SUMMARY:Introduction to Color on Wood with Alan Adler
DESCRIPTION:Introduction to Color\nWho: Artist Alan Adler\nWhat: An Introduction to Color on Wood\nWhen: Saturday\, December 1\, 2018 | 2 – 4:30 pm\nWhere: The Center for Art in Wood | 141 N 3rd Street | Philadelphia\nSkill Level: All Levels\nCost: $35 Members  | $45 Non-Members\nSave on this and future workshops by becoming a member.\n \nJoin us for an afternoon exploring the use of color on wood with artist Alan Adler. This workshop is offered in conjunction with the exhibition Merryll Saylan: This is Your Life; a timeline of her work. Saylan is known for her pioneering use of color and Adler will walk you through various coloration options such as milk paint\, iron paint\, and dyes. Participants will each make a group of swatches that they will take away for their next project. \nAlan Adler first became interested in design when he studied for his MFA at Pratt Institute in New York. Adler took up woodturning in 2009 and has since received awards at regional competitions and international recognition from peers in “The World of Wood Turners.” Adler is also the founder of Source Packaging and Cases by Source\, producing custom packaging for industry clientele. \n From Alan: “For many years I was searching for a material and process to reconnect with my design roots and personal creative expression.  Always drawn to wood and furniture building\, I discovered turning. Nothing measures up to the excitement and discovery of peeling away layers of wood and exposing hidden treasures in grain\, texture\, and color. \nI have been fortunate to have met\, studied and received advice and encouragement from many of the leading artists in this medium. This has inspired me to experiment beyond my comfort zone with color\, carving\, and techniques borrowed from other art forms. \nMajor influences in my work come from studying art history and twentieth-century masters. Observing simple and elegant forms\, textures and patterns and viewing nature have inspired organic relevance that can all be seen throughout my work.” \nThe Center for Art in Wood is a non-profit arts organization located in Philadelphia who nurtures and promotes the innovation of art in wood through collaborative residencies\, exhibitions\, education\, and documentation.  The Center also maintains an inspirational collection and a research library to enhance the understanding and appreciation of the art. \nCancelation Policy\nCancelations of a workshop must be made by email.  The Center can offer a full refund if notice is given 15 days prior to the workshop. Refunds will not be given after that date. \nThe Center for Art in Wood reserves the right to cancel a workshop due to severe weather or unforeseen circumstances. Participants will be notified in advance and offered a full refund. \nFor questions contact Katie Sorenson\, Development and Events Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org or 215-923-8000 ext 103.
