Curator\, publisher\, and educator Deirdre Visser will return and lead the follow-up edition of the roundtable\, discussing the evolution from conversation to exhibition with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood. \nJoin us for this enlightening and fun evening. \nSan Francisco native Deirdre Visser is an independent curator\, educator\, and visual artist in the city’s Mission District. Her work is rooted in the belief that arts and culture advance community engagement and catalyze discourse across differences. For more than a decade she’s engaged with the arts as a form of civic participation\, working collaboratively with the Skywatchers Ensemble in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district\, and has been a woodworker for three decades. January 19\, 2025 | 3:00 – 5:00 pm ET | In-person\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n\nClick HERE to RSVP \nOn January 19\, 2025\, the Museum for Art in Wood will host a special book signing event with interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and woodworker Gina Siepel. During the event\, visitors can meet Gina and have their copy of the book To Understand a Tree\, the full-color catalogue for the exhibition that ran from March – July 2024. To Understand a Tree is a multi-disciplinary project that focuses on the dignity of a living tree\, its network of eco-systemic relationships\, and the ubiquity of the material of wood in design and daily life. The publication includes writings\, commentary\, and images of the exhibition works and installation. It is hosted by the Arts Afield program at the MacLeish Field Station of Smith College\,  where Siepel is an artist-in-residence. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Gina Siepel\n\n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Portrait of Gina Siepel  \nGina Siepel (she/they) is an interdisciplinary artist\, designer\, and woodworker.  Their artistic practice reflects an engagement with place\, history\, queer experience\, and ecology\, and their work integrates conceptual concerns and craftsmanship with a focus on wood as a natural and a cultural material. Gina’s objects\, installations\, drawings\, videos\, and other works link aesthetic and materially based modes of artistic production to other forms of inquiry\, including collaboration\, social engagement\, site-based exploration\, and research. \nGina’s works have been shown in museums and galleries nationally\, including the Colby Museum\, the DeCordova Museum\, the Museum for Art in Wood\, Vox Populi Gallery\, the Center for Maine Contemporary Art\, and Amherst College. Gina holds a BFA from the School of Art + Design at SUNY Purchase and an MFA from the Maine College of Art\, and has taught at Amherst College\, Mount Holyoke College\, and currently teaches in the Massachusetts College of Art and Design MFA program. Gina is also currently a MacLeish Field Station Artist-in-Residence at Smith College\, and a 2023 recipient of a Teaching Artist Cohort Grant from the Center for Craft. She is currently enrolled in the Field Naturalist Certification Program at Mass Audubon\, and is a member of the Greenfield Tree Committee\, a volunteer urban forestry organization in Greenfield\, Massachusetts. \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Questions? January 3\, 2025 | 6:30 – 7:30 pm ET | In-person\nWalk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for a First Friday tour with artist Mark Sfirri of Inspirations\, Influences\, and Collaborations: Selections from the Museum’s Permanent Collection. \nIn this companion exhibition to Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia\, Sfirri selected eight artists whose work has had an outsized impact on his process. Largely drawn from the museum’s permanent collection\, Inspirations\, Influences and Collaborations showcases a wellspring of creativity that has sustained and nurtured Sfirri’s artistic growth. \nNoting the significance of this curated exhibition\, Sfirri writes: \nChange is at the core of my artistic pursuits. To me it is synonymous with creativity. It’s a constant challenge to move past territory you’ve already explored\, but it is the most rewarding and exciting part of my studio work. Usually the result is successful\, to my mind\, because I experiment until I come up with an idea that pleases me. That doesn’t mean that it’s successful in terms of acceptance and sales\, but that is not a deterrent. I move on. Creative inspiration is such a delicate thing; it must be seized when it presents itself. Failure to act can so easily result in a lost opportunity. \nI have engaged in collaboration with other artists off and on for nearly 40 years. You have the chance\, when the chemistry is right\, to see into another person’s creative process when you are working with them\, leading to a result which neither of you would have arrived at on your own. Collaboration can also lead to a new view of your own work. There are several pieces in this presented here that highlight some of my earlier collaborative efforts. Part 9\, which took place in October\, had so much material that we needed to follow up with a second part. Curator\, publisher\, and educator Deirdre Visser will return and lead the follow-up edition of the roundtable\, discussing the evolution from conversation to exhibition with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood. \nJoin us for this enlightening and fun afternoon. \nSan Francisco native Deirdre Visser is an independent curator\, educator\, and visual artist in the city’s Mission District. Her work is rooted in the belief that arts and culture advance community engagement and catalyze discourse across differences. For more than a decade she’s engaged with the arts as a form of civic participation\, working collaboratively with the Skywatchers Ensemble in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district\, and has been a woodworker for three decades. Each collaborator adds to a composition in sequence\, creating a finished composition. \nIn conjunction with the Museum for Art in Wood’s current exhibition\, Mark Sfirri: La Famiglia\, please join us for this woodcut printmaking workshop with artist Colin Pezzano. \nIn this three-hour workshop\, Colin will walk participants through the basics of carving\, inking\, and pressing a woodcut print. His practice combines digital and hand processes to infuse humor\, pathos\, and memory into his chosen materials. By relying on woodworking processes\, he connects his actions and memories to the traditions of his predecessors. \nColin graduated from the University Of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received The Faculty Choice Award and The Windgate Fellowship.  After graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first solo show\, “Contain You\,” at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. In 2018\, Colin had his second solo show\, “Still Life With Dead Game\,” at Allens Lane Art Center. In 2022\, he received The Windgate-Lamar Fellowship Award through The Center for Craft. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition “Home as Stage” at the Wharton Esherick Museum in the fall of 2022\, Colin released a graphic novel titled Soma\, told in 45 woodcuts. A “mundane horror\,” the narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. \nDuring his career Pezzano has participated in group shows\, juried exhibitions and attended residencies in the USA and Sweden. He maintains his practice in his basement studio.

