Readings will take place during the course of First Friday evening in conjunction with Object Lesson a First Friday speaker series. While here at the Center we invite guests to explore the exhibition\, Museum Collection and shop for unique items in our Museum Store. \nReaders: Norman Cain\, Sarah Grey\, Briyanna Hymms\, Lauren Lowe \nDebates\, Defenses\, and Dreams by Norman Cain\nNorman Cain was born in 1942 and raised on Olive Street in West Philadelphia. He graduated in 1964 from Bluefield State College in West Virginia where he majored in social science and minored in English. A retired social worker\, teacher\, father of five and grandfather of seven\, he is active in several writing groups\, including the Best Day of My Life So Far at the Philadelphia Senior Center. His work can be read in several volumes of the Drexel Writers Room’s Anthology series\, Milestones\, The Best Day of My Life So Far\, and in numerous online and local publications. \nSalvaging the Dormant: On Language by Sarah Grey\nSarah Grey is a freelance writer based in Philadelphia. Her work on topics including politics\, language\, food\, and labor has appeared in Best Food Writing 2015\, Jacobin\, Bitch\, Saveur\, International Socialist Review\, Monthly Review\, Lucky Peach\, and more. She edits and indexes academic\, activist\, and creative nonfiction (with a specialty in Marxism) for publishers and individuals under the name Grey Editing (greyediting.com) and was awarded the American Copy Editors Society’s 2016 Robinson Prize for Excellence in Copy Editing. \nTime Stamps by Briyanna Hymms\nBriyanna Hymms majored in biology (BS ’18) and minored in writing at Drexel University. She is an active member of Drexel’s Writers Room\, where you can find pieces of her poetry\, creative nonfiction writing\, and art. In her free time\, she takes care of her garden and spends time with her loved ones. Her story is woven with strands of inspiration from friends and family\, helping to form the tapestry of her life. \nSome Old Houses by Lauren Lowe\nLauren Lowe is a Drexel alum (BA English\, ’17). During the 2017-2018 academic year\, she served as an Artist Year fellow and taught creative writing at Paul Robeson High School in West Philadelphia. She is a regular member of Drexel Writers Room and a fervent Sixers fan—both have taught her how to trust the process. \nThe Head & The Hand is a nonprofit\, independent craft publishing company and writers’ workshop based in Philadelphia.\nWe call it “craft” because we consider writers to be artisans\, much like a carpenter or a farmer. And just as a farmer is connected to the crop from the seed to the harvest\, we think that a writer should be connected to the process of crafting a book\, from manuscript submission to the shelf. \nWith business practices influenced by the work ethic of artisans\, we strive to work with authors\, both aspiring and established\, whose work is not confined to a specific style or mindset. DESCRIPTION:Young Artist Speaker Series | Artist Colin Pezzano | Wed\, March 6\, 2019 | 6 – 8 pm | The Center for Art in Wood\nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present the Young Artist Speaker Series. Each semester a young artist is asked to share their work and speak about the transition from academia to an independent artist. The first in the series will feature artist Colin Pezzano taking place on Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019\, from 6 – 8 pm. \nColin Pezzano is a woodworker based out of Philadelphia\, PA.  Pezzano projects his unique sensibility onto the possibilities of furniture and uses this to offset the domestic environment with pathos and humor. His work is an honest self-searching\, channeling childhood experience and memory to bring beauty to the mundane\, shaping into an object the awkward fumbling form of youth and naivety. The result is something truly unique\, and surprisingly moving; considering the stark\, often minimal approach he takes in design. In these pieces\, in his take on everyday objects\, Pezzano strives to convey a long-lost sense of awe and wonder\,  a chance for a moment to regain a bit of our inner child\, our absent innocence.   He pushes himself in self-discovery\, and in that finds a piece of himself; a piece of all of us. \nColin graduated from University of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received the Windgate Fellowship.  After Graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and was interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first Solo show “Contain You”  at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Since then\, Pezzano has appeared in several shows and galleries including The Smithsonian Craft Show (2016). Following the Smithsonian Craft show\, Colin was inspired to develop a small production line of furniture and objects\, collaborating with other craft artists. In 2018\, Colin had his second Solo show “Still Life with Dead Game”. Pezzano maintains his practice in Philadelphia out of his basement studio and currently is working at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood is a nonprofit arts organization. The 2018 recipient for the Bob Stocksdale International Excellence in Wood Award is Ben Strear of Grand Rapids\, Michigan. \nSupported by an anonymous donor and now in its third year\, the Bob Stocksdale International Excellence in Wood Award presents a grant of $1\,000 to an emerging or mid-career artist whose work\, like Stocksdale’s\, unites quality of craftsmanship and respect for materials. Recognizing the 2018 Stocksdale Award will be Trent Rhodes\, a Lois F. McNeil Fellow and recent graduate of the Winterthur Program in American Culture\, with a lecture on Strear and Stocksdale (1913–2003)\, a renowned master woodturner. Rhodes will discuss Strear’s work in context of the values reflected in Stocksdale’s legacy\, among them quality of craftsmanship\, respect for materials\, and artistic innovation. \nStrear creates sculpted