This dynamic group will come together to discuss the many industrial uses of flax fiber\, scaling production in the mid-Atlantic\, and flax as an alternative to toxic building materials and textiles. There will be an array of samples from linseed oil to linen for participants to handle and learn about. \nThis interactive event is an exciting peek into the progress of the fiber flax industry in our region. We welcome interior designers\, architects\, textile industry professionals\, artists\, building contractors\, sustainable developers\, and community members passionate about real change towards a sustainable future. \n\n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Common Object Studio: \n \nWe Are Fernando Ramirez & Justin Beitzel \nCo-founders\, designers\, and explorers of Common Object Studio. At our core\, we are industrial designers\, but our diverse backgrounds in environmental design (Fernando) and engineering (Justin) drive us to think beyond the traditional process. \nWe are passionate about helping companies take steps toward sustainable solutions that consider both people and the planet\, all while injecting fun along the way. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About PA Flax Project: \n\n\n\n\n\nPA Flax Project is organizing farmers\, creating infrastructure for processing\, and making American linen possible again.\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nFiber Flax is a resilient plant that requires little to no chemical inputs or irrigation\, fits well into grain rotations\, remediates soil\, and has a proven history of growing well in Pennsylvania. Flax’s most valuable use is for linen production. Demand for linen grows as consumers turn away from synthetics and demand natural fibers. Flax can also be used in dozens of other products\, making it a versatile and high-value crop. Flax has the potential to provide new revenue streams for hundreds of farmers in Pennsylvania alone. \n\n\n\n\nBut in order to become linen and other products\, flax must be processed. There used to be a significant textile industry in PA\, but the equipment and infrastructure are long gone. The United States has ample space for growing flax\, but we lack the infrastructure for processing. PA Flax is well on the way to achieving our goal of putting 4\,000 acres annually of fiber flax into production in Pennsylvania and establishing the first cooperatively owned scutching mill in North America by 2028.

She was the beverage director and bar manager for Art in the Age; craft cocktail bar\, where she developed a seasonally rotating menu of experimental cocktails. She also does freelance food\, beverage and prop styling for print and digital-media marketing campaigns. Jackie grew up helping out in her family’s art gallery where she learned about printmaking and art framing. She attended Savannah College of Art and Design for Art History and Arts Administration. In her spare time she enjoys learning new art skills and dabbles in mediums such as woodworking\, etching and ceramics. Jackie currently coordinates the planning and production of exhibitions at the Craft Coven Gallery\, where you can also find her mixing up cocktails for First Friday events. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Miriam Carpenter \nMiriam Carpenter is a contemporary artist based in Bucks County\, Pennsylvania whose work includes wood sculpture\, furniture\, ceramics and works on paper. As a Rhode Island School of Design alumna\, she began her career as a furniture designer at George Nakashima’s studio. Through new processes\, her work explores things often overlooked—unveiling the hidden complexities around us. Carpenter’s work can be found internationally in both private and public collections including the Michener Art Museum (PA) and the Museum for Art in Wood (PA)\, among others\, and has been exhibited most notably at the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Fuller Craft Museum\, Wharton Esherick Museum\, Museum for Art in Wood\, Philadelphia International Airport\, SOFA Chicago\, Design Miami/Paris and Moderne Gallery where she is currently represented. In 2021\, she had her fourth major solo exhibition with her first museum solo show at the Michener Art Museum. In 2025\, she was nominated for Cooper Hewitt\, Smithsonian Design Museum’s National Design Awards\, an official project of the White House Millennium Council which honors innovation and impact in design. She has been awarded six international residencies in the arts and is an active participant in artist collaborations around the globe. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				About Amrut Mishra \nAs the Assistant Curator for the Museum for Art in Wood\, Amrut coordinates the planning and production of exhibitions\, including exhibition design\, display\, and layout; production of signage; and organization of publications and ancillary program projects.  \nBefore joining the Museum for Art in Wood\, Amrut held positions at the Ackland Art Museum and Carolina Performing Arts while finishing his doctoral studies. Dec. 5\, 2025 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nPlease join us for the First Friday opening of American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood! \nDuring the 1970s\, prominent American woodturners like Bob Stocksdale and David Ellsworth marshalled their virtuosic talents to turn vessels that showcased the natural and idiosyncratic features of wood such as knots\, infestations\, and complex grain figure. Embracing species such as Brazilian rosewood\, African blackwood\, and pink ivory wood that appeared “exotic” to American audiences\, these artists highlighted the drama of naturally occurring figuration. By the 1980s\, artists began to challenge this prevailing orthodoxy; pioneers like Meryll Saylan questioned the creative value of rarefied wood types and the field’s prevailing rejection of surface decoration. American Graffiti: Painting\, Dyeing\, and Surface Design in Wood follows the rebellious\, experimental\, and often quirky spirit of artists who dare to obscure the unadulterated beauty of wood grain. \nDrawn from the Museum’s permanent collection\, American Graffiti presents twenty-one objects by eighteen artists. Works of turning\, carving\, and sculpture demonstrate how the allure of color and surface design has captivated artists working in wood. For some\, wood offers a blank canvas for representational sculpture\, embellished by the application of vivid paint or imagery. For others\, dye and surface texturing deepens the exploration of formal qualities like shape and volume\, without the distraction of figured patterning. Taken together\, these artists offer a tongue in cheek response to collectors\, enthusiasts\, and critics that limit their appreciation of wood art to the beauty of strictly natural features. As a self-taught artist\, Leo came into woodworking through community networks and mutual learning—not formal training. The performance will echo themes of cultural identities inherited through family or migration\, the building of new legacies within a heterogeneous society\, the fragility of democratic ideals\, and the failures of systems that promise unity\, liberty\, and self-governance. \nAbout the Artists \n  \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Taji Ra’oof Nahl (TR7) is a Philadelphia-based conceptual artist whose practice merges sculpture\, sound\, performance\, and experimental cinema into a site-responsive method he calls Field Trips to Staged Productions. A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts\, his work explores civic infrastructures\, ecological intelligence\, Islamic cosmology\, and African American intellectual lineage. His ongoing Abstract Dynamics series—often realized as duo projects—extends this approach through live scoring\, moving-image presentation\, and spatial activation. TR7 is the founder of Ra’oof Atelier\, Channel TR7\, Adam Vocabulary Club\, and The Other Sounds of Philadelphia. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Few musicians leave their audiences with a feeling that they have truly witnessed something amazing. Artist/Producer/Performer/Arranger/Innovator AND Bassist—JAMAALADEEN TACUMA does just that. This native Philadelphian has always stretched the old mold of what a bassist is supposed to play and how. Tacuma has redefined his instrument’s artistic potential. In the mid 70’s\, his creatively free approach to the bass caught the eye and ear of the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Tacuma became a member of Coleman’s electric band\, Prime Time\, he toured with the group and played on some of Coleman’s historic recordings such as: “Dancing In Your Head”\, “Body Meta”\, and “Of Human Feelings”. As a soloist\, Tacuma continued to push the musical envelope with his debut album\, simply titled “Showstopper\,” in 1983. Several records followed\, some of which include: Renaissance Man (1984)\, Music World (1987) and JukeBox (1989)\, Cosmetic\, Boss of The Bass\, which confirmed his ability to flip between various musical genres. Even the critics have had high praise for Tacuma’s musicianship and artistry. One year he received the highest number of votes ever for an electric bassist in the “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” category of the DownBeat critics’ poll. \n\nIn recent years\, Jamaaladeen has been gaining recognition from some of the United States most prestigious artist foundations. In 2011\, Jamaaladeen received the Pew Arts & Heritage Award\, the Marcus Garvey Foundation Award\, and the Uptown Theater Hall of Fame Award in 2014. Jamaaladeen has received composer’s residencies at the prestigious MacDowell Colony\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, and Civitella Rainier Italy\, where he composed a new project he will be presenting in 2015. The residency is designed for artists in Greater Philadelphia who work in the medium of wood and is a collaboration between the Museum for Art in Wood and NextFab. An exhibition