The residency is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia who work in the medium of wood and is a collaboration between the Museum for Art in Wood and NextFab. An exhibition of the work created over the two-month-long program will be presented at NextFab. \nABOUT LIN ELKINS \nLin is an artist\, furniture maker\, and craftswoman based in Philadelphia\, PA. Lin holds a BS in Furniture Design from Appalachian State University. Post graduate\, Lin has been a Fellow at UNC Asheville\, a craft education intern at North House Folk School\, the Staff Fellow and Media Coordinator at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. She also has assisted and led education courses at a variety of institutions\, including Penland School of Craft and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. \nShe is driven by the dichotomy between the natural and the built environment and how that tension affects the spiritual and physical connection we have to ourselves and the world around us. She explores this through purposeful functionality\, playfulness\, and art\, creating opportunities for moments of comfort\, wonder\, and curiosity. \nABOUT NEXTFAB \n\nNextFab is a network of membership-based makerspaces that provide access to tools\, technology\, education\, events\, and services for makers and creatives. They offer a variety of education and startup programs\, as well as professional design\, production\, and placemaking services for whatever your fabrication needs. \nABOUT THE MUSEUM FOR ART IN WOOD \nThe Museum for Art in Wood is a museum of contemporary art\, craft\, and design in the material of wood. Fitzgerald. During the event\, Fitzgerald will present his experience with artist Tommy Simpson while preparing the publication. \nCopies of the book will be available for purchase at the event\, along with plenty of opportunities for conversation. \nAbout Oscar P. Fitzgerald \n Dr. Fitgerald has lectured worldwide including presentations to appraisers\, collectors\, museums\, and even several Atlantic Ocean crossings on Queen Elizabeth II. His books include American Furniture: 1650 to the Present (600 pages\, 800 illustrations)\, the standard text book in the field; the catalogue of studio furniture in the Smithsonian’s Renwick collection; and American Furniture Designers: 1900-2020\, published by Rowman Littlefield in 2022. His latest book\, The Art and Furniture of Tommy Simpson was published by Bloomsbury in January. These two exhibitions\, Viola Bordon: Muliebrity and BA Harington: Suite Américaine\, are a part of Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by The Clay Studio and a consortium of Philadelphia’s extensive collection of arts and cultural institutions that celebrate how today’s artists are continuing the city’s unique and rich legacy as a center for creativity and civic engagement. To learn more about the other participating artists and organizations\, please click HERE. \nAbout the Artist:\nSince 2012\, BA Harrington has been a Professor of Woodworking in the Department of Art and Design and Director of the Wood Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She continues to write essays\, speak at conferences\, and build sculptural work in reference to early American furniture forms. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Each year this substantial mid-career grant is awarded to two artists who are revising\, reclaiming\, and advancing the history of craft through their work. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nViola Bordon is an artist and educator based in Philadelphia whose work examines transformation across material\, ecological\, and social systems. Her quilting is an act that binds histories of labor\, belief\, and resistance. Working through inherited methods of reuse and repair\, she frames systems of power that shape both personal and collective experience. Her quilts negotiate structures that hold tension between faith and skepticism\, memory and material. Quiet repetitive labor forming articulated dissent\, allowing form itself to think through what endurance makes visible. Her practice also includes environmental installations\, drawing on methods of reuse\, endurance\, and collaboration. Her projects have been supported by the Fulbright Commission\, Lilly Endowment\, Sachs Program for Arts Innovation\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and Salt Planes State Park. April 29\, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:30 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE for TICKETS \nFollowing the release of his second graphic novel\, Umbra\, this past fall\, artist Colin Pezzano presents both Umbra and his debut Soma in a unique multimedia experience—featuring animations by Ricky Christian set to live musical scores for each work. Join us for this unique experience of art\, music\, and horror. \nColin Pezzano will have books\, records\, and posters available for sale and to sign after the performance. \nDoors open at 6:30\, music at 7:00 pm. \nSoma is a graphic novel told in forty-five woodcuts carved during the winter of 2022. A mundane horror processing the physical body and navigating domestic spaces. The narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. \nUmbra is a graphic novel composed of seventy woodcut prints that follows a dog walk through South Philadelphia in 2020. Wander the spaces where the familiar begins to empty out—where everyday environments shift toward estrangement\, absence\, or memorial. The two-month Residency culminates in an exhibition that is currently on view at NextFab. Going Up by Lin Elkins explores the various ways humans try to make sense of an unpredictable world. Games\, simple machines\, and small acts of participation become tools for thinking about fate\, progress\, and the desire to control what surrounds us. \nGoing Up is on view now through May 21\, 2026