wooden vessels that serve as canvasses for his meticulously hand-carved\, rhythmic patterns\, many of which are inspired by ancient structures and artifacts. After graduating in 2006\, he was awarded the Robyn and John Horn Woodturning Fellowship at the Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts. In 2007 Ben moved to New York City where he found success both fabricating and managing the production of projects for high profile architects and artists. It was also during this time that Ben defined a formal language for his own sculptural woodwork. In 2016 Ben began to focus on creating sculptures full time. Ben and his family currently reside in Grand Rapids\, Michigan. \nARTIST’S STATEMENT\nMy process and materials are simple: I sculpt and carve wood. While wood by itself is very beautiful\, it’s transformative qualities are what I enjoy the most. I utilize both shallow relief and chip carving to achieve the woven\, repetitive patterns that adorn my work. I rely on monochromatic color schemes to highlight the patterning\, rather than the color of the material itself. On some of my work\, I further graphic depth by incising or burning a secondary pattern over a sculpture’s topographic surface. \nWhile the foundation for my art is largely technically driven\, I tend to look towards antiquities and fossils for added inspiration. I search for objects that possess finite detail expertly transposed over beautiful forms\, either through natural means or by human hands. When pattern and form are combined in the right way\, I end up with sculptures that have an air of mystery and impossibility. During his time at Winterthur\, Trent served as a visiting fellow at the Center for Art in Wood\, where he and a classmate worked with the director to begin reinstalling the permanent collection. Prior to graduate school\, he worked at the Minnesota Historical Society as a Research Assistant for an exhibition on suburbia. Trent has held internships at the American Craft Council and the Goldstein Museum of Design. DESCRIPTION:LIVE Marquetry Demo | Tara Bellofatto | Fri. Dec. 6\, 2019 |  The Center for Art in Wood\n  \nJoin us for First Friday for a live marquetry demo with Tara Bellofatto. Meet the artist and watch her manipulate delicate\, paper-thin pieces of veneer to create dynamic images in wood. During the evening\, you will also have the opportunity to sign up for the two-day Marquetry Madness Class hosted by the Center for Art in Wood and taking place at the University of the Arts on Sat\, Jan 11\, and Sun\, Jan 12\, 2020. \nThis class is appropriate for all skill levels. No prior woodworking experience required. \nFor more information and for registration click HERE. \nTara Bellofatto\nPhiladelphia/Southern New Jersey-based woodworker\, Tara Bellofatto\, has been honing her skills as a furniture maker and marquetarian since graduating from the University of the Arts in 2010. Tara has exhibited at the Cosmopolitan Club\, Philadelphia’s City Hall\, Attleboro Arts Museum. She has participated in alumni exhibitions at the Philadelphia Museum of Art Craft Show and the Philadelphia Furniture Show. \nGrowing up with an appreciation for what has come before\, Tara pays homage to the pop culture of the past\, being heavily influenced by striking images found within movements and periods such as Art Deco\, pre-code Hollywood\, and Germany’s Weimar era. She blends her passion for woodworking and her enthusiasm for vintage film\, music\, literary\, and (especially) horror icons. Entirely cut by hand\, her marquetry presents rewarding challenges\, allowing her to connect to and become completely immersed in her creations. \nTara Bellofatto maintains her practice out of her home studio in New Jersey and currently works at the University of the Arts as a Lecturer and Wood Shop Technician.

She began competing in the Philly Youth Poetry Movement’s slam league when she was in ninth grade. Since then\, she has performed at many open mics and slams in Philadelphia\, San Francisco\, Washington\, d.c. and New York. She earned a spot on Philadelphia’s Brave New Voices team in 2017. In 2018 Kadidja was awarded Artwell’s Student Leader award. Currently\, she is a sophomore in college studying education at the secondary level. Kadidja wholeheartedly believes in poetry’s ability to confront social issues\, spread awareness\, and tell stories of marginalized people. \n  \n  \nReese Florence Coran \nPhiladelphia based singer-songwriter Reese Florence is a hand percussionist\, ukulele\, and guitar player. A purely haunting\, bluesy\, and soulful sound; effortlessly expressing inner wisdom through the preparation of her freshman album\, to be released in Autumn 2020.

DESCRIPTION:Production still from Making Home Movies.\nPostponed – Making Home Movies | a Mural Arts Philadelphia Porch Light program | Fri\, March 20\, 2020 | 6:30 – 8:30 pm | at The Center for Art in Wood\nPlease check back for the new date. \nSix films\, six distinct communities\, countless Philadelphia stories. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition Humaira Abid: Searching for Home\, Mural Arts Philadelphia’s Porch Light program presents Making Home Movies\, a collaborative film project created with newly-arrived immigrant and refugee communities in Philadelphia. Making Home Movies partners adult and youth English language learners with filmmakers and poets to explore the language and imagery of home and to create community together. \nDoors open at 6:30 pm and viewing begins at 7:00 pm. Wine and light fare will be available. \nThis project has been funded by the City of Philadelphia Department of Behavioral Health and Intellectual disAbility Services (DBHIdS). The Porch Light program is a collaboration between Mural Arts Philadelphia and DBHIdS. Partners include the African Cultural Alliance of North America Inc\, The Exchange at Oxford Circle\, Horace Howard Furness High School\, PhillyCAM\, Northeast High School\, and Southeast by Southeast. \n
