DESCRIPTION:First Friday | Fri\, September 4\, 2026 | 5:00 – 8:00 pm | In-person Event\nWalk-in’s Welcome \nThis First Friday\, stop into the Museum for Art in Wood and experience Out of Place WARP Wood 2026.  The exhibition features the work created by six artist fellows during the two-month-long Windgate Wood Arts Residency Program (WARP-Wood) and emphasizes the research\, exploration\, and the opportunity to work in a collaborative environment. Also on view in the Museum’s research library is A Room of Their Own\, presenting the work of ten artists; while you’re upstairs\, be sure to explore our permanent collection of over 1\,400 objects. DESCRIPTION:Frist Friday Opening for Donna Dodson: Match of the Martriarchs | Nov. 6\, 2026 | 5 - 8 pm \n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				Walk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for the opening of Match of the Matriarchs. \n\n\nMatch of the Matriarchs centers on a monumental\, interactive chessboard featuring 32 life-size\, movable chess pieces hand-carved from salvaged wood. Modeled on female archetypes and marine beings—cephalopods\, cetaceans\, and mermaids—Dodson’s sculptures transform the traditionally hierarchical game into a speculative arena of matriarchal power and ecological symbolism. Long coded as a test of masculine intellect and mastery\, chess in this match becomes a site of reversal: the queen’s latent authority resurfaces\, and new strategies come into view. Working with reclaimed wood—its ranging tones and scars visible to all—Dodson aligns chess with material memory\, presenting the game as a dynamic system of multi-generational wisdom\, stratagem\, and transformation over domination. \nComplementing Dodson’s installation are wood chess sets made by other artists alongside video works by Philadelphia-based chess champion and historian Jen Shahade\, whose wry\, incisive lens reclaims visibility for women in chess culture. Previously exhibited at the World Chess Hall of Fame\, St. Louis\, MO\, and the Boston Sculptors Gallery\, the project evolves at the Museum for Art in Wood through expanded programming and performance. \n\n\n			\n				\n				\n				\n				\n				\n\nDonna Dodson is an American sculptor internationally recognized for her monumental figurative works carved from wood. Working primarily with salvaged and reclaimed timber\, she transforms the material’s grain\, scale\, and physical presence into expressive female archetypes\, mythic beings\, and hybrid forms that challenge traditional hierarchies of power. A 2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar at Q21/MuseumsQuartier Vienna\, Dodson has completed residencies in Switzerland\, Peru\, Taiwan\, and Denmark. She is currently a Scholar at the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center and a Visual Art Fellow at the St. Botolph Club in Boston. \nHer work is held in the permanent collections of the World Chess Hall of Fame\, the Fuller Craft Museum\, the Provincetown Art Museum\, the Art Complex Museum\, the Noyes Art Museum\, and the Davistown Museum\, and her work has been reviewed in The Boston Globe\, Sculpture Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Artnet\, and The Daily Beast. Historian of social justice movements\, Emily K. Hobson\, hosts this edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. \nJoin us for this enlightening and community-filled afternoon. \nAbout Emily K. Hobson \nEmily K. Hobson is a historian of radical movements in the postwar United States focused on queer politics\, international and anti-racist solidarities\, HIV/AIDS\, and prison activism. An Associate Professor of History at the University of Nevada\, Reno\, she is the author of Lavender and Red: Liberation and Solidarity in the Gay and Lesbian Left (2016) and co-editor\, with Dan Berger\, of Remaking Radicalism: A Grassroots Documentary Reader of the United States\, 1973-2001 (2020). Her current research on the history of HIV/AIDS prison activism has won fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities\, National Humanities Center\, the ONE Archives Foundation\, and Smith College and been published in Signs\, Radical History Review\, QED\, Sinister Wisdom\, The Abolitionist\, and Truthout.
