The 2016 FS conference will frame this moment in Philadelphia’s rich environment as a unique and vital site of past and future crafts activity. \nProgramming at conference aims to offer multiple perspectives. In recent years the programming has blended artist presentations with panel discussions on contemporary topics relevant to the studio furniture community and the conference theme.  Presentations range greatly from technique driven topics to highlighting individual practices\, such as historical or contemporary makers important to the studio furniture field and emerging makers presenting their talented approaches to studio design/build practices. \nIn conjunction with the Furniture Society: \nWorkshop: Seven at the Center: the 2016 Windgate ITE Fellows Collaboration Laboratory\, Thursday\, June 23\, 10:15AM-5:00PMFellows: Amy Forsyth\, Ashley Eriksmoen\, Betty Scarpino\, Katie Hudnall\, Merryll Saylan\, Michaela Crie Stone\, Nucharin Wangphongsawasd; at UArts\, Room J-COS1. The seven Windgate ITE Fellows awarded residencies by The Center for Art in Wood each have a variety of skills and techniques that they employ in their work. SUMMARY:#GIVINGTUESDAY
DESCRIPTION:This #GivingTuesday\, help foster the future of artists who work in wood by supporting The Center for Art in Wood’s Student Artist Fellow for the 2017 Windgate ITE International Residency Program. Our goal is to raise $5\,000 to fund this very special student experience. \nThis past summer marked the 21st year for the Windgate ITE International Residency and the 30th year for the Center as a nonprofit. In recognition of these two milestones we established the position for a student to participate as a Windgate ITE Resident Fellow\, working side by side with five mid-career/emerging artists\, a scholar and a photojournalist. \nShow your support by donating now and join in the movement by posting on the Center’s page an #unselfie sharing what inspires you! \nHear how our first student artist\, Rebecca Kolodziejczak\, felt about her experience as a Fellow during our 2016 Windgate ITE International Residency by clicking here.* \n*excerpted from John Thornton’s full video of the allTURNatives: FORM + SPIRIT 2016 exhibition.

SUMMARY:Love Stories: Adapted and Performed by Denise McCormack
DESCRIPTION:Love Stories | Master Storyteller Denise McCormack | Sept 13\, 2018 | 7 – 8 pm | At The Center for Art in Wood | Fringe Festival\nMaster storyteller Denise McCormack brings to life literary and traditional tales to capture the essence of women’s issues and issues of the heart. This one-woman stand-up sparks a flood of emotions and memories\, as it revisits secret and soulful nuances of motherhood\, childhood\, family\, and life—the dynamics of love. Intended for adults. \nPay What You Wish / 60 minutes\nFor tickets click HERE. \nJoin Master Storyteller Denise McCormack for her one-woman show Love Stories\, carefully crafted tales that explore the human condition through the power of story. Each vignette highlights the dynamic nature of relationships and reflects the emotional turmoil that is interwoven in the choices and circumstances of our being\, especially those related to women’s issues\, of motherhood and family. These are not romantic stories; they are stories of our deepest natures and souls. They are stories that connect us and allow us to see into one anothers’ lives for understanding and empathy\, for validation.” McCormack’s soulful performance of Love Stories premiered during Philly Theatre Week to rave reviews and has since been featured at various local and national venues. According to Katie Sorenson\, development and events manager at The Center for Art in Wood\, Denise McCormack approaches each story in detail\, breathing life into them in such a way that captivates the audience. It is a wonderfully unique experience\, and we highly recommend attending one of Denise McCormack’s performances. While here at the Center we invite guests to explore the exhibition\, Museum Collection and shop for unique items in our Museum Store. \nReaders: Norman Cain\, Sarah Grey\, Briyanna Hymms\, Lauren Lowe \nDebates\, Defenses\, and Dreams by Norman Cain\nNorman Cain was born in 1942 and raised on Olive Street in West Philadelphia. He graduated in 1964 from Bluefield State College in West Virginia where he majored in social science and minored in English. A retired social worker\, teacher\, father of five and grandfather of seven\, he is active in several writing groups\, including the Best Day of My Life So Far at the Philadelphia Senior Center. His work can be read in several volumes of the Drexel Writers Room’s Anthology series\, Milestones\, The Best Day of My Life So Far\, and in numerous online and local publications. \nSalvaging the Dormant: On Language by Sarah Grey\nSarah