SUMMARY:A Sense of Balance: The Sculpture of Stoney Lamar
DESCRIPTION:First Fridays | February 6\, March 6\, Apr 3 | 5:00 – 8:00 | ADMISSION IS FREE \nTour of Snyderman-Works Galleries\, 303 Cherry St\, Philadelphia\, followed by a gallery talk and reception with Stoney Lamar\, Curator Andrew Glasgow\, and studio artist and writer\, Bruce Metcalf\, at the Center | Saturday\, Mar 7\, 2015 | 2:00 – 4:00 | ADMISSION IS FREE\, Registration required.  Please email maggie@museumforartinwood.org. \nWilliam Stoney Lamar (1951 – ) has contributed exceptional skill and vision to the world of wood turning for over 25 years. Lamar attended the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for a short period before leaving and working as a conscientious objector to the Vietnam War for two years. He later attended the University of North Carolina at Asheville followed by Appalachian State University\, where he graduated in 1979 with a B.S. in Industrial Arts. It was not until the mid-1980s that Lamar began to work on a lathe and fully explore its utility in realizing his own artistry. \nStoney Lamar’s sculpture is created primarily through a unique approach to multi-axial lathe work\, giving his pieces a distinct sense of line and movement unlike other works of turned wood. Often letting the shape\, color and modeling of the wood determine a piece’s finished appearance\, Lamar also employs paint and metal in his forms. The artist continues to create\, and his work can be found in both private and public collections around the country. Lamar has used his knowledge in his field to teach and lecture\, and has served on the boards of the American Craft Council\, the Center for Craft\, Creativity & Design\, and of the Southern Highland Craft Guild. He is also a founder of the Association of American Woodturners. \nAndrew Glasgow is the retired Executive Director of the American Craft Council. An Alabama native\, Mr. Glasgow received an Art History degree from the University of Alabama at Birmingham. After three years as Assistant Curator of Decorative Arts at the Birmingham Museum of Art\, Mr. Glasgow joined the Southern Highland Craft Guild in Asheville as the Curator of Education. Four years later\, he became the Assistant Director of Blue Spiral 1\, a gallery that focuses on the arts and crafts of the South. He returned to the Southern Highland Craft Guild as Director of Programs and Collections before being named Executive Director of The Furniture Society in 2000. IN 2007 Mr. Glasgow was hired as Executive Director of the American Craft Council\, then in NYC. He retired due to a long term illness in 2009. \nThe Penland School of Crafts recently created the Andrew Glasgow Writers’ Residency\, which provides time for writers\, scholars\, and curators to work on topics designed to advance the field of crafts. He lives in Asheville\, North Carolina. \nBruce Metcalf is a studio jeweler and writer from the Philadelphia area. He received a B.F.A. from Syracuse University in 1971\, and an M.F.A. from Tyler School of Art in 1977. Since then he has taught at Kent State University\, the University of the Arts in Philadelphia\, and several other schools. He has written extensively about issues in contemporary craft in numerous domestic and foreign publications\, and is co-author with Janet Koplos of Makers: A History of American Studio Craft. Metcalf’s jewelry\, sculpture and drawings have been included in hundreds of national and international exhibitions in the past 44 years. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Dorothy Gill Barnes & Dona Look: Beyond the Trees
DESCRIPTION:(This exhibition runs concurrently with the Wendy Maryuma: The wildLIFE Project exhibition.) \nThe Center presents provocative works by three artists in the Gerry Lenfest Gallery.  Wendy Maruyama: The wildLIFE Project addresses poaching and the illegal ivory trade which has all but decimated the elephant and exemplifies the artist’s shift beyond traditional studio craft and education\, to advocacy.  Elephants are memorialized in monumental form with sculpted heads ranging from 8 to 12 feet in height\, and shrine-like cabinet forms.  