The discussion will focus on the current exhibition\, Dan Gunn: American Interior\, between the artist and Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Museum for Art in Wood. \nAmerican Interior marks Dan Gunn’s first solo exhibition at Pentimenti and features intricately carved wooden “tapestries” that invite viewers to look beyond the surface. Gunn meticulously hand-cuts\, carves\, dyes\, and paints plywood segments\, which he sews together with nylon cord to evoke the appearance of hanging fabric. \nThis in-depth conversation\, held at Pentimenti Gallery\, offers an intimate look into Gunn’s creative process. He received his MFA in Painting from the School of the Art Institute of Chicago in 2007\, where he is currently an Adjunct Assistant Professor teaching remotely. His work engages ideas of material transformation\, regional identity\, and the aesthetics of craft traditions. \nHis work is held in the collections of the Mayo Clinic (Minneapolis)\, KMAC Contemporary (Louisville)\, TD Bank (New York)\, DePaul University School of Music\, Fidelity Investments (Chicago)\, the Joyce Foundation (Chicago)\, and the Marciano Art Foundation (Los Angeles)\, among others. \n  \nAbout Jennifer-Navva Milliken \nJennifer-Navva Milliken is the Executive Director and Chief Curator of the Museum for Art in Wood. In this workshop you will shape a spoon’s curvy contours with two traditional Swedish carving tools\, the Sloyd knife and the hook knife. We will work with precut green wood spoon blanks that are supple with the moisture from the tree they came from. Safe practices and effective wood removal will be taught in a series of knife moves that will be practiced with body awareness. Come participate in this satisfying hand craft of whittling wood with others. \n  \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				ABOUT KATE HAWES \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Kate Hawes is a woodworker based in Woodstock\, New York whose work includes furniture\, carved spoons\, and wooden wares for the home. They are an educator who enjoys sharing their skill and passion with others. In 2024\, they founded The Ulster Spoon Jam\, a community spoon carving event. They have taught classes in woodworking at the Makeville Studio\, Peters Valley School of Craft\, the American Folk Art Museum\, SUNY Purchase\, North Bennet Street School\, Haystack\, Snowfarm\, Cottage Courses\, and the Hudson River Maritime Museum and Boat School. They completed a certificate in cabinet and furniture making from the North Bennet Street School and a Masters in Critical Craft Studies from Warren Wilson College. \n			\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				ABOUT QUEERING WOOD CRAFT \nIn 2021\, the Museum launched an international\, artist-led roundtable for LGBTQIA+ woodworkers to foster discussion about the intersection of queer identity and woodworking. The initiative aims to address a lack of research in the field while increasing visibility and community for marginalized queer artists working with the material of wood. This workshop is the first of many auxiliary programs leading up to the Queering Wood Craft\, a landmark exhibition\, highlighting LGBTQIA+ woodworking artists. The culmination of this project will be a 3-month exhibition—the first and largest of its kind—opening in May 2027. \nQuestions? A graduate of Temple University\, she currently serves as a school-based teacher leader and spoken word poetry teacher at the Academy at Palumbo High School. Cait is also the co-director of Philly Slam League\, a non-profit organization dedicated to helping young people discover the power of their voices through weekly spoken word poetry competitions. She lives in Philadelphia with her husband Matthew and her daughters Adia Sherrill and Bennu Jane. Her first book is More Than a Slam: A Guide to Teaching Spoken Word Poetry in the Secondary Classroom.\n

The exhibition is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s feminist classic\, A Room of One’s Own (1928)\, and invites us to consider how we pursue contemplative and creative work. Space is limited. This event will take place at NextFab\, located at 1800 North American Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19122\, on Saturday\, July 11\, 2026\, from 10:00 am to 1:00 pm. This event is an opportunity to meet the resident fellows and hear about their concepts and works in progress\, whether in wood\, film\, writing\, or other documentation. \nThis summer marks the 29th year that the Museum has sponsored the international residency program. The Fellows live\, travel\, and work independently and collaboratively in an intensive\, 8-week program from June 8 through August 7\, 2026. Don’t miss this special evening of music and art coming together. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm\nMusic from 7:00 to 8:00 pm \nAbout MacBuck \nOriginating as the solo project of guitarist and songwriter Ingrid Buckley\, MacBuck grew into an indie rock trio in 2021\, currently with the additions of Salina Kuo (St. John’s Wort\, River Full of Fruit) and Thomas Hagan (Sargasso\, The Lunar Calendar).