Grey is a freelance writer based in Philadelphia. Her work on topics including politics\, language\, food\, and labor has appeared in Best Food Writing 2015\, Jacobin\, Bitch\, Saveur\, International Socialist Review\, Monthly Review\, Lucky Peach\, and more. She edits and indexes academic\, activist\, and creative nonfiction (with a specialty in Marxism) for publishers and individuals under the name Grey Editing (greyediting.com) and was awarded the American Copy Editors Society’s 2016 Robinson Prize for Excellence in Copy Editing. \nTime Stamps by Briyanna Hymms\nBriyanna Hymms majored in biology (BS ’18) and minored in writing at Drexel University. She is an active member of Drexel’s Writers Room\, where you can find pieces of her poetry\, creative nonfiction writing\, and art. Her story is woven with strands of inspiration from friends and family\, helping to form the tapestry of her life. \nSome Old Houses by Lauren Lowe\nLauren Lowe is a Drexel alum (BA English\, ’17). During the 2017-2018 academic year\, she served as an Artist Year fellow and taught creative writing at Paul Robeson High School in West Philadelphia. She is a regular member of Drexel Writers Room and a fervent Sixers fan—both have taught her how to trust the process. \nThe Head & The Hand is a nonprofit\, independent craft publishing company and writers’ workshop based in Philadelphia.\nWe call it “craft” because we consider writers to be artisans\, much like a carpenter or a farmer. And just as a farmer is connected to the crop from the seed to the harvest\, we think that a writer should be connected to the process of crafting a book\, from manuscript submission to the shelf. \nWith business practices influenced by the work ethic of artisans\, we strive to work with authors\, both aspiring and established\, whose work is not confined to a specific style or mindset. Our main goal is to produce writing that shows a connection from the head to the hand by publishing stories that have the power to change and entertain. \nAnd with our Writers’ Workshop\, we are also doing everything we can to help maintain the long legacy of book publishing in Philadelphia\, while also making our own unique contribution to the city’s burgeoning literary community. \nFor more information about The Head and the Hand click HERE. \nFor questions please contact Katie Sorenson\, Community Engagement Manager at katie@museumforartinwood.org. \n  \n  \n

SUMMARY:Young Artist Speaker Series
DESCRIPTION:Young Artist Speaker Series | Artist Colin Pezzano | Wed\, March 6\, 2019 | 6 – 8 pm | The Center for Art in Wood\nThe Center for Art in Wood is proud to present the Young Artist Speaker Series. Each semester a young artist is asked to share their work and speak about the transition from academia to an independent artist. The first in the series will feature artist Colin Pezzano taking place on Wednesday\, March 6\, 2019\, from 6 – 8 pm. \nColin Pezzano is a woodworker based out of Philadelphia\, PA.  Pezzano projects his unique sensibility onto the possibilities of furniture and uses this to offset the domestic environment with pathos and humor. His work is an honest self-searching\, channeling childhood experience and memory to bring beauty to the mundane\, shaping into an object the awkward fumbling form of youth and naivety. The result is something truly unique\, and surprisingly moving; considering the stark\, often minimal approach he takes in design. In these pieces\, in his take on everyday objects\, Pezzano strives to convey a long-lost sense of awe and wonder\,  a chance for a moment to regain a bit of our inner child\, our absent innocence.   He pushes himself in self-discovery\, and in that finds a piece of himself; a piece of all of us. \nColin graduated from University of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received the Windgate Fellowship.  After Graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and was interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first Solo show “Contain You”  at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. Since then\, Pezzano has appeared in several shows and galleries including The Smithsonian Craft Show (2016). Following the Smithsonian Craft show\, Colin was inspired to develop a small production line of furniture and objects\, collaborating with other craft artists. In 2018\, Colin had his second Solo show “Still Life with Dead Game”. Pezzano maintains his practice in Philadelphia out of his basement studio and currently is working at the University of Pennsylvania. \nThis event is free to the public. The Center for Art in Wood is a nonprofit arts organization. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nFor question please contact Community Engagement Manager Katie Sorenson at katie@museumforartinwood.org.
