DESCRIPTION:LIVE Marquetry Demo | Tara Bellofatto | Fri. Dec. 6\, 2019 |  The Center for Art in Wood\n  \nJoin us for First Friday for a live marquetry demo with Tara Bellofatto. Meet the artist and watch her manipulate delicate\, paper-thin pieces of veneer to create dynamic images in wood. During the evening\, you will also have the opportunity to sign up for the two-day Marquetry Madness Class hosted by the Center for Art in Wood and taking place at the University of the Arts on Sat\, Jan 11\, and Sun\, Jan 12\, 2020. \nThis class is appropriate for all skill levels. No prior woodworking experience required. \nFor more information and for registration click HERE. \nTara Bellofatto\nPhiladelphia/Southern New Jersey-based woodworker\, Tara Bellofatto\, has been honing her skills as a furniture maker and marquetarian since graduating from the University of the Arts in 2010. Tara has exhibited at the Cosmopolitan Club\, Philadelphia’s City Hall\, Attleboro Arts Museum. She has participated in alumni exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Philadelphia Furniture Show. \nGrowing up with an appreciation for what has come before\, Tara pays homage to the pop culture of the past\, being heavily influenced by striking images found within movements and periods such as Art Deco\, pre-code Hollywood\, and Germany’s Weimar era. She blends her passion for woodworking and her enthusiasm for vintage film\, music\, literary\, and (especially) horror icons. Entirely cut by hand\, her marquetry presents rewarding challenges\, allowing her to connect to and become completely immersed in her creations. \nTara Bellofatto maintains her practice out of her home studio in New Jersey and currently works at the University of the Arts as a Lecturer and Wood Shop Technician.

She began competing in the Philly Youth Poetry Movement’s slam league when she was in ninth grade. Since then\, she has performed at many open mics and slams in Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Washington\, d.c. and New York. She earned a spot on Philadelphia’s Brave New Voices team in 2017. In 2018 Kadidja was awarded Artwell’s Student Leader award. Currently\, she is a sophomore in college studying education at the secondary level. Kadidja wholeheartedly believes in poetry’s ability to confront social issues\, spread awareness\, and tell stories of marginalized people. \n  \n  \nReese Florence Coran \nPhiladelphia based singer-songwriter Reese Florence is a hand percussionist\, ukulele\, and guitar player. A purely haunting\, bluesy\, and soulful sound; effortlessly expressing inner wisdom through the preparation of her freshman album\, to be released in Autumn 2020.

Making Home Movies partners adult and youth English language learners with filmmakers and poets to explore the language and imagery of home and to create community together. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm and viewing begins at 7:00 pm. Wine and light fare will be available. \nThis project has been funded by the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIdS). The Porch Light program is a collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia and DBHIdS. Partners include the African Cultural Alliance of North America Inc\, The Exchange at Oxford Circle\, Horace Howard Furness High School\, PhillyCAM\, Northeast High School\, and Southeast by Southeast. \n

This program will focus on regional practice against a three-hundred-year history of artisanship and craft manufacture in Pennsylvania. Milliken\, who curated the Center’s Pennsylvania Made exhibition\, will talk about wooden vessels\, furniture\, saffron boxes\, and sculpture while touching upon processes of ornamental wood turning\, the commitment to the value of collaboration in Pennsylvania craft and design\, and other discussions unique to creative engagement with wood in the region. \nJennifer-Navva Milliken is the Artistic Director for The Center for Art in Wood. Prior to her arrival at the Center\, she served as an embedded staff member in international art museums\, as an independent curator\, and as the founder of a cross-disciplinary art space. Please note that this screening offers closed captioning. \nVon Rydingsvard in her Williamsburg studio on South 5th Street\, surrounded by the cedar cast of katul katul\, 2002. \nUrsula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own is an artistic biography of one of the few women in the world working in monumental sculpture. Von Rydingvard’s work has been featured in the Venice Biennale and is held in the collections of some of the world’s great museums\, including New York’s Museum of Modern Art\, the Art Institute of Chicago\, and the San Francisco Museum of Modern Art. But she may be best-known for work in Public spaces – imposing pieces painstakingly crafted with complex surfaces. \nVon Rydingsvard and assistants preparing to work on Ene Due Rabe\, San Francisco\, 1990. \nVon Rydingsvard working on the patina of Uroda\, a monumental copper sculpture commissioned by Princeton University\, 2015. \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \n  \nIn this documentary\, we go behind the scenes with von Rydingsvard\, as she and her collaborators – cutters\, metalsmiths\, and others – produce new work\, including challenging commissions in copper and bronze. But the film also delves into the artist’s personal life\, and how it has shaped her work. Born in Poland during the Second World War\, she was partly raised in a displaced persons camp and came to the US as a refugee with her nine-person family. Her younger brother shares memories of being raised by their violent\, domineering father – a man whose influence von Rydingsvard continues to feel. Brought up in a blue-collar environment\, she became a teacher and then\, as a single mother\, moved to New York in the 1970s to take up her artistic practice full-time. \nIn conversations with curators\, patrons\, family\, and fellow artists\, we come to know von Rydingsvard as a driven but compassionate sculptor with a deep commitment to her art and the world around her. \nPlease also join us for the Into Her Own Panel Discussion on Thursday\, June 18\, 2020 at 6:30 with artists Ursula von Rydingsvard and Vivian Chiu and Daniel Traub\, the director of the film Ursula von Rydingsvard: Into Her Own moderated by Jennifer-Navva Milliken\, Artistic Director of the Center for Art in Wood.