\n\nFrom the earliest recordings based out of their hometown in Southeast Ohio\, to the DIY venues of Philly\, MacBuck finds inspiration in both the unexpected and the mundane of city living. July 23\, 2026 | 6:00 – 9:00 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for an exploratory writing workshop inspired by the Museum’s current exhibitions\, led by Artist Dagmawe Berhanu. Berhanu will guide participants through writing prompts that reflect on the spaces\, objects\, rituals\, and relationships that make room for their own creative lives. The day will begin with a tour of the exhibitions BA Harrington: Suite Américaine\, Viola Bordon: Muliebrity\, and A Room of Their Own: Still-Life Sculpture and the Creative Interior. The research library\, where A Room of Their Own is on view\, will be the workshop’s main focus. The exhibition is inspired by Virginia Woolf’s feminist classic\, A Room of One’s Own (1928)\, and invites us to consider how we pursue contemplative and creative work. Space is limited. Please join us for this enlightening writing workshop. \nABOUT DAGMAWE BERHANU \n \nDagmawe Berhanu (they/them) is an Ethiopian-American poet and organizer whose work explores memory and grief\, across both emotional and physical landscapes. Drawing from personal narrative and community-centered practice\, their work often engages questions of care\, identity\, and resilience. \nAs a facilitator\, Dagmawe is committed to creating thoughtful\, accessible spaces that invite participants to reflect\, share\, and connect through creative practice. DESCRIPTION:Furniture\, History and Feminism: a Suite Américaine Panel Discussion | Fri. July 24\, 2026 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a panel discussion exploring the history of American furniture making through objects created for women from the late seventeenth to the early nineteenth century. Using furniture as a lens to examine gender\, labor\, and artistic expression\, the conversation will consider how domestic objects reflected and shaped women’s roles in early America. \nThe discussion centers on three furniture forms that inspired the exhibition BA Harrington: Suite Américanine: dower chests\, writing desks\, and sewing tables. Each of these objects occupied a distinct place in a woman’s life. Dower chests safeguarded textiles\, clothing\, and household goods that accompanied a woman into marriage; writing desks provided a space for correspondence\, record-keeping\, and intellectual engagement; and sewing tables supported the textile work expected of women and often served as a measure of domestic skill and accomplishment. Together\, these forms reveal the complex ways furniture functioned not only as utilitarian objects but also as markers of identity\, status\, education\, and gender expectations. \nPanelists will examine the cultural significance and craftsmanship of these furnishings\, considering the woodworkers who designed and built them\, the social customs that informed their use\, and the women whose daily lives were intertwined with them. The conversation will also explore the paradox embedded within these objects: although they were frequently commissioned\, designed\, and constructed by men\, they were created to organize\, contain\, and sometimes conceal the labor\, creativity\, and personal worlds of women. \nThrough a feminist lens\, the panel will connect these historical forms to BA Harrington’s contemporary practice. Historically designed and built by men\, these furnishings often concealed women’s labor and creativity. In Suite Américanine\, Harrington transforms them into structures that reveal rather than hide textile work\, bringing women’s craftsmanship to the forefront and inviting viewers to reconsider whose labor and stories have been valued. \nBringing together perspectives from history\, material culture\, and contemporary practice\, this conversation offers an opportunity to reflect on the enduring relationship between furniture\, gender\, and creative expression across centuries of American history. \n  \nPanelists: \nJustina Barrett\nJustina Barrett serves as the Chief Learning and Engagement Officer at the Historical Society of Pennsylvania\, one of the nation’s largest archives of historical documents\, founded in 1824. In this role\, she oversees all public programming\, K-12 educational activities\, and external engagement efforts\, including communications and partnerships. She works to showcase and make accessible HSP’s collection of over 23 million manuscripts\, books\, and graphic images. She brings to her role over two decades of museum education experience in art museums and historic houses. Justina earned a bachelor’s degree in history with teaching certification from Bryn Mawr College and a master’s degree in early American material culture from the Winterthur Program at the University of Delaware. \nBA Harrington\nSince 2012\, Harrington has been a Professor of Woodworking in the Department of Art and Design\, and Director of the Wood Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She continues to write essays\, speak at conferences\, and build sculptural work in reference to early American furniture forms. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Each year this substantial mid-career grant is awarded to two artists who are revising\, reclaiming\, and advancing the history of craft through their work. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \nChristopher Storb\nChristopher Storb is a furniture conservator\, woodworking historian\, and instructor of joinery\, woodturning\, and woodcarving.
