DESCRIPTION:On Saturday\, November 14th\, craft steps out of the studio and into the heart of Philadelphia with CraftNOWCreate\, a hands-on exploration of craft at the Kimmel Center. All activities are free and family-friendly. \nDemonstrations by the Center are programmed by Suzanne Kahn and include a wooden whistle workshop by Beth Ireland\, wood turning on the lathe by Derek Weidman. \nOther activities and demonstrations included ceramic artists going head-to-head in a series of “battles” on the pottery wheel\, and a “make your own scarf” machine knitting station. \nFeaturing activities and demonstrations by The Center for Art in Wood\, the Clay Studio\, the Philadelphia Art Alliance\, the Philadelphia Museum of Art\, Tyler School of Art and the University of the Arts.

SUMMARY:CRAFT / FACTURING: AN EVOLUTION OF MAKERS + ENTREPRENEURSHIP FS2016
DESCRIPTION:Furniture Society Conference\, Philadelphia\, PA\nCraft-facturing addresses a contemporary community of Makers who are socially engaged\, collaborative and digitally savvy. New paradigms for making and production\, sharing and distribution are emerging that both support and challenge the more traditional role of the craftsperson in our culture. The 2016 FS conference will frame this moment in Philadelphia’s rich environment as a unique and vital site of past and future crafts activity. \nProgramming at conference aims to offer multiple perspectives. The discussions will explore new and traditional methods and their conceptual repercussions in the contemporary wood and ceramic art fields. \nProduction Values: The Relevance of Technique in Contemporary Art and Design is the keynote address by Glenn Adamson on Friday\, October 28\, 2016 at 5:30 will also celebrate the kick off of Craft NOW’s 2016 season. A reception will follow the talk at both The Center for Art in Wood and The Clay Studio from 7-8:30. The keynote is free and open to the public\, but registration is required. A half day of talks and moderated discussions is being planned surrounding the theme Making a Difference and is generously being hosted by The University of the Arts. Presentations will focus on the use of craft and making to promote positive change\, social cohesion and meaningful dialogue. \nRoberto Lugo will be the keynote speaker presenting Pottery Saved My Life. In Lugo’s words\, his experiences as a poor\, brown kid from the ghetto of Kensington Philadelphia have provided years of research from which his work as a potter\, activist\, culture-maker\, rapper\, poet\, and educator.
