SUMMARY:Music is Medicine: Healing our Environment Through Music with Raji Malik
DESCRIPTION:Music is Medicine: Healing our Environment Through Music with Raji Malik | Thurs. Feb. 8\, 2024 | 6:30 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a unique musical evening with musician Raji Malik for the Museum’s current exhibition\, FLOE: A Climate of Risk | The Fictional Archaeology of Stephen Talasnik. FLOE tells the story of a fictitious shipwreck carried to Philadelphia by the glacier that buried it. As global temperatures warmed brought on by climate change\, the glacier melted and surrendered the ship’s remains. \nClimate change is a problem that exposes the vulnerability of the world’s most defenseless populations\, including the impoverished\, house-less\, and stateless\, while shifts in global temperatures threaten the macro-financial stability of the region. \nTo address a specter as powerful as climate change\, we need to look within and find the places where we can sense our interconnection. Malik’s acoustic\, Indian-influenced\, instrumental music medicine will create a portal through which we may more clearly channel love and healing within ourselves and our environment. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Raji Malik\n\nRaji Malik has performed and recorded hard rock and instrumental Indian-influenced music in the Philadelphia area for the past 30 years.  He is self-taught and started playing guitar when he was 19.  Malik’s initial musical influences were the great rock guitarists Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)\, Jimi Hendrix\, and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd).  Then he discovered Shakti\, featuring 3 masterful Indian musicians and guitar legend John Mclaughlin playing a modified sitar-like acoustic guitar. Malik promptly put away his electric guitar and immersed himself in the pure tones of the acoustic guitar.  Malik finds deep inspiration from many brilliant “Modern Fingerstyle” guitarists who are all disciples of the late Michael Hedges\, who reinvented the acoustic guitar with his harmonic percussive playing.  Malik hopes that his music brings peace\, healing\, and inspiration. \nMay this musical meditation bring you a deeper appreciation of your goodness.  May we all continue to challenge ourselves to grow with honest self-reflection so that we may more clearly channel love.  That is why we are here.—Raji Malik \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? Please contact Katie Sorenson\, Director of Outreach and Communications at katie@museumforartinwood.org.

Artist\, curator\, and lecturer Daniel Fountain\, PhD\, will lead the next edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. Join us for an enlightening and fun afternoon. \nDaniel Fountain (he/they) is an artist\, curator\, and lecturer in art history and visual culture at the University of Exeter. They hold a practice-based PhD in queer craft and have since published widely on this topic. As an artist\, Daniel has exhibited on an international level\, and their work has been featured in several publications\, including Surface Design Journal\, Crafts\, and Embroidery: The Textile Art Magazine. They have also co-produced a range of public programmes with the likes of Tate\, Crafts Council\, and The Venice Biennale. Dr. Fountain has two forthcoming books on craft and queer visual culture. The first\, Crafted with Pride: Queer Craft and Activism in Contemporary Britain (Intellect Books and University of Chicago Press\, 2023) is an edited collection about queer craft and the material cultures of LGBTQ+ activism in Britain since the 1980s. The second\, Queer Crafts (Bloomsbury\, 2025) spotlights the work of LGBTQ+ creative practitioners engaging with textile\, ceramic\, metal\, wood\, paper\, and glass. \nThis event is free to the public. Please contact Katie Sorenson\, Director of Outreach and Communications\, at katie@museumforartinwood.org.