All create layers of sensory experience for the viewer as does the use of video\, incense and a bronze bell – set to ring throughout the day. \nWendy Maruyama: The WildLIFE Project is organized by Houston Center for Contemporary Craft and curated by Elizabeth Kozlowski. The exhibition is made possible through generous support by the Windgate Charitable Foundation. \nWildLIFE is complemented by installations from two other renowned artists who work closely with salvaged trees and bark. Dorothy Gill Barnes manipulates the limbs and bark of trees during their growth cycle. In exciting new work\, Dorothy utilizes glass and tree elements to create large scale\, suspended necklace forms. In contrast\, Dona Look weaves and sews white birch bark with silk thread into elegant\, sleek vessel forms. Click here for the Beyond the Trees online gallery. \nEVENTS \nReception with Wendy Maruyama and Dorothy Gill Barnes | Thursday\, March 3\, 2016 | 6 – 7:30 PM \nFirst Fridays | Feb 5\, March 4*\, April 1\, 2016 | 5 – 8 PM                                                                                                                \n*Meet artists Wendy Maruyama and Dorothy Gill Barnes  at the March 4 First Friday \nGallery talk with Wendy Maruyama and Dorothy Gill Barnes Saturday\, March 5\, 2016 | 2 – 4:30 PM | followed by dinner with the artists\, trustees and supporters. \nQuestions about our events? In recent years the programming has blended artist presentations with panel discussions on contemporary topics relevant to the studio furniture community and the conference theme.  Presentations range greatly from technique driven topics to highlighting individual practices\, such as historical or contemporary makers important to the studio furniture field and emerging makers presenting their talented approaches to studio design/build practices. \nIn conjunction with the Furniture Society: \nWorkshop: Seven at the Center: the 2016 Windgate ITE Fellows Collaboration Laboratory\, Thursday\, June 23\, 10:15AM-5:00PMFellows: Amy Forsyth\, Ashley Eriksmoen\, Betty Scarpino\, Katie Hudnall\, Merryll Saylan\, Michaela Crie Stone\, Nucharin Wangphongsawasd; at UArts\, Room J-COS1. The seven Windgate ITE Fellows awarded residencies by The Center for Art in Wood each have a variety of skills and techniques that they employ in their work. They will be sharing these with one another and with visitors to their studio. \nPresentation: 1600-2000 Philadelphia Furniture\, Thursday\, June 23\,11:30AM-12:15PM\nSpeaker: Josh Lane; at CBS Auditorium\nFrom its founding in 1682\, Philadelphia has been a center of furniture innovation\, particularly chairmaking. SUMMARY:CALL FOR ENTRIES--SMALL FAVORS: THINK INSIDE THE BOX
DESCRIPTION:[Photo above: Derek Reeverts\, Buying the Farm\, Earthenware\, mixed media\, 2016\, and (right) Katie Susko\, Bud Vase\, 2016\, from The Clay Studio’s Small Favors submissions]\nThe Center for Art in Wood is happy to announce our collaboration with The Clay Studio\, Philadelphia\, for our Len Scherock Museum Store Exhibition–SMALL FAVORS: THINK INSIDE THE BOX\nSMALL FAVORS: THINK INSIDE THE BOX engages artists’ creativity in new and exciting ways with the challenge of making pieces on a very small scale. For some artists\, the work they create is similar to what they normally make but at a reduced scale. Others use it as an opportunity to break away from what they create in their daily studio practice. Regardless of this choice\, the works exhibited are incredibly varied in material\, form\, and aesthetics. Though small in scale the artworks created for this exhibition are huge in impact. Each work is exhibited in a four-inch plexiglass wall mounted cube. SMALL FAVORS: THINK INSIDE THE BOX will be on view from March 3 – May 27\, 2017 \nConceived of in 2006 by The Clay Studio\, SMALL FAVORS: THINK INSIDE THE BOX grew out The Clay Studio’s efforts to offer accessible\, high-quality artworks that appeal to art enthusiasts of all ages: for seasoned collectors who are challenged for space it allows them to continue to collect work by artists they love. For young art collectors it provides a financially accessible entry point. \nIt is our hope that offering a juried and invitational exhibition of this kind brings to light new and established makers and broadens the audience we reach through the display of these unique works of art. SUMMARY:Wood\, Revisited
DESCRIPTION:Wood\, Revisited examines the role technology has played in the work of wood artists over the past two decades. This exhibition highlights the nature of wood as a medium by investigating the boundaries of technique such as new technologies\, augmented tool(s)\, and creating work that has a digital or technological look (“tech aesthetic”) and the dialogue between designer\, engineer\, and artist. Wood\, Revisited\, is curated by Anne Carlisle\, with advisor Glenn Adamson\, who was a curator of the Center’s Wood Turning in North America Since 1930 which was held 15 years ago. That exhibition was a national touring exhibition organized with the Yale University Art Gallery and was the first show to comprehensively map directions in the field of lathe-turned wood. Wood\, Revisited is echoing that exhibition in manifold ways. At that time\, Glenn Adamson was a Yale graduate student. Anne Carlisle\, like Glenn is a graduate student and is working on her a MA at the Bard Graduate Center. \nPARTICIPATING ARTISTS AND STUDIOS: Ahmed ElHusseiny\, AE Superlab; A.