of the work created over the two-month-long program will be presented at NextFab. \nABOUT LIN ELKINS \nLin is an artist\, furniture maker\, and craftswoman based in Philadelphia\, PA. Lin holds a BS in Furniture Design from Appalachian State University. Post graduate\, Lin has been a Fellow at UNC Asheville\, a craft education intern at North House Folk School\, the Staff Fellow and Media Coordinator at the Center for Furniture Craftsmanship. She also has assisted and led education courses at a variety of institutions\, including Penland School of Craft and Haystack Mountain School of Crafts. \nShe is driven by the dichotomy between the natural and the built environment and how that tension affects the spiritual and physical connection we have to ourselves and the world around us. She explores this through purposeful functionality\, playfulness\, and art\, creating opportunities for moments of comfort\, wonder\, and curiosity. \nABOUT NEXTFAB \n\nNextFab is a network of membership-based makerspaces that provide access to tools\, technology\, education\, events\, and services for makers and creatives. Fitzgerald. Fitzgerald \n Dr. Fitgerald has lectured worldwide including presentations to appraisers\, collectors\, museums\, and even several Atlantic Ocean crossings on Queen Elizabeth II. His books include American Furniture: 1650 to the Present (600 pages\, 800 illustrations)\, the standard text book in the field; the catalogue of studio furniture in the Smithsonian’s Renwick collection; and American Furniture Designers: 1900-2020\, published by Rowman Littlefield in 2022. His latest book\, The Art and Furniture of Tommy Simpson was published by Bloomsbury in January. These two exhibitions\, Viola Bordon: Muliebrity and BA Harington: Suite Américaine\, are a part of Radical Americana\, a series of exhibitions organized by The Clay Studio and a consortium of Philadelphia’s extensive collection of arts and cultural institutions that celebrate how today’s artists are continuing the city’s unique and rich legacy as a center for creativity and civic engagement. To learn more about the other participating artists and organizations\, please click HERE. \nAbout the Artist:\nSince 2012\, BA Harrington has been a Professor of Woodworking in the Department of Art and Design and Director of the Wood Center at Indiana University of Pennsylvania. She continues to write essays\, speak at conferences\, and build sculptural work in reference to early American furniture forms. She has held Windgate Artist Residencies at San Diego State University and SUNY Purchase and was a recipient of the Center for Craft’s inaugural Craft Research Fund Artist Fellowship. Each year this substantial mid-career grant is awarded to two artists who are revising\, reclaiming\, and advancing the history of craft through their work. Harrington graduated from the Cabinet & Furnituremaking program at the North Bennet Street School in Boston. She also holds an M.F.A. in Wood and an M.A. In Art History from the University of Wisconsin-Madison. \n  \n  \n  \nAbout the Artist:\nViola Bordon is an artist and educator based in Philadelphia whose work examines transformation across material\, ecological\, and social systems. Her quilting is an act that binds histories of labor\, belief\, and resistance. Working through inherited methods of reuse and repair\, she frames systems of power that shape both personal and collective experience. Her quilts negotiate structures that hold tension between faith and skepticism\, memory and material. Quiet repetitive labor forming articulated dissent\, allowing form itself to think through what endurance makes visible. Her practice also includes environmental installations\, drawing on methods of reuse\, endurance\, and collaboration. Her projects have been supported by the Fulbright Commission\, Lilly Endowment\, Sachs Program for Arts Innovation\, US Fish and Wildlife Service\, and Salt Planes State Park. April 29\, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:30 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE for TICKETS \nFollowing the release of his second graphic novel\, Umbra\, this past fall\, artist Colin Pezzano presents both Umbra and his debut Soma in a unique multimedia experience—featuring animations by Ricky Christian set to live musical scores for each work. Join us for this unique experience of art\, music\, and horror. \nColin Pezzano will have books\, records\, and posters available for sale and to sign after the performance. \nDoors open at 6:30\, music at 7:00 pm. \nSoma is a graphic novel told in forty-five woodcuts carved during the winter of 2022. A mundane horror processing the physical body and navigating domestic spaces. The narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. \nUmbra is a graphic novel composed of seventy woodcut prints that follows a dog walk through South Philadelphia in 2020. Wander the spaces where the familiar begins to empty out—where everyday environments shift toward estrangement\, absence\, or memorial.
