SUMMARY:A Special Musical Performance by TR7 and Jamaaladeen Tacuma
DESCRIPTION:A Special Musical Performance by TR7 and Jamaaladeen Tacuma | Thurs. Jan 15\, 2026 | 6:30 – 8:00 pm ET | In-person\nRSVP \nJoin us for a special musical performance celebrating the current exhibition\, A Usable Past: Reflections of a Nation and Its Inheritance\, featuring artists Taji Ra’oof Nahl (TR7) and Jamaaladeen Tacuma. The performance will echo themes of cultural identities inherited through family or migration\, the building of new legacies within a heterogeneous society\, the fragility of democratic ideals\, and the failures of systems that promise unity\, liberty\, and self-governance. \nAbout the Artists \n  \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Taji Ra’oof Nahl (TR7) is a Philadelphia-based conceptual artist whose practice merges sculpture\, sound\, performance\, and experimental cinema into a site-responsive method he calls Field Trips to Staged Productions. A 2024 Guggenheim Fellow in Fine Arts\, his work explores civic infrastructures\, ecological intelligence\, Islamic cosmology\, and African American intellectual lineage. His ongoing Abstract Dynamics series—often realized as duo projects—extends this approach through live scoring\, moving-image presentation\, and spatial activation. TR7 is the founder of Ra’oof Atelier\, Channel TR7\, Adam Vocabulary Club\, and The Other Sounds of Philadelphia. \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Few musicians leave their audiences with a feeling that they have truly witnessed something amazing. Artist/Producer/Performer/Arranger/Innovator AND Bassist—JAMAALADEEN TACUMA does just that. This native Philadelphian has always stretched the old mold of what a bassist is supposed to play and how. Tacuma has redefined his instrument’s artistic potential. In the mid 70’s\, his creatively free approach to the bass caught the eye and ear of the legendary saxophonist Ornette Coleman. Tacuma became a member of Coleman’s electric band\, Prime Time\, he toured with the group and played on some of Coleman’s historic recordings such as: “Dancing In Your Head”\, “Body Meta”\, and “Of Human Feelings”. As a soloist\, Tacuma continued to push the musical envelope with his debut album\, simply titled “Showstopper\,” in 1983. Several records followed\, some of which include: Renaissance Man (1984)\, Music World (1987) and JukeBox (1989)\, Cosmetic\, Boss of The Bass\, which confirmed his ability to flip between various musical genres. Even the critics have had high praise for Tacuma’s musicianship and artistry. One year he received the highest number of votes ever for an electric bassist in the “Talent Deserving Wider Recognition” category of the DownBeat critics’ poll. \n\nIn recent years\, Jamaaladeen has been gaining recognition from some of the United States most prestigious artist foundations. In 2011\, Jamaaladeen received the Pew Arts & Heritage Award\, the Marcus Garvey Foundation Award\, and the Uptown Theater Hall of Fame Award in 2014. Jamaaladeen has received composer’s residencies at the prestigious MacDowell Colony\, Headlands Center for the Arts\, and Civitella Rainier Italy\, where he composed a new project he will be presenting in 2015. He was honored in 2018 with Philadelphia’s Benny Golson Award and Liberty Bell Medal\, in 2020  Jazz Journalist Association “Philadelphia Jazz Hero Award”\, 2021 South Arts Creative Residency Grant\, and Mid Atlantic Arts International award. In 2023\, he was honored by Morocco with the Visa Music Award. Staying true to his artistic and experimental approach to music\, Tacuma consistently brings fans worldwide musical peace and happiness. \n\n \n \n \n \n \n This event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions? His music has spanned genres\, from jazz to punk rock to free improvisation and he has performed in both concert halls and basements.  He apprenticed as a luthier and has worked in stringed instrument repair and woodworking for over a decade. Combining his background in composition and fabrication\, Sam makes and repairs the equipment used while performing. He is currently playing in the band DeStructos as well as hosting a local film screening series Cinema Diabolique. \n\n\nColin Pezzano\nColin Pezzano\, born in 1992\, is a woodworker\, printmaker\, and craft artist based in South Philadelphia. His practice combines digital and hand processes to infuse humor\, pathos\, and memory into his chosen materials. By relying on woodworking processes\, he connects his actions and memories to the traditions of his predecessors. \nColin graduated from the University Of The Arts in 2014. Upon graduation\, he received The Faculty Choice Award and The Windgate Fellowship.  After graduation\, Pezzano was featured in Craft Forms (2014) and interviewed in an article with American Craft. In the Spring of 2015\, Pezzano had his first solo show\, “Contain You\,” at Bridgette Mayer Gallery. In 2018\, Colin had his second solo show\, “Still Life With Dead Game\,” at Allens Lane Art Center. In 2022\, he received The Windgate-Lamar Fellowship Award through The Center for Craft. \nIn conjunction with the exhibition “Home as Stage” at the Wharton Esherick Museum in the fall of 2022\, Colin released a graphic novel titled Soma\, told in 45 woodcuts. A “mundane horror\,” the narrative investigates lived and imagined experience\, corporality\, and the passage of time. \nDuring his career Pezzano has participated in group shows\, juried exhibitions and attended residencies in the USA and Sweden. He maintains his practice in his basement studio. \nThis event is free to the public. He achieved fame as a leader of the modern American Arts and Crafts movement. George earned a master’s degree in architecture from M.I.T in 1931. In 1934\, Nakashima joined the architecture firm of Antonin Raymond\, a protégé of architect Frank Lloyd Wright. However\, after spending a year in a WWII Japanese American internment camp in 1942\, along with his wife and daughter\, Mira\, Nakashima decided to pursue a new career as a furniture designer\, where he championed traditional philosophies and craftsmanship. Nakashima is recognized as one of America’s most eminent furniture designer-craftsman and his style of “organic naturalism” can be seen in the buildings\, landscape\, and furniture located in the Nakashima Woodworkers Complex in New Hope\, PA\, which has been recognized as a National Landmark and a World Monument. Private tours of the Nakashima studio are offered through the Nakashima Foundation for Peace and George Nakashima’s work can be viewed at the Metropolitan Museum\, Mingei International Museum and Michener Art Museum.  \n \n \n \n \n \n About George Nakashima Woodworkers\nFounded in 1945 by the late Japanese American George Nakashima\, Nakashima Woodworkers focuses on material and craftmanship by creating timeless furniture pieces from sustainably harvested hardwoods\, particularly American black walnut\, made to be aesthetically pleasing and utilitarian at the same time. The studio works only with solid wood and with an immense respect for the material. George believed that natural materials\, such as wood\, should be “studied\, understood and respected”. They custom-mill sustainably harvested hardwoods and select the resulting planks individually for each project.  \n \n \n \n \n \n Portrait of Mira Nakashima \n \n \n \n \n \n Questions?