DESCRIPTION:A Discussion on Humaira Abid’s Sacred Games II with Founder of USILOQUY Dance Designs\, Shaily Dadiala | Sat. Feb. 4\, 2023 | 2 pm ET | Hybrid Event\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a multidisciplinary talk and response to Humaira Abid’s Sacred Games II in the exhibition Vessel: Embodiment\, Autonomy\, and Ornament in Wood with the Founder of USILOQUY Dance Designs\, Shaily Dadiala. \nImage above: Humaira Abid\, Sacred Games II\, 2020 photo by Adeel Ahmed \nPortrait of Shaily Dadiala by Kiruthik Sai \nShaily Dadiala is a choreographer\, dancer\, and cultural producer. She is the Artistic Director of Usiloquy Dance\, which she founded in 2008. \nShe choreographs and performs original works based on the techniques of the Indian Classical dance style Bharatanatyam. She holds a bachelor’s in arts specializing in Bharatanatyam from India (1994)\, where she was born and raised. Her work applies vocabulary rooted in Bharatanatyam\, exploring the lesser-known cultural aspects of diasporas and communities that are misrepresented when it comes to social equity. The grid formed by intersections of migration\, race\, and gender drives the strategy behind her work. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? SUMMARY:How it Started and How it’s Going: Collector talk with Randy Pi
DESCRIPTION:How it Started and How it’s Going: Collector talk with Randy Pi | Wed. Sept 14\, 2022 | 6:30 pm EDT | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for How it Started and How it’s Going\, a speaker series with collectors. We’ll dive into their collections and learn about how they got started and why; we’ll hear what attracts them to certain pieces and see some of their favorite works. We will also discuss what makes someone a collector of art and how to start your own collection. Our next talk features collector and ER physician Randy Pi. \nPortrait of Randy Pi with some of his collection. \nRandy Pi: I’m an ER physician by night and a world traveler\, music lover\, and\, as my friends say\, patron of the arts by day.  I am so uplifted by incredible sights and sounds on my global jaunts.  Human artistic and architectural achievements as well as scenes of natural grandeur fill me with awe and humility. They inspire me to stay motivated and resilient in my demanding line of work. The tallest tree in the world is right here in my home state of California. The widest tree in the world is located in not-too-far Oaxaca\, Mexico where local artisans produce some of the world’s most exquisite woodworks. I can’t bring any giant trees home. I can’t bring any timber-constructed ancient castles from around the world home.  But I can bring music from different cultures home.  And by golly I can bring contemporary sculptures\, turned wood art and designs\, studio furniture\,  and traditional crafts home.  Living with wood art is a continuous source of joy and inspiration. When one thinks of music and wood\, the violin comes to mind. But for the home\, there is another important connection\, namely the stereo speakers. The illusion of live music playing at home can only be created by stereo speakers of sufficient size and volume. The vast majority of these speakers are wood constructions. And so at the confluence of engineering\, design\, and ethereal music lie the first wood sculptures at my home—stereo speakers. Looking back\, that’s where the story of my wood collection began. Hope you’ll join me as this story unfolds. It shall be one filled with lyrical and creative souls I’ve met along the way. \nDon’t miss this special glimpse into a collection! SUMMARY:Queering Wood Craft: An LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 5
DESCRIPTION:Queering Wood Craft: An LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 5 | Sat. Sept 10\, 2022 | 1:00 pm ET | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Center for Art in Wood launched a series of conversations with queer woodworkers. Independent scholar and curator John-Duane Kingsley will lead this edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. Join us for an enlightening and fun afternoon. \nJohn-Duane Kingsley is a divergent thinker whose professional work and interests straddle LGBTQIA+ identity and representation within museums\, historic interiors\, contemporary craft/design\, and public education. Because these topics aren’t contained by a specific institution or discipline\, Kingsley created the DANDYCRAFT website to serve as a publicly accessible repository of his work. \nAfter pursuing an MA in Decorative Arts & Design History from George Washington University\, Kingsley moved to Detroit\, Michigan\, to supervise the design of custom reproduction furniture and decorative arts for the restoration of Fair Lane: The Home of Clara & Henry Ford. His consulting work for Twisted Preservation Cultural Consulting focuses on interpreting LGBTQIA+ narratives in cultural heritage sites. Kingsley is a published author writing on contemporary craft and design\, can be found in MetalSmith Magazine\, The Journal of Modern Craft\, and exhibit catalog for allTURNatives at the Center for Art in Wood in Philadelphia\, PA\, and as a contributing writer for the Decorative Arts Trust Bulletin.
