SUMMARY:#GIVINGTUESDAY
DESCRIPTION:This #GivingTuesday\, help foster the future of artists who work in wood by supporting The Center for Art in Wood’s Student Artist Fellow for the 2017 Windgate ITE International Residency Program. Our goal is to raise $5\,000 to fund this very special student experience. \nThis past summer marked the 21st year for the Windgate ITE International Residency and the 30th year for the Center as a nonprofit. In recognition of these two milestones we established the position for a student to participate as a Windgate ITE Resident Fellow\, working side by side with five mid-career/emerging artists\, a scholar and a photojournalist. \nShow your support by donating now and join in the movement by posting on the Center’s page an #unselfie sharing what inspires you! \nHear how our first student artist\, Rebecca Kolodziejczak\, felt about her experience as a Fellow during our 2016 Windgate ITE International Residency by clicking here.* \n*excerpted from John Thornton’s full video of the allTURNatives: FORM + SPIRIT 2016 exhibition.

SUMMARY:Small Favors: Think Inside the Box
DESCRIPTION:The Center for Art in Wood\, in collaboration with The Clay Studio\, presents Small Favors: Think Inside the Box\, which will be on view on the Center’s Len Scherock Museum Store Art Wall and in the Korman Gallery at The Clay Studio. The exhibition engages new and established artists\, challenging them to produce work using varied materials that fit inside a 4-inch acrylic cube. In 2006\, The Clay Studio conceived the Small Favors exhibition as an effort to advance fine craft to the entry-level collector in addition to seasoned collectors. Over the past decade\, thousands of artists have participated\, responding to the boundaries of the contained space and the opportunity to create small scale sculpture. \nOPENING RECEPTION | First Friday | Friday\, March 3\, 2017 | 5:30–8pm | Progressive event at The Center for Art in Wood and The Clay Studio \nFirst Friday | Friday\, April 7\, 2017 | 5–8pm | At The Center for Art in Wood \nSpring Fling Reception | First Friday | Friday\, May 5\, 2017 | 5–8pm | Progressive event at The Center for Art in Wood and The Clay Studio \nThe Center’s ARTISTS: Ally Crow Linda Ferber Ron Fleming\nAmy Forsyth Dewey Garrett Brooke Hine\nSarah Martin Stephanie Osser Keunho Peter Park\nDavid Plemons Lucinda Rawe Judith Rosenthal\nRandall Rosenthal Joshua Salesin Andrew Sartorius\nNorm Sartorius Jon Sauer Merryll Saylan\nJason Schneider Kimberly Winkle \nThe Clay Studio ARTISTS: Maria Albornoz Lisa Belsky Lynne Berman\nAnn Chahbandour Matthew Courtney Chad Curtis\nDominique Ellis Janet Felton Marguerita Hagan\nStuart Gair Vicky Gold Lois Harvey Darien Johnson\nJennifer Johnson Yu-Jung Kim Lauren Mabry\nDiane Marimow Didem Mert Susan Strassberg\nKatherine Teesdale And Many More \nPictured (left to right\, top to bottom): Judith Rosenthal\, A Walk in the Wood\, 2016 | Norm and Andrew Sartorius\, \nFather and Son Triangle\, 2017 | Chad Curtis\, Green Horizon 002\, 2016 | Stuart Gair\, Soda Fired Espresso Cup\, 2016 | \nJoshua Salesin\, Mandala Cup\, 2017 | Brooke Hine\, Hine Flower\, 2017 | Lauren Mabry\, Enclosed Cylinde\, 2016 | \nDidem Mert\, Chocolate Sprinkle Pinky Winky Brooch\, 2016

SUMMARY:CRISS CROSS: Robyn Horn / Brian Dickerson
DESCRIPTION:CRISS CROSS: ROBYN HORN / BRIAN DICKERSON\nOctober 27\, 2017 – January 18\, 2018\nCurated by Miriam Seidel\nVisit online gallery here. The Center for Art in Wood located at 141 N 3rd Street\, Philadelphia\, PA 19106 is pleased to present CRISS CROSS: Robyn Horn / Brian Dickerson curated by Miriam Seidel. Join us October 27th\, in the Gerry Lenfest Gallery for an exhibition that expands our understanding of wood as an art medium. \nTwo artists working in different ways—Robyn Horn\, with strongly sculptural pieces incorporating the natural heft and gestures of wood\, and Brian Dickerson\, whose constructed paintings build up paint on joined wood surfaces—enter an artistic conversation in this exhibition. Horn’s explorations of painting and Dickerson’s move toward full sculptural forms mirror and illuminate each other’s practice\, stimulating how we look at the possibilities of wood informed by volume and color. \nThe Center for Art in Wood\, known for its new approaches to wood as a material for art\, is the perfect venue for an exhibition that juxtaposes the works of Horn and Dickerson and provokes fresh dialogue relating to the intersections of sculpture and painting\, craft and fine art\, painted versus natural surfaces\, illusionary depth versus actual depth. \nCRISS CROSS: ROBYN HORN / BRIAN DICKERSON at The Center for Art in Wood is sponsored by the Collectors of Wood Art and is part of CraftNOW Philadelphia\, which unites the leading institutions and artists of Philadelphia’s craft community in a celebration of the city’s rich legacy of craft\, its internationally-recognized contemporary craft scene\, and its important role as an incubator for arts based in wood\, clay\, fiber\, metal and glass. \nPictured: Robyn Horn\, US\, Throwing Shadows\, 2010\, Spalted maple\, acrylics\, charcoal\, 27 ½” x 23” x4 ½”\, Photo by artist; Brian Dickerson\, US\, Autumn’s End I\, 2010\, Oil\, wax and mixed media on wood\, 31” x 21” x5”\, Photo by Simone Associates \nRelated events\nFirst Fridays | Nov 3 & Dec 1\, 2017 & Jan 5\, 2018 | 5–8 PM at the Center |\nGallery talk and reception with artist Brian Dickerson and curator Miriam Seidel\nat the Dec 1 event.

SUMMARY:Love Stories: Adapted and Performed by Denise McCormack
DESCRIPTION:Love Stories | Master Storyteller Denise McCormack | Sept 13\, 2018 | 7 – 8 pm | At The Center for Art in Wood | Fringe Festival\nMaster storyteller Denise McCormack brings to life literary and traditional tales to capture the essence of women’s issues and issues of the heart. This one-woman stand-up sparks a flood of emotions and memories\, as it revisits secret and soulful nuances of motherhood\, childhood\, family\, and life—the dynamics of love. Intended for adults. \nPay What You Wish / 60 minutes\nFor tickets click HERE. \nJoin Master Storyteller Denise McCormack for her one-woman show Love Stories\, carefully crafted tales that explore the human condition through the power of story. Each vignette highlights the dynamic nature of relationships and reflects the emotional turmoil that is interwoven in the choices and circumstances of our being\, especially those related to women’s issues\, of motherhood and family. These are not romantic stories; they are stories of our deepest natures and souls. They are stories that connect us and allow us to see into one anothers’ lives for understanding and empathy\, for validation.” McCormack’s soulful performance of Love Stories premiered during Philly Theatre Week to rave reviews and has since been featured at various local and national venues. According to Katie Sorenson\, development and events manager at The Center for Art in Wood\, Denise McCormack approaches each story in detail\, breathing life into them in such a way that captivates the audience. It is a wonderfully unique experience\, and we highly recommend attending one of Denise McCormack’s performances.
