SUMMARY:Hold Signal: A Response to Distance - SOLD OUT
DESCRIPTION:Hold Signal: A Response to Distance | Thurs. April 17\, 2025 | 7:30 pm ET | In-person\nSOLD OUT \nHold Signal: A Response to Distance is an experiential tour of the Museum’s space through sound with artists Sam Gasparre and Colin Pezzano. This special event engages with echoes\, loops\, and resonances\, inviting participants to navigate the Museum in a new\, sensory way. Join us for a unique evening at the Museum like never before. \nSpace is limited. RSVP is required to attend this event. \n \nAbout the Artists \nSam Gasparre\nSamuel Gasparre is a Philadelphia musician and craftsman who works with guitars\, computers\, wood\, electronics\, and voice. His music has spanned genres\, from jazz to punk rock to free improvisation and he has performed in both concert halls and basements.  He apprenticed as a luthier and has worked in stringed instrument repair and woodworking for over a decade. Combining his background in composition and fabrication\, Sam makes and repairs the equipment used while performing. He is currently playing in the band DeStructos as well as hosting a local film screening series Cinema Diabolique. \n\n\nColin Pezzano\nColin Pezzano\, born in 1992\, is a woodworker\, printmaker\, and craft artist based in South Philadelphia. His practice combines digital and hand processes to infuse humor\, pathos\, and memory into his chosen materials. By relying on woodworking processes\, he connects his actions and memories to the traditions of his predecessors. \nColin graduated from the University Of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received The Faculty Choice Award and The Windgate Fellowship.  After graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first solo show\, “Contain You\,” at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. In 2018\, Colin had his second solo show\, “Still Life With Dead Game\,” at Allens Lane Art Center. In 2022\, he received The Windgate-Lamar Fellowship Award through The Center for Craft. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition “Home as Stage” at the Wharton Esherick Museum in the fall of 2022\, Colin released a graphic novel titled Soma\, told in 45 woodcuts. A “mundane horror\,” the narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. \nDuring his career Pezzano has participated in group shows\, juried exhibitions and attended residencies in the USA and Sweden. He maintains his practice in his basement studio. \nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? Please contact Katie Sorenson\, Director of Outreach and Communications at katie@museumforartinwood.org. \nPictured above:\nDetail installation image of the exhibition Katie Hudnall: The Longest Distance between Two Points. He achieved fame as a leader of the modern American Arts and Crafts movement. George earned a master’s degree in architecture from M.I.T in 1931. In 1934\, Nakashima joined the architecture firm of Antonin Raymond\, a protégé of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. However\, after spending a year in a WWII Japanese American internment camp in 1942\, along with his wife and daughter\, Mira\, Nakashima decided to pursue a new career as a furniture designer\, where he championed traditional philosophies and craftsmanship. Nakashima is recognized as one of America’s most eminent furniture designer-craftsman and his style of “organic naturalism” can be seen in the buildings\, landscape\, and furniture located in the Nakashima Woodworkers Complex in New Hope\, PA\, which has been recognized as a National Landmark and a World Monument. Private tours of the Nakashima studio are offered through the Nakashima Foundation for Peace and George Nakashima’s work can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum\, Mingei International Museum and Michener Art Museum.  \n \n \n \n \n \n About George Nakashima Woodworkers\nFounded in 1945 by the late Japanese American George Nakashima\, Nakashima Woodworkers focuses on material and craftmanship by creating timeless furniture pieces from sustainably harvested hardwoods\, particularly American black walnut\, made to be aesthetically pleasing and utilitarian at the same time. The studio works only with solid wood and with an immense respect for the material. George believed that natural materials\, such as wood\, should be “studied\, understood and respected”. They custom-mill sustainably harvested hardwoods and select the resulting planks individually for each project.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Portrait of Mira Nakashima \n \n \n \n \n \n Questions? SUMMARY:Music is Medicine: Healing our Environment Through Music with Raji Malik
DESCRIPTION:Music is Medicine: Healing our Environment Through Music with Raji Malik | Thurs. Feb. 8\, 2024 | 6:30 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nClick HERE to RSVP \nJoin us for a unique musical evening with musician Raji Malik for the Museum’s current exhibition\, FLOE: A Climate of Risk | The Fictional Archaeology of Stephen Talasnik. FLOE tells the story of a fictitious shipwreck carried to Philadelphia by the glacier that buried it. As global temperatures warmed brought on by climate change\, the glacier melted and surrendered the ship’s remains. \nClimate change is a problem that exposes the vulnerability of the world’s most defenseless populations\, including the impoverished\, house-less\, and stateless\, while shifts in global temperatures threaten the macro-financial stability of the region. \nTo address a specter as powerful as climate change\, we need to look within and find the places where we can sense our interconnection. Malik’s acoustic\, Indian-influenced\, instrumental music medicine will create a portal through which we may more clearly channel love and healing within ourselves and our environment. \n\n\n\n\nAbout Raji Malik\n\nRaji Malik has performed and recorded hard rock and instrumental Indian-influenced music in the Philadelphia area for the past 30 years.  He is self-taught and started playing guitar when he was 19.  Malik’s initial musical influences were the great rock guitarists Jimmy Page (Led Zeppelin)\, Jimi Hendrix\, and David Gilmour (Pink Floyd).  Then he discovered Shakti\, featuring 3 masterful Indian musicians and guitar legend John Mclaughlin playing a modified sitar-like acoustic guitar. Malik promptly put away his electric guitar and immersed himself in the pure tones of the acoustic guitar.  Malik finds deep inspiration from many brilliant “Modern Fingerstyle” guitarists who are all disciples of the late Michael Hedges\, who reinvented the acoustic guitar with his harmonic percussive playing.  Malik hopes that his music brings peace\, healing\, and inspiration. \nMay this musical meditation bring you a deeper appreciation of your goodness.  May we all continue to challenge ourselves to grow with honest self-reflection so that we may more clearly channel love.  That is why we are here.—Raji Malik \n\n\n\nThis event is free to the public. SUMMARY:Queering Wood Craft: An LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 6
DESCRIPTION:Queering Wood Craft: an LGBTQIA+ Woodworkers Roundtable Part 6 | Sat. May 20\, 2023 | 12:00 pm ET | LIVE on ZOOM\nClick HERE to RSVP \nThe Museum for Art in Wood launched a series of conversations with queer woodworkers. Artist\, curator\, and lecturer Daniel Fountain\, PhD\, will lead the next edition of the roundtable discussion with leading queer woodworkers and artists in wood\, sharing the ways their lived experience impacts their craft\, process\, and aesthetic. Join us for an enlightening and fun afternoon. \nDaniel Fountain (he/they) is an artist\, curator\, and lecturer in art history and visual culture at the University of Exeter. They hold a practice-based PhD in queer craft and have since published widely on this topic. As an artist\, Daniel has exhibited on an international level\, and their work has been featured in several publications\, including Surface Design Journal\, Crafts\, and Embroidery: The Textile Art Magazine. They have also co-produced a range of public programmes with the likes of Tate\, Crafts Council\, and The Venice Biennale. Dr. Fountain has two forthcoming books on craft and queer visual culture. The first\, Crafted with Pride: Queer Craft and Activism in Contemporary Britain (Intellect Books and University of Chicago Press\, 2023) is an edited collection about queer craft and the material cultures of LGBTQ+ activism in Britain since the 1980s. The second\, Queer Crafts (Bloomsbury\, 2025) spotlights the work of LGBTQ+ creative practitioners engaging with textile\, ceramic\, metal\, wood\, paper\, and glass.