DESCRIPTION:Gallery Talk for La Famiglia with Mark Sfirri | Sat\, Nov. 2\, 2024 | 11:00 – 12 pm ET | In-person at the Museum for Art in Wood\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin the Museum for Art in Wood for an in-depth conversation with artist and woodturner Mark Sfirri for his current exhibition La Famiglia. Mark Sfirri will share his way of thinking about the definition of family and its meanings through different lenses: families that are chosen vs. born into; families of species (trees and wood types) and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love\, support\, and dysfunction. The artist’s adoption of a spontaneous\, “flow state” approach in his turning\, carving\, and surfacing processes represents a coming to terms with generational passing. The artist will walk us through his installations of sculpture that consider communities comprised of families with their histories\, ethnic backgrounds\, biases\, and quirks—all trying to coexist in new and evolving worlds. \nFollowing the gallery talk\, a book signing will take place for the accompanying full-color catalogue\, published by the Museum for Art in Wood. The catalogue includes essays by artist Miriam Carpenter and writer and curator Craig Edelbrock\, writings by Sfirri\, and documentation on the works in the exhibition. \nMark Sfirri is an esteemed figure in the world of woodturning and woodworking. Born with an innate passion for craftsmanship\, creativity\, and artistic collaboration\, he is renowned for his innovations in art in wood. \nSfirri earned a BFA and MFA in Furniture Design at Rhode Island School of Design\, where he began to explore ways to incorporate lathe-turned parts into furniture and turned some double-rimmed platters\, one of which was his first off-center turning. As an MFA student\, he made a set of six dining chairs constructed of off-center turned elements\, which planted the seeds for his future experimentations in multi-axis spindle turning. \nSfirri’s work has been exhibited in prestigious galleries and museums worldwide\, and is held in numerous public collections including the Museum of Arts & Design (NY)\, Carnegie Museum of Art (Pittsburgh\, PA)\, the Renwick Gallery of the Smithsonian American Art Museum (DC)\, the Minneapolis Institute of Art (MN)\, the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (CA)\, Yale University Art Gallery\, the James A. Michener Art Museum (Doylestown\, PA)\, and the Museum of Art in Wood (Philadelphia\, PA). As a maker\, researcher\, and writer\, he has conducted demonstrations and lectures throughout North America\, Europe\, Australia\, and New Zealand. \nIn addition to his role as an artist\, Sfirri is professor emeritus at Bucks County Community College (Newtown\, PA)\, where he taught fulltime for nearly 40 years. This exhibition presents a way of thinking about the definition of family and its meanings through different lenses: families that are chosen vs. born into; families of species (trees and wood types) and identities; and familial strife and unconditional love\, support\, and dysfunction. It wasn’t until I moved away from home that I came to realize how much these details brought comfort and warmth to my childhood memories. \n\n\n\nAfter completing my education at The School of the Art Institute of Chicago\, I became a Historic Carpenter working on the preservation of homes built in the early 1900’s. Curator\, publisher\, and educator Deirdre Visser\, will lead the next edition of the roundtable on the evolution from conversation to exhibition with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood. \nJoin us for this enlightening and fun afternoon. \nSan Francisco native Deirdre Visser is an independent curator\, educator\, and visual artist in the city’s Mission District. Her work is rooted in the belief that arts and culture advance community engagement and catalyze discourse across difference. For more than a decade she’s engaged with the arts as a form of civic participation\, working collaboratively with the Skywatchers Ensemble in San Francisco’s Tenderloin district\, and has been a woodworker for three decades. Departing from these typical associations\, Strange Woodcraft: Weird and Eerie Sculpture from the Museum’s Permanent Collection\, presents works which nurture a discomforting curiosity with the unfamiliar. Taking inspiration from cultural critic Mark Fisher’s insight that our attraction to the “weird” and the “eerie” stem from a fascination for “what lies beyond standard perception\, cognition and experience\,” Strange Woodcraft embraces sculptural forms which feel out of place\, askew\, haunting\, or just downright odd. \nResiding in the gallery of the Fleur and Charles Bresler Research Library at the Museum for Art in Wood\, this exhibition includes work from sixteen artists\, held in the museum’s permanent collection\, whose sculptural forms probe at the weird\, eerie—and perhaps even grotesque—registers of wood. This highly anticipated exhibition reveals artwork made by the 2024 WARP Wood fellows\, a cohort made up of professional artists\, a student artist\, a documentary artist\, and a scholar. \nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? In this exhibition\, the international group of artists presents work created during the residency\, which emphasizes research\, exploration\, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment.
