SUMMARY:Music Performance with Velvet Penny\, World Assembly Body Opera and Keepsake1Million
DESCRIPTION:Music Performance with Velvet Penny\, World Assembly Body Opera and Keepsake | Tues. Oct. 27\, 2026 | Doors open 6:30 pm\nFor Tickets\, Click HERE \nJoin us for a special music performance by Velevet Penny\, World Assembly Body Opera and Keepsake. Tickets are on a sliding scale; please choose the level you can support the artists. \n\nKeepsake Bio:\n\nKeepsake 1 Million is the musical project of renowned con artist Willem Cousineau. In October of 2025 he released his debut album Every Night I Get Vertigo\, a cathartic introduction to his songwriting. Since then he has played his songs with a revolving band of outstanding musicians and the sound has grown more eccentric and rambunctious.\n\nCollaborators include Mason McAvoy\, Clark Berman\, Bay Fletcher\, Aviva Bock\, Chris Dahlke\, Luther Case\, Brannon Rovins\, Thomas McCloskey\, Jude Walters\, Will Tober\, Chris Kelly Dutile\, Paul Giess\, Jacy Farrow\, and Ryan Donlin.\n\n\n\n\nVelvet Penny Bio:\nVelvet Penny is an art rock group based out of Los Angeles\, spearheaded and fronted by Marlena. The project was first conceived as a solo endeavor\, but upon the release of Marlena’s record\, ‘All the Flowers’ a band formed at the end of 2022 and over the past four years\, has become what it is now\, a power trio sharing music that borrows from folk\, jazz\, and rock to create tapestries of dynamic performances that hold room for dichotomy; raw and refined\, strong and vulnerable. On October 2nd the group is set to release their new 12″ vinyl record\, ‘Carousel Dreams’ \, a shadowy body of work coming out on Psylk Rd. Records. To support the release\, the band is touring this fall from the South through the Midwest and over to the East Coast.\n\n\n\n\nWorld Assembly Body Opera Bio:\nWorld Assembly Body Opera is the theatrically dynamic sonic sketch of a lost moment directed by Mason McAvoy. She is accompanied by Ricki Wiedenhoff\, Koof Ibi\, Timothy Hagen\, Asia Mieleszko\, and Julia Finegan.

SUMMARY:Opening for Donna Dodson: Match of the Martriarchs
DESCRIPTION:Frist Friday Opening for Donna Dodson: Match of the Martriarchs | Nov. 6\, 2026 | 5 - 8 pm \n \n \n \n \n \n Walk-ups Welcome \nJoin us for the opening of Match of the Matriarchs. \n\n\nMatch of the Matriarchs centers on a monumental\, interactive chessboard featuring 32 life-size\, movable chess pieces hand-carved from salvaged wood. Modeled on female archetypes and marine beings—cephalopods\, cetaceans\, and mermaids—Dodson’s sculptures transform the traditionally hierarchical game into a speculative arena of matriarchal power and ecological symbolism. Long coded as a test of masculine intellect and mastery\, chess in this match becomes a site of reversal: the queen’s latent authority resurfaces\, and new strategies come into view. Working with reclaimed wood—its ranging tones and scars visible to all—Dodson aligns chess with material memory\, presenting the game as a dynamic system of multi-generational wisdom\, stratagem\, and transformation over domination. \nComplementing Dodson’s installation are wood chess sets made by other artists alongside video works by Philadelphia-based chess champion and historian Jen Shahade\, whose wry\, incisive lens reclaims visibility for women in chess culture. Previously exhibited at the World Chess Hall of Fame\, St. Louis\, MO\, and the Boston Sculptors Gallery\, the project evolves at the Museum for Art in Wood through expanded programming and performance. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n\nDonna Dodson is an American sculptor internationally recognized for her monumental figurative works carved from wood. Working primarily with salvaged and reclaimed timber\, she transforms the material’s grain\, scale\, and physical presence into expressive female archetypes\, mythic beings\, and hybrid forms that challenge traditional hierarchies of power. A 2022 Fulbright U.S. Scholar at Q21/MuseumsQuartier Vienna\, Dodson has completed residencies in Switzerland\, Peru\, Taiwan\, and Denmark. She is currently a Scholar at the Brandeis University Women’s Studies Research Center and a Visual Art Fellow at the St. Botolph Club in Boston. \nHer work is held in the permanent collections of the World Chess Hall of Fame\, the Fuller Craft Museum\, the Provincetown Art Museum\, the Art Complex Museum\, the Noyes Art Museum\, and the Davistown Museum\, and her work has been reviewed in The Boston Globe\, Sculpture Magazine\, Hyperallergic\, Artnet\, and The Daily Beast. Dodson is represented by Abigail Ogilvy Gallery in Los Angeles and is a graduate of Wellesley College. \n\n\n\n\nPhotos: Brian Wilson

She went on to win two US Chess Women’s Championship titles and a Silver Olympic medal. \nJennifer’s joint passion for games and art led to dozens of creative projects through her career\, including authoring Chess Queens and Thinking Sideways: How To Think Like a Chessplayer and Win at Life.   She’s a board member at the World Chess Hall of Fame and the host of two award-winning podcasts\, the GRID and Ladies Knight.  The GRID is a game within a game\, as Jen fills out the entire 169 grid of possible poker hands.   \nShahade is a fierce advocate for inclusivity. She is the co-founder of 9 Queens and an advisory board member of the Women in Chess Foundation.  In 2023\, she became a whistleblower of #MeToo in chess. According to the Telegraph\, “Thanks to the actions of female stars like Jennifer Shahade\, a dark side to the male-dominated-mind sport can no longer be hidden.” \nJennifer is the MindSports Ambassador at PokerStars and a two-time Global Poker Award winner.  Her titles include a PA Spring Championship of online poker and a Championship belt at the Open Face High Roller Championship in Prague.  In 2024\, she was nominated for the Women in Poker Hall of Fame. \nThis event is free to the public. The Museum for Art in Wood interprets\, nurtures\, and champions creative engagement and expansion of art\, craft\, and design in wood to enhance the public’s understanding and appreciation of it. A suggested donation of $5 per person enables us to provide programs and exhibitions throughout the year. \nDONATE \nQuestions?
