an honest self-searching\, channeling childhood experience and memory to bring beauty to the mundane\, shaping into an object the awkward fumbling form of youth and naivety. The result is something truly unique\, and surprisingly moving; considering the stark\, often minimal approach he takes in design. In these pieces\, in his take on everyday objects\, Pezzano strives to convey a long-lost sense of awe and wonder\,  a chance for a moment to regain a bit of our inner child\, our absent innocence.   He pushes himself in self-discovery\, and in that finds a piece of himself; a piece of all of us. \nColin graduated from University of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received the Windgate Fellowship.  After Graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and was interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first Solo show “Contain You”  at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Since then\, Pezzano has appeared in several shows and galleries including The Smithsonian Craft Show (2016). Following the Smithsonian Craft show\, Colin was inspired to develop a small production line of furniture and objects\, collaborating with other craft artists. In 2018\, Colin had his second Solo show “Still Life with Dead Game”. Pezzano maintains his practice in Philadelphia out of his basement studio and currently is working at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood is a nonprofit arts organization. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nFor question please contact Community Engagement Manager Katie Sorenson at katie@museumforartinwood.org.

SUMMARY:Object Lesson: James Maurelle
DESCRIPTION:Object Lesson |  James Maurelle\, artist and lecturer at Penn | Fri. Nov. 1\, 2019 | 7 – 7:30 pm | The Center for Art in Wood Museum Collection\nFREE\nObject Lesson is a monthly First Friday speaker series that will open wide the cases of the Center’s Museum Collection through the perspectives of individuals from the worlds of art\, design\, performance\, community activism\, education\, and more\, creating fresh dialogues about the Collection and its objects. The series invites the public for an up-close and personal experience in an informal\, discursive setting that will encourage exploration of the many treasures in the Collection. \nJames Maurelle is an interdisciplinary artist\, sculpture\, video\, photography\, and sound art are his analog and digital primes\, His work investigates the correlation formed between labor and creativity\, at the center of this byway is the spirit of his work. Constructing objects and moving images are not unlike creating music compositions\, the accompaniment: i\,e\, tools\, and materials\, are a call and response to dexterity. The rubric to complete any composition is to know ones’ instrument(s)/tools; the creative process is based on this reciprocal understanding. Jazz is the primer which propels the work\, the tone/feel of every composition is in direct association with the culture. Every object I compose is a physical versioning of a historic recording of happening\, every tool used is an augmented scale referencing an industrial progression. The materials (wood\, metal\, plastic\, film) are the staff paper\, and every committed strike upon these materials forms a note or chord. The fluidity connecting mind\, hand\, and tools are based on the augmented triad which is the cornerstone of my work ethic. The main objective is to continue creating full-bodied compositions\, as long as the staff paper flows\, I will inscribe upon it. \nHis work has shown in solo and group exhibitions in New York\, Minneapolis-Saint Paul\, Austin\, Philadelphia\, Cincinnati\, and San Francisco. He is a recipient of the Skowhegan School of Painting and Sculpture Fellowship (2015). \n  \nObject Lesson Schedule: \nDecember 6\, 2019 – Aisha Zia Khan\, Executive Director of Twelve Gates Arts \